A, which was a tad dissapointing...

I heard that because there were a few people who got 100% they couldn't give A's to anyone under 90??

^^ . remember your B+ can be like really high B+. like borderline A . I know an A just feels better but your B+ could be like 1 mark of an A.

well, we can still crack a low 40 with high A+ end of years and SAC's :P haha

That's true. One of my sister's friends got a B+ on the mid year for chem and got 40. So it's possible. But you need ridiculously amazing end of year results.

Its interesting looking at the poll... like, 20 minutes ago, the majority had A+s, but now its starting to even out into "average" good marks. (There seems to be a higher standard for "average" on this site...)
Title: Re: Chem Results
Post by: Studyinghard on August 02, 2010, 03:49:47 pm
Whats the maximum I can get now with a high B+ for sacs, and A for this exam? (lets just say I ace end of year which is kind of impossible but no harm in dreaming :P)

43 would be maximum I'd say. But you would need to absolutely smash the end of year.

seeing as the mid year was rather simple, i can envisage that the end of year one is going to be screwed...

I feel for those who aren't satisfied with their results, but isn't it a "You get what you put in" sort of things?

If you ask me, an A is still a good result.
I wish you all well for your further studies.

Remeber: ATAR doesn't mean everything, I know 3 people who are currently doing medicine; they just had to do extra work at university and such.
Title: Re: Chem Results
Post by: matt123 on August 02, 2010, 04:13:09 pm
not really

i got 95% + on last 5 years bio exams
98% average for sacs

got a B on the mid year exam .. studied my ass off
just made heaps of silly mistakes
very very dissapointed
probz gonna commit lol
i need 36-37 RAW SCORE for chem .. so about 41-42 scaled
and i feel . i have absolutely no chance of 36 raw with a B mid year . even if i get A+ end of yyear

good game pharmacy ...cya later uni dreams

It doesn't always come down to "You get what you put in" and i think that's is why some people are disappointed with their marks. Without even opening my result, I know it definitely doesn't reflect the amount of effort I've spent studying. At the end of the day, its just a grade, it doesn't determine where you'll end up in the future so just brush it off and put a smile on your face ;]
Title: Re: Chem Results
Post by: Studyinghard on August 02, 2010, 04:19:42 pm
Lets turn this around for everyone who is disappointed with a B+. Lets say your B+ is low, like really low and you wanted an A right?

So you would be off by like what 4 or max 5 marks from an A out of 75?

You can still recover this at the end of the year! if you ace end of year and only lose like 2 or 3 marks you've in a sense covered up the gap am i right/? Sure losing only 2 or 3 is not going to be easy but dont give up hope.

I'm sure as sure. She didn't get a special consideration thing either (because she wasn't going through a bad situation). She said she was "shattered" but then "worked [her] butt off", and viola, 37. I'm using it as my motivation too :)

Wow of lot of us want to do pharmacy! I didn't realise :)
The lowest ATAR score intake that Monash took in for Pharmacy was a 90 point something- but that person must have smashed the UMAT. (I actually think that is confidential information- my careers counsellor had to log into something to see those results)

B+

STOKED.

I was expecting way worse. I never ventured into the Chem exam discussion board because I thought I had stuffed up beyond belief. I know B+ isn't something worth bragging about (especially on VN lol) but somehow I got the second highest mark in my cohort, lolol.

GOOD JOB GUYS! :) I hope everyone is happy with their score. If not, well, there's always Unit 4, hurrah. :)

B+

hey minilunchbox, what were your bio marks from last year? just wondering :)

Midyear: A SACs: A End of year: A+

I SHOWED HER!! such an improvement from D's on both last years year 11 exams!

hahaha sooo rapt and relieved!!

Definitely possible.
You should aim for a high A/low A+ on the end of year though. Doesn't seem like an unreasonable aim, seeing as you've gone from Ds to a B.
Good Job :D

B+ exam, A+ sacs what would i need to get on the end of year exam to get 35 raw?

Probably anything from a low B to a high A, depending on how high your B+ and A+ is. You should aim higher though. You can potentially get a 40 (or more) if you get a decent A+ on the end of year exam.

Nobody got A+s in Accounting in our school. I can't believe the cutoff is 67/75. I DEFINATELY GOT MORE THAN 8 MARKS OFF. I lost everything on the fractional distillation question AND i copied the temperature wrong OFF the graph. So I don't know how the hell that little plus sign is sitting in my paper.

ummmm i thouhg they arbitarily ONLY can give 9% of ppl an A+.....lol... again just doing off the fact that 35% of ppl in the poll so far that have actually sat the exam got an A+ isn't exactly a fair indicator of the true percentage of ppl that got an A+......

^Oh my teacher was saying something about the A+ only including the top 7% of students this year; she may have been guessing but if this is a possibility then getting an A+ is already above 40, and an A could include ~40 score. Which is good!

The Unit 3 exam was way too easy.  They're gonna have to make the next one harder to filter out the very best from the rest.

I was talking to my co-ordinator and he said that they generally make the Unit 3 and 4 exams at the same time. So both exams tend to be of roughly equal difficulty.

If u get an high A or A+ u can get around that (for exam 2).

Hey guys got a C for chem reckon i could get a SS of 35 raw or at least 30?
30 is definitely possible, with a C+ Average throughout unit 3 and 4 you will get a 30. Because you did not get C+ for Exam 1, simple logic dictates that you will need a B (B+ to make sure) in Exam 2 for a solid 30.

