Title: Predict me an eng SS :D
Post by: 98.40_for_sure on July 09, 2010, 02:20:01 pm
lets say...
GA1: high A
GA2: high A
GA3: high B+ to low A

and also if i do worse in the exam than i do in school sacs... im guessing they adjust my GA1 and GA2 accordingly?

I heard that englang was a "scientific take" on english - interesting... but english is for people who enjoy both eng and science, so that might suit me too. As a result, I have no idea which to do.

from your signature, it seems like you've given your future a lot of thought already lol
good on ya, ive only started thinking about my future halfway through year 12 and im stuck with these subjects
so yeah, im a maths/sciencey guy and i HATE english... as do most other people that don't like writing long essays etc
if thats for you then go for english
ive never done EL but yeah if you want to try both out, you're gonna be giving up another subject you could be doing
good luck

I envy younger ones that actually think about their future :(.

I know at the start of year 10 I was all "I am never ever gonna do physics or chem" or "Why do advanced maths, I won't do spesh pffft".

And now I really really regret not doing spesh, and it turns out I love science and maths.

I'm gonna set out on a mission to educate younger students about how important it is to make careful and well-thought decisions about their VCE...As long as they pay me.

I don't know - I'm more a maths/sciency person than english but I'm also pretty good at english and I love it to! This is why it's so hard for me to choose subjects, there's too many I could do. Lol yeah I've got all my tertiary courses sorted out (depending on whether I want to be a solicitor or actuary) but as for VCE, I've almost got subjects sorted out bar the english/EL and I am still unsure whether to do 1 or 2 3/4s next year. I have methods, biology and chinese 1/2 as well as religion and society (but let's not worry about that). I'm definitely doing methods next year... quite standard at my school; but not sure about biology and chinese. Ahh I hate subject selection!!!

I think you and cheryl think too much . Granted, i wanted to try to do heaps of things when I was in year 10, like I dreamt of economics and english language and revolutions and whatever,
but deep down there are subjects you prioritise in your heart and you're gunna pick those over other ones alright. and if u want to do all of them, then dont fret about the workload and accept the consequences.

Yeah, definitely doing a max of 6 subjects + UMEP:

So most likely:
- English Language
- Physics
- Chem
- Chinese SL
- Maths Methods
- Specialist Maths
- UMEP Maths

But I'm not 100% sure... I could go on with biology next year, for instance, and drop one of chem/phys. Lol I suck at subject selection. :P

For me course prerequisites aren't a problem - as I am only seriously considering commerce and law degrees, I only need like maths methods and an english as a prereq; I never wanted to do medicine etc.

if u love em all equally then pick the one with higher scaling- its the only time you should consider scaling. Thus, bio is cancelled out.

Then the above configuration gives the maximal scaling (biology is ~+1, phys is ~+2). Figures are approximate.

- English Language (+2)
- Physics (+2)
- Chem (+3 or 4)
- Chinese SL (+ 9)
- Maths Methods (+4)
- Specialist Maths (+6)
- UMEP Maths

Hmm. Pretty decent scaling :D

Im guessing you're approxing high 40's for all your subjects so that must be why your scaling is so little :P

Title: Re: Predict me an eng SS :D

Well, my school makes us do 5 subjects in year 12 and UMEP is after school so that fits in fine. Of course, they prefer 4 + UMEP but 5 is fine if you can handle it. I might move one of the subjects to year 11 (ie. Chinese) or do biology next year. I'm so bad at VCE subject selection... tertiary course selection is so much easier lol

yea, srsly, move one to year 11, only doing emthods isn;t gonna make ur method score any better

lol, sif tertiary course selection is any easier??? I would argue it's MUCH harder cos you have to take a definite step into what you wanna do, whereas VCE you can do science subjects, history subjects and politics subjects all at the same time without commiting to any particualar line...

having said that you have a *shite* load of time to decide lol

Lol believe it or not, there is actually an advantage to doing 1 in year 11 and 6 in year 12.
Inevitably, I concede that year 12 will be indeed hard. However, doing 1 in year 11 means that you have the time to actually work at your 1/2s which provide a very solid foundation for those subjects in year 12. This means that those subjects in year 12 won't be such a struggle because you're very familiar with the concepts etc. In addition to this, your accelerated subject kind of acts as a trial for your VCE 3/4s - in year 12, you'll be more experienced with time management and more used to all these SACs and stuff...

