Title: University of Melbourne 2010 semester 1 results thread.
Post by: QuantumJG on June 30, 2010, 09:15:15 pm
Well since VNers are already getting their results (atm I'm not one of them) I thought that I would make a thread for people to put their results and discuss them.

Anyway I hope everybody does well.

Some people can access one of their results through the new study plan.  I think it's a little glitch.

Just altertin' because you may not have checked.
It gets put on the study plan, but a day later it's put in the 'view my results' system.
So I don't think it is a glitch - I think one updates daily and one updates automatically.

It's quite a challenging subject; very much driven by your own independent research and involves trawling through alot of primary sources which may/may not end up being fruitful for your assessment pieces.
It covers a very broad timeframe which often made the subject even more challenging- it analyses the beliefs and notions of Witchcraft from the middle ages right through to the end of the 17th century. We extensively explored areas of continental Europe, England, France and Ireland as a means to analyse the disparity between beliefs about Witchcraft in different geographical areas. It was very much driven by the themes of maleficium and diabolism which defined Witchcraft and how these concepts changed over time and how different geographical areas emphasised different components which defined the Witch. We analysed a variety of Witch trials too- there was a significant emphasis on the Salem Witch trials of 1692.
We also analysed popular depictions of the Witch presented in visual representations and the differences between visual sources in continental Europe, England, France and Spain. It was also really interesting to delve into many of the social and religious factors which were instrumental in exacerbating beliefs about Witchcraft and the factors which saw numbers of Witchcraft trials decline by the end of the 17th century.

I found the topics on possession and exorcism in early Modern France and England the most fascinating and how religious beliefs were heavily intertwined and a factor which heavily influenced the relationship between Witchcraft and possession.

Overall it was a fairly decent subject- quite challenging though and a ridiculous amount of reading. I hope this answers your question :)

I just got all my Results:

MAST20026 - Real Analysis with Applications , Option , Credits: 12.5 , Passed , 2010 , Semester 1 , Parkville , On Campus Mark: 67 Grade: Third Class Honours (H3)

PHYC20009 - Thermal and Classical Physics , Option , Credits: 12.5 , Passed , 2010 , Semester 1 , Parkville , On Campus Mark: 67 Grade: Third Class Honours (H3)

PHYC20010 - Quantum Mechanics and Special Relativity , Option , Credits: 12.5 , Passed , 2010 , Semester 1 , Parkville , On Campus Mark: 78 Grade: Second Class Hons A (H2A)

FNCE20003 - Introductory Personal Finance , Option , Credits: 12.5 , Passed , 2010 , Semester 1 , Parkville , On Campus Mark: 58 Grade: Pass (P)

Now let's compare that to what I was expecting:

Great, so I can have a heart attack every day until the 9th of July.

This is pretty much how I feel and the results come out in less than two weeks.

What I hope to see:

- Quantum Mechanics and Special Relativity H1. I really loved this subject.
- Thermal and Classical Physics P (Really difficult exam).
- Real Analysis with Applications H2(A or B). The exam was easier than expected so I'm expecting atleast a Pass.
- Introductory Personal Finance P (Really difficult exam + Minimal Study = :S).

Well I was a tiny bit below my expectations for Quantum Mechanics and Special Relativity, I was above my expectations for thermal physics, I'm content with how I went with Real Analysis and I am so happy I actually passed personal Finance (since I really neglected this subject).

Overall I'm happy.

It's easy but mind-numbingly boring. So many people get crap marks because there is no motivation to study it.

100 is always impressive though, congrats

Went and checked the study plan - it wasn't there this morning :S

ACCT10001 - Accounting Reports and Analysis , Core , Credits: 12.5 , Passed , 2010 , Semester 1 , Parkville , On Campus Mark: 84 Grade: First Class Honours (H1)

MAST10005 - Calculus 1 , Option , Credits: 12.5 , Passed , 2010 , Semester 1 , Parkville , On Campus Mark: 100 Grade: First Class Honours (H1)

I'm pretty happy because I did barely no work for Accounting during the semester - but I was expecting a little bit higher for Accounting I guess, didn't expect a loss of 20 marks for the exam. Calculus - I was over the moon, but was confused because I certainly didn't expect it! :D

Who is the subject coordinator? They've obviously changed the exam format considerably. We wrote two extended essay questions in 2009. Filled about one script book for each.

