Hi forum, long time lurker first time poster :-[
Anyway, I really am confused as to the differences between (CAS) Methods and just Methods.
Are they scaled any differently?
I know that CAS uses a calculator.. But besides that, whats the point of having separate maths?
Can you fellow VN members give me the 'down low' on the subject.
You can probably tell I'm in Year 10 >.>
Thanks,
Hacik ;)

Hi, I think there is no more non-CAS methods anymore, it's only CAS now.
There are differences in the topics learnt, like CAS you do a bit of matrices but in non-CAS you don't.
-
I see, I've always wondered on what the difference was. I can trust your answer too. Very, very nice ATAR/enter, TrueTears.
By the way.. Weird question
For maths, what type of material did you use.
i.e Folder/loose leaf, book...
Thanks,
Hacik

CAS is a vkalulata u n00b

Thanks, I used Essentials as my textbook, used 128pg lined workbooks to do exercises, used pencil to do exercises and used a TI-89 calculator.

We had some guy that got 99.95 for his enter to come and have a talk/lecture with our school.
He said that loose leaf paper was the best as you could move them around etc.
What do you think the best type of method is to study, I know this is a little off topic but still =D You seem to know your stuff.
-
use anything as long as u can do maths on it.
best method to study is self study (for me).
-
Oh wow, so they're ditching non-CAS methods..
Why is that?
And "self study"~ please elaborate..
-
I see. Well, good luck with everything.
Thanks for the post guys.

CAS = Computer algebra system; using a CAS calculator during exam 2. Obviously, the more powerful the calculator, the harder the exam will be.
Non cas has been phased out. The entire spec course is now run on cas too.
Just become familiar with your CAS. It basically does all the work for you - but don't become too reliant. Personally I just used a scientific calc last year for methods, so that I would be forced to understand the theory, rather than using the 'solve' option on the CAS.
-
Okay, thank you. I'm going to be getting a CAS calculator this semester.. Whopping $200. I miss my old $30 one xD

IMO, CAS is harder and it scales slightly higher. But there isn't much difference. CAS Part II (tech-active) has a different paper to it as well.
This is the last year for MM non-CAS to be one of the VCE subjects.
Correction, last year was the last non-CAS year for Methods. This year there is only CAS.
As for why they changed, supposedly it was to make Methods more accessible to the general populace. :p
-
Ha~ I understand now =D.
Thank you =D.

yeh so like self study, just read alot of maths books and watch alot of lecture videos, i remember back in year 12 i was watching khan academy videos and also reading some great books like stewarts, art n craft etc
-
How much of the stuff is not on the exam... If that makes sense.
I heard that the people in the 90+ ATAR's said that there was a lot of stuff that wasn't really covered by their text book..Thanks to their extra reading it helped..
Is this true?
-
na most of it was on essentials dono about others, further reading beyond yr 12 material has several advantages, it increases your passion for mathematics which really helps with your confidence and trust me confidence is super important in mathematics. it also explores the fundamentals much deeper than the material taught in 3/4 methods, eg, calculus is one area where 3/4 methods completely skips the basics (Riemann sums, integral approximations etc) and most people do not have a real understanding of it, they can apply it but most will not appreciate its beauty.
-
You speak of maths as if its a girl or someone ;)
Also, how did you go for maths..
Im assuming a 50 for both methods and spec?
-
nah no 50, lol maths is like an art, very 'beautiful', and very aesthetic in nature, it also amazes me because mathematics forms the foundations for alot of other sciences, phys, chem, economics etc.
vce mathematics is different though, it's more like practising to not make stupid mistakes rather than learning true mathematics, also all the constraints in vce maths is very annoying which is another reason for further reading if vce maths bores u.

Maths is definately the foundation for all of those sciences... Especially Physics. How did you prepare for year 12?