I also think, as a progressive subject (as all languages can be built upon through years of practice) I would get a better study score doing it in year 12, but preparing most of the materials in year 11 as general convo/detailed study etc... take a long time.

An exception to this is if you're going to compete at one of the international science olympiads in year 12, I would strongly advise to accelerate around 2-3 subjects. I can't imagine how hard it would be to do so much...

I recall half a year ago, I was intending to do three 3/4s next year. I was actually very obstinate to change this, but after consulting around 300 people lol, I was convinced that that was actually a bad idea. So all in all, I'm against acceleration of too many subjects. And yes, there exist people who have gotten perfect VCE scores with 6 subjects in year 12.

Azure: You've always been indecisive over Phys/Bio but why not Chem? :D (I was so annoyed whether to do Bio or Phys because Phys helps more with Spesh (and vice versa) but not with Bio but in the end, I took neither :P)
Maybe you could do Phys and Bio if that solves your problem hahah!
Yeah, that could. I am actually also indecisive about chem. Maybe I'm just indecisive in general. As a principle, I shall pick two subjects out of bio/phys/chem. (Chem has great scaling though! lol and it's a pretty good subject too)
Title: Re: Predict me an eng SS :D
Post by: AzureBlue on July 09, 2010, 11:06:53 pm
Chem is advisable to take because it's often a pre-req subj but I'll just do it because I like it more than Bio/Phys. That's about it.
And all this talk about scaling again. Maybe I'll stop learning music in Year 12 since it's so tough to get high 40's for music and not do VCE Music at all. >< (Though yes I guess it's my interest but if I don't do well, it'll probably be my 6th/7th subject and it's practices are time consuming.) IIRC, < 20 people got >45 for Music last year.)
That's just because not many people take music - the proportions are still the same. Though yes, it does make the subject less 'solid' in terms of study scores, but shouldn't bring about too much of a disadvantage. All this talk about scaling, but bottom line is, do what you like. If you do something just for the scaling, and hate it, then you're going to do bad... If you love it, and it scales, then double bonus :) Which reminds me, I have to start enjoying learning chinese. Wonder how that's going to happen. ;) Though it will help me in my career knowing another language...

Would just like to mention that m@tty is doing 8 subjects by the way :) (check out his cool sig)
VCE Music Performance. Probably because I have no idea what VCE Music Styles is and I know no one that has done it... but then again, that's not a very substantiated reason is it? Just do some research of both and ask some people who have done it and choose the one you think you'll enjoy better and be better at.

I managed to get 296 out of 300 in my UMAT. Section A 100, Section B 98, Section C 98.

I must say that the MedEntry workshop was a great help in preparing for the UMAT. It was really beneficial to familiarise yourself with the types of questions on the UMAT, and work out a method to tackle the questions you find the toughest. The workshop helped in this aspect immensely. The feedback from the practice test done in the workshop is also really useful, as it accurately determines what you need to work on.

The practice exams were an excellent indication of the types of questions on the actual UMAT and ensured that there were very few surprises. I found that they were slightly harder than the real UMAT, which really helps provide confidence when you're reading the questions in the exam hall. Being slightly harder, the practice exams also allow you to work out the right time management strategy, which is essential. This results in a candidate being able to finish all the questions in the real UMAT, which is a huge bonus.

MedEntry is an absolute help!

[Sandeep is now studying medicine at Melbourne University with the help of a National Medical Scholarship. In addition to his outstanding UMAT score, he obtained a perfect ENTER score as well as perfect scores in all six of his year 12 subjects]

So I don't know who you're talking about lol.
And you don't need 6 50s to be godly. Getting 45+s is good enough for the real world
=].

But neither of them actually did 6 subjects in year 12.
