Are the session things that they have any different from what you can just simply read from vtac guide or a brochure?
Besides getting free stuff and talking to current students, what is good about it? Unsure whether or not to give up a whole day to go to Monash tomorrow
-
I've just come back from the peninsula one. Besides the freebies you get a feel of the place i guess and it was also good to speak to current students.
-
Did you go to any of the session things in the lecture theatres? I kinda just wanna go to know what the clayton campus is like, HUGE... and free shit

I was only there for like 45 minutes or so, collected some stuff, spoke to some current students and left.
If you're intending to study at clayton next year maybe it would be a good idea to go seeing as it is so huge.

Mm everyone seems to only go for like 15 minutes to collect some stuff... no one has said anything about the sessions. Last time i went UoM, i was there for like 5 hours collecting bagfuls of stuff
-
asking the people for somehtings that arent clarified in the book!

Emailing solves that, as well as providing the written confirmation. Asking in person risks receiving incorrect information, and no way to prove you were told the wrong thing when you complain

okay. my opinion sucked sorry. :P lol

My gf is going tomorrow, I've never been to any open days so I will repeat what she told me.
So besides the free stuffs, there are lectures about what courses are about and you can ask the person from the courses' faculty information about anything afterwards (job prospects etc etc) especially if you are unsure about which course you want to do.

Lol, I think this year at UoM open day, I'll be spending most of my time going to info sessions etc., I'd imagine that the vast majority of free stuff would be course brochures?
-
It's worth going, if for nothing else than to just see the campus. The lectures can also be really informative, particularly if you're thinking about choosing majors.
-
Instead of lectures, would you get the same info from brochures + talking to students? 30 minutes in a theatre would be hell...
-
It's not that bad, last time I went to an accounting session on open day, and they were giving away free USBs (2Gigs lol) for people who contributed xD
-
yay. a free 2gb usb :P just kidding. but even more reason for me to go. i'll definitely be there :)
-
Last time i got a handful of lollipops that stuck to the wrapper :(
-
I only go because I need to re-stock my stationary.
-
You realise you guys can walk around uni anytime... no-one would know you weren't a uni student... no-one would care.
Just don't come in your school uniform, otherwise you'll look like a wanker.
Open Days are useful in the sense that they expose you to information and options that you probably haven't even thought about yet.
They put ideas on the table for you to toss around, and often open days really help you decide whether you like a university or not.

So i guess the only thing that you can't get outside of an open day is the chance to talk to current students about their experiences
-

Well, I have planned 4-5 hours of being in theatres out of info sessions and sample lectures and I'm going to spend the rest of the day like talking to students/tutors etc. and visiting colleges :P I hope that it will give me more ideas about what the courses are like, outside what's already provided on the brochures. There's not that many extra places to visit, as such as I've been into uni quite a few times already (though not on an open day).
-

Well if you email the coordinator of a subject/course they might be able to put you in touch with some current students, but yeah, Open Day makes that process much easier.
I never bothered to go, I knew what I wanted from uni so it wasn't that important to me. If you want to spend the day in lectures and walking around the campus then you might as well go, it's not too bad.
-
They are worth going if you haven't seen much of the campus and to get a feel for the uni. It's good to go to potential interstate universities like ANU, for example, if you want to do a course there rather then just accepting an offer and hoping for the best..
-
I only go because I need to re-stock my stationary.
lol
-
I was going to go to monash but hardly anyone wanted to go because it was like 2 hours to get there and 2 hours to get home..
-
I think the sole benefit is to speak to teachers here. The students are only going to give glowing reviews of the university, and most campuses are pretty decent. In any case, it's not like the gates are locked until open day. You could theoretically walk through at any time. Anything else you need to know about the Uni is pretty evident in the booklets your career counsellor would give you and their reputation.
I've only ever been to one (Swinburne 2009).