I know I wrote 4 pages per Q. instead because I asked and he was like "Oh yeah that's fine the limit is just because the University requires one".  Yep.  And also, he told everyone that like, 70 words was considerably enough was probably all they would get time to write.  I was like "Um I write like 50 000 words a minute what happens to me!?".  It takes me much more time to try and stay under word limits than it does to go over it.  It takes me like 2 hours to write an essay and then 48 to cut 1000 words out of it just so it will fit under the stupid leeway.

The exam format was changed!  It turned into a short answer exam, so like, 10 questions were there but only 8 had to be answered.
Each was worth 5 marks and you merely had to make 5 points to get 5 marks, you didn't have to argue anything.
Each was written in a different script book to be marked by a different tutor who was allocated the same Q.  So one tutor marked all script books which answered Q1 etc.  I thought that was a good way to do it, not like the essays where the bitch I had gave nobody a H1 and failed to understand the concept of a bell curve.  As well as taking marks off for absolutely no reason when questioned.

Anyway yep, it was piss easy.  The Qs were like 'What is the difference between Presidential and Parliamentary systems?  If Australia had become a republic, which would it have become?  Which system is Australia now?'.  That was literally Q1.
There was another that was just
Q10: 'What is the difference between the Senate and the House of Representatives?' ._.

None of my subjects are done to a bell curve, are you sure that subject was deliberately scaled to fit one? As one of my lecturers kept reminding us, everyone could get H1s if they tried.

Post by: QuantumJG on July 03, 2010, 05:59:48 pm
Nah in uni they don't use bell curves. Mind you that if in a subject the highest mark is say 60% then scaling will be done to ensure a certain portion pass, but conversely if everyone does really well (I.e. 80% get an H1) then no scaling is done.

ALL Arts subjects are generally marked to a bell curve.
Faculties generally stipulate set quotas for the different grade brackets.
E.g. 20-25% receive P, 15-20% receive H3, 10-15% receive H1 etc.

ALL Arts subjects are generally marked to a bell curve.
Faculties generally stipulate set quotas for the different grade brackets.
E.g. 20-25% receive P, 15-20% receive H3, 10-15% receive H1 etc.

Oh wow, you arts people are even stranger than I thought!

Also, if you like easy exams do genetics, health and society. 75% of the exam (the non multi choice bit) was just testing to see if you're a normal person..."if a 19 year old woman had both breasts removed, how would this influence her life" and "discuss why young people are so concerned with visual appearance"

failed to understand the concept of a bell curve

None of my subjects are done to a bell curve, are you sure that subject was deliberately scaled to fit one? As one of my lecturers kept reminding us, everyone could get H1s if they tried.

Aus Pol and Lit are both scaled to the bell curve.

Scott Brenton (y)
He was actually a really good lecturer.

Oh and yeah it was pretty sweet, but one question required you to like, analyse some raw data and say who you think would win the seat based on like, type of voting and direction of preferences but you could skip it.
I did it but I think I would have gotten like 2 marks.

They have been trying to change it and they're not allowed.
It makes sense in some ways - you have difficulty modulating an exam in which there is a definite right or wrong answer, but in essays, you could decide somebody does something better than somebody else because it is just a lot of grey area and no real black and white.
But yes all the tutors hate the bell curve.
I hate the bell curve.

That does not mean that they're allowed to bypass the bell curve when everyone else isn't doing so, it defeats the purpose of marking.

Still waiting on my final subject.

ENGR10004 - Engineering Systems Design 1 , Core , Credits: 12.5 , Passed , 2010 , Semester 1 , Parkville , On Campus Mark: 92 Grade: First Class Honours (H1)

ECON10004 - Introductory Microeconomics , Option , Credits: 12.5 , Passed , 2010 , Semester 1 , Parkville , On Campus Mark: 94 Grade: First Class Honours (H1)

MAST10005 - Calculus 1 , Core , Credits: 12.5 , Passed , 2010 , Semester 1 , Parkville , On Campus Mark: 86 Grade: First Class Honours (H1)

Most suprised with ESD1, assuming it's not "bell curved" I got 100% on the exam!.

no, its actually the opposite, not easy but some of it is very interesting indeed.

