Title: The Japanese Language Speech Contest Victoria

(scroll down to 41st Annual Japanese Language Speech Contest Victorian State Final 2010)

Any of you guys entering the contest this year (or have entered before)? I think I might give this a go!

My japanese teacher said the last year's winning speech topic was "The comparison of Japanese and American superheroes" and the speaker compared Superman and AnPanMan and discussed how most American heroes prefer to fight alone whilst AnPanMan and what-not always seem to have a supporting team behind him/them etc

Most of the topics need to convey some sort of "message" and the time limit is quite short - being 2.5~3 mins
I have brainstormed a few topics so far....

-Japanese Onomatopoeia - saw a winning speech on youtube that was funny and inspiring
-Japanese Bakemono/Oni - might be an interesting topic because of its influence in manga, but I cant think of a good "message" out of it
-Comparison of Japanese and Western Calligraphy - could discuss how Western calligraphy is non-existent nowadays compared to it being taken up in Japanese schools as a part of their curriculum

Any suggestions/ideas?

Well Nikki if I were to participate, I would talk about escapism in Japan, with links to Host Clubs, Maid cafe's, Cabarets and the like.
By the way I strongly suggest you apply for the JENESYS programme - http://www.afs.org.au/aus_en/view/10592
I did it during its first year and it was the best time of my life.

oh, I went to Japan (Hiroshima, Tokyo and Oogaki countryside) for school last year for 2 weeks and I lived with 3 different home stays. Very fun timez.

Anyway, I chose to do the Onomatopoeia topic since I can share some personal experience - such as when I went to Purikura with my home stay sister and she kept saying "pikapika" to describe the photo but I didn't understand as I was thinking she was trying to imitate Pikachu... until I figured it out =="

but I've already been there before and I already started planning my speech :S
plus the closing date is really soon so I doubt I can hassle my mum about it (she'd probably want me at home to get ready for yr 12 than "holidaying" in Japan in the summer holidays)

I'll talk to my mum about it tonight to see if I can do it but im just wondering if that would clash with the MUEP Japanese placement test date (not sure if its in Dec or Jan) :S

PS. pfft she said no and then ranted about "what about your safety? you've been there before! it seems fishy"  :idiot2:

Tell your mum to watch welcome to the NHK, she would relate a lot.

I did a speech in this comp last year as a year 11. haha it was great, it really helps! I got to see amazing speakers, and the environment of the hall was fun :) As an easy topic I did comparison of Australian to Japanese education. These programs are really good to supliment your VCE experience. I'm entering this year as well so I guess ill see you :P