Yes that. :)
By the way, at UoM last year, they were giving away popcorn, fairy floss and uniquely, Krispy Kreme donuts.
If that entices anyone this year. :P
-
No kk donuts today @ monash... got a pen and some minties. WASTED MY DAY :(

Well there was a sign saying FREE SAUSAGES... but then the line was about 200 people long. so it wasn't really free... it costed about 2 hours of your time

The one I went to needed a gold coin donation and the line was pretty empty because we got there early.
It was pretty useless. I got a ruler and a pen and another bag to add to my growing collection.
-
Lol yeah, you always end up going home with a bag full of booklets you're never going to touch
-
Lol... my bookshelf is already starting to look like a careers office... well, sort of anyway. :P
But I'm going to open day for advice mainly, not freebies :D
-
Hey,
If you want advice I think for Melb you can contact the Registrar there or something, and you can book a time to talk with someone.
-
LOL.
I went to the MONASH University Open Day today... it was good. The people/students that I talked to helped me to clarify a few things about the courses that I wanted to do.
+ I got 2 free highlighters. the free bag was alright. :P

AWW WHAT YOU GOT HIGHLIGHTERS?! :(
-
LOL.
I was in the 'Robert Blackwood Hall' - i.e. Law Area... when I got them... I quickly grabbed 1 highlighter from the front desk... then the lady noticed me and was like... 'take 2'... I was 'alright'... :P
-
Aww i didn't go to law area.
I was in the arts building, and i tried to take a chupa chup, ended up conversing with the lady on "gender studies" for a good 10 minutes...
And had to take her cd, felt bad
-
I went to the Monash Clayton open day today but gee my mum went crazy on those free bags.... now we have 5 of them in our house o_o. boy was it cold~!
-
Haha dam not enough freebies at monash clayton today!
Only got pen, highlighter and like 5 rulers LOL
Engineering had all the good stuff, making those bouncy balls was pretty cool.
Speaking to some of the students were quite helpful though. As i am now considering a degree i otherwise wouldnt have thought of.

LOL yeah so many people were making it so i thought might as well, was pretty cool, just that it was sticky when it was wet.
Haha i think tons of people left theirs there.
-
Well, i always thought Monash would be the perfect environment for me untill i went to the open day.... i totally dislike the location and buildings. lol
-

Lol i thought it would be like all new and shiny buildings etc
Then im like... wtf its so dirty and old looking, and the lecture theatres look like vampire dens
-
lol you guessed WRONG!
there are a few new buildings... like the strip and the new biomed place at the back there and they are remodelling the menzies and building 25 is quite good ... but yeah i think the eng and science places are old
but anyway who cares about the look of the buildings
-
But i thought monash had like one of the TOP engineering facilities... why is it all dirty?!
-
I like building 25 it's very modern and clean (went to marketing session on open day). Its the perfect place i'd want to be during a lecture
-
The LIBRARY LOOKS SICK! I could live in there... the perfect atmosphere
-
thats why u dont do engineering, and u do pharmacy at parkville.
parkville campus has a very respectable reputation with one of the best (if not the best) pharmaceutical facilities that's is offered in australia.
also its pretty clean and the campus is pretty dam small (3 or 4 buildings) consisting of 3 lecture rooms and like 4 tutorials. also not too hard to get to'
best of all, all the lecturers are from parkville campus and teachers there and only there (no dodgy lecturers basically)
(ps. cbs grammar)

Ahh well i haven't seen parkville campus but i'm probably gonna go check it out when i go melb uni open day. If it's nice, then i'll probs do chem eng/pharm sci so i get a taste of both unis :P
-
Well, if you've looked up the eng/pharmaceutical course this is basically what happens:
1st year: Parkville (pharmaceutical year 1)
2nd year: Clayton (yeah clayton..) engineering year 1 + pharmaceutical year 2 units
3rd year: Parkville (pharmaceutical year 3 + rest of year 2 units)
4th + 5th year: clayton (engineering)
i think its something like that, basically still 3 years in clayton
-
Yeah i've researched that course, and im pretty sure waht you said is wrong.
1st year is pharmsci year 1
2nd: engineering 1st & 2nd year squished together
3rd: pharmsci years 2&3 squished
4th & 5th: squished 3rd & 4th of engineering (requires overloading +2 units)

The science lecture rooms are really dirty and poor conditioned seats like the one in Building 24 S6 :/
the dull day didn't brighten anything either (only thing that brightened me was the 6 free pencils I got xD)

yeah, if you're doing eng/sci/biomed, hargrave will pretty much become your second home.

The new brownless library at melbourne looks like a strip club. Pink decor and fluffy curtains...what were they thinking?
If you're going to open day next week, make sure you drop by and check it out lol
-
what on earth are *fluffy* curtains?
-
Monash Uni needs to hire some professional designers..
-
You're going adelaide and UNSW?
-
what on earth are *fluffy* curtains?
Well they're gauzy and sheer, fluffy just seemed like an appropriate word. See the photos here