This.  Throughout semester everyone in my tutorial group (you work in groups to solve problems) had difficulties, because some of the questions were ridiculously difficult.  But it is incredibly interesting stuff.

MAST10006 - Calculus 2   , Option   , Credits: 12.5   , Passed     , 2010 , Semester 1 , Parkville , On Campus   Mark: 83 Grade: First Class Honours (H1)
MAST10007 - Linear Algebra   , Option   , Credits: 12.5   , Passed     , 2010 , Semester 1 , Parkville , On Campus   Mark: 66 Grade: Third Class Honours (H3)
PHYC10001 - Physics 1: Advanced , Option , Credits: 12.5 , Passed , 2010 , Semester 1 , Parkville , On Campus Mark: 52 Grade: Pass (P)
HEBR10001 - Beginners Hebrew A , Option , Credits: 12.5 , Passed , 2010 , Semester 1 , Parkville , On Campus Mark: 92 Grade: First Class Honours (H1)

Pretty much what I expected for all of it. The question is now whether I continue on with Advanced Physics B so I have the option to do it next year, or do I bail out of it and do Informatics 1 because I didn't much enjoy physics (and it takes up shitloads of time on ma timetable in really crap times)

hmm... I agree.

So you got an H1 for biochem and an H3 for personal finance and I'm guessing your other marks were inbetween. That isn't bad!

I might see if I can do a history and philosophy of science breadth stream.

Question:
Got my lit essay worth 50% back in the mail today.
Given mark was H2A+, let's assume that means 79%
I got a H2A for the mid semester essay worth 30%
And a H1 for the first essay, worth 50%.
My overall score?  86% H1.
Howwww does this happen!?  Even if I had gotten 100% on the first essay, I would still average an 83% at the highest.
Is this something to do with modulation?
Title: Re: University of Melbourne 2010 semester 1 results thread.
Post by: Russ on July 09, 2010, 11:14:18 am
I'm confused, you just listed assessment worth 130%...

Assuming you made a typo somewhere, yes it could be due to modulation. At the end of the day, when you calculate your GPA your percentage doesn't matter. So an 83 is essentially the same as an 86 when it comes to calculating your GPA (they both weight for 7). So I guess the university might not mind some slight alterations there to spread their students out a bit more.

I don't think they modulate as such.
But they do scale up to the nearest whole number when a score is converted.
Say you got a 78 for an essay yet it was only worth 25% of your mark, this equates to a score of 19.5/25. In terms of calculating your final result, this would scale up to 20/25 for that piece of assessment, making it a H1.

Reactor Engineering 95
Heat and Mass Transport Processes 83
Chemical Engineering Management 80
Bioprocess Engineering 79

First time ever that I got a 79 :(
Heat and Mass was insanely hard, so my mark is the result of mega scaling.
Management was a surprise too, given how much I bullshitted on the exam

Overall did better than I expected :)

Listen to this man (woman?). I honestly think somebody who didn't do the subject could get a good mark, a lot of the exam is just common sense.

eg. "Discuss why young people are so concerned with visible differences, with respect to the effects of the media, society and their parents"

I really enjoyed the content of developmental psych, however, the way it was delivered was extremely tedious- particularly the section given by Fiona Reynolds on Language, Culture and Number. I thought Jeanette Lawrence's section on children's rights, responsibilities, procedural/distributive justice was really interesting- I hope to pursue these topics in the third year units next year.
I didn't find the exam too difficult- the multiple choice questions were a tad tricky but the essay questions were reasonably fair I thought. Mary did prepare us quite well for the essay question section, however, the multiple choice questions in the exam were certainly not a reflection of the practice ones at all. I thought it was a disgrace that we weren't allowed any extra script paper if we exceeded the three pages of space given for each question.
However, I ended up with a 91 overall for the subject which I was absolutely stoked with.