In terms of a 35, High SAC Averages (A+) And a High A in Exam 2 will certainly do the job
Title: Re: Chem Results
Post by: _avO on August 03, 2010, 09:36:32 pm
High B+ may be around 33, but a High A and you may be competitive enough for a 35

Title: Re: Chem Results
Post by: _avO on August 03, 2010, 09:39:03 pm
Yes it's raw (34 -> 40)

A - Sacs
B+ - Exam 1
B+ - Exam 2

Amount of study prior the SAC.. hmm.. 30 minutes

Amount of study prior the exams, 2 days comprising of extracts from 10 different past exams (LOL yea pathetic right?)

I got a B+ also, for my Accounting exam. It's definitely possible for a 40 but it will take a lot of hard work. You will need really exceptional marks on SACS (maybe 95%) and an almost perfect score for exam 2 (maybe lose 3-4 marks max).

I also hated probability dude and I didnt really own the sacs (around 15/20 average per SAC)
Hm.. tips on integration and differentiation? Someone else can fill you in
Title: Re: Chem Results
Post by: Studyinghard on August 03, 2010, 09:47:02 pm
I dont think getting really high SAC marks is as important as owning the exam. Just have that target of not losing more than 3-4 marks in every practice exam you do and dont look back ;)
Title: Re: Chem Results
Post by: _avO on August 03, 2010, 09:50:01 pm
Personally, SAC marks to me boost morale and motivation to work harder. For example in Business management I haven't dropped a mark in any of the 5 SACs so I am more motivated to study harder come the exam

But if you can get a 95% average on sacs (or ranked top 5 in your cohort) it will definitely show that you are well and truly capable of perfecting the exam in November and in turn will make you think that you can perfect it (which is more important)

do alot of practice questions.
preferably from cambridge checkpoints or A+ studynotes, just find as many diff. questions as possible and do them, make it become second nature so the majority of the sac can be completed in autopilot..
and yeah, wiht a high A upwards and good sac marks u can easily pull of a 40 in bio... i got very low A+ on the first exam, boredring on A, and managed to do ok..

Its a bit off-topic but oh well, we're here to learn.

Tips:
KNOW THAT the antiderivative of sinx is indeed -cosx, and all the variations to this
You might get a
a) "derive this" (most likely a product function)
b) hence determine the antiderivative of 'that'
eg. a) derive x^2(logex)
(The answer is 2xlogex + x)
b) hence antiderive 5x(logex). Know the simple algebraic manipulations

log recognition is pretty popular for examining
whenever you get a fraction comprising of two functions, check to see if the top function is the derivative of the bottom
this is really a time saver in most cases where people attempt to solve it

in general:
KNOW THE FORMULAS back to front (dont get confused between deriving and antideriving in the case of n+1 or n-1 powers)
read the questions carefully, tricks are placed to determine the smart from the smartest

know the chain rule for rates (also know formulas for spheres, cones, cylinders, etc)

area between curves, etc. (dont forget you subtract an area of its under the x axis)

also try to simplify as much as possible, take out common factors etc. anything to reduce possible algebraic screw ups cos you know thats embarassing
last but definitely not least, check your batteries (take a spare, there have been countless times where i've seen people fail sacs due to their calc dying)

EDIT: btw dont take this as a checklist i know i've missed out on a lot of content

Title: Re: Chem Results

I honest dont think you can get a 45 with A for mid years. this is my opinion alright

cos high A = top10%
Assume you have high A+ for ur end of year top 1%
And then you have a high A+ for sacs top 1%

That averages out to be top 4% and a 45 is top 2%.

If you think about it that way then only around a 42 MAYBE 43 is possible. I also thought ur A in ur mid years will lower ur sac mark, since a good exam mark scales up ur sac marks.

Your cohorts performance in the exams influence your sac marks - i.e. if your cohort goes well, your sac marks scale up. So to an extent your individual exam performance does affect your sac marks, but it's minimal (the larger the cohort the smaller the effect).

There were 6 A+'s, 3A's and 4 B+'s in my class of 22. The other class in my school, however, did not perform as well (highest score was a B+). Having said that, seeing as how only one person got above 40 in chem at my school last year, I think my cohort is travelling fairly well.

The exam really counts I suppose. I do care about my sac marks but more because of the confidence booster and the fact that it might half prove I'm on the right track. I've never actually been bothered by how they affect my raw...at the end of the day its almost 100% exam.

I also thought ur A in ur mid years will lower ur sac mark, since a good exam mark scales up ur sac marks.

your not thinking about it right.
getting 3 mid A+ is ~45
say if one of those A+ becomes higher and the lower low it's still ~45
say if two of those A+s become much higher and then one of these goes down to an A it balances out to still ~45

yeh, A+ A A+ for methods can get you 48, so yeah very possible to get A and still get high 40's

If you are the 10th best in your class in your SACs, you will get the 10th highest exam mark in that class irrespective of your own exam score. Even if you got the best exam score in the class, the smart kid who came first in the SACs will take your exam mark and that will become his SAC mark.

In theory yes, but outliers may occur.
We had a cohort of around 100 kids in Bus Man, and a girl who wouldve been sitting around top 15-20, got the highest exam mark by far, and got a 49, the next closest being 44....

Yep and 'that' 44 would have been sitting on a sac ranking of around 20-25th out of 100. And yet others who had close to perfect sac scores ended up with lower study scores.

if i got .. 15th for sac marks ... with a sac average of 88% ( my class is extremly smart)

but then .. i only got a B for the exam .. and ALOT OF PEOPLE fuked up the exam ..
does that mean im gonna get approx the 15th exam mark ( C+ or C ) for my sac mark ... when infact it should be a A or so with 88%
???
if thats right , then vcaa are fkin stupid kents and im giving upo with vce rofl ...

the 15th exam mark would be a C or D
but its fkin bullshit because my sacs which i really worked hard for averaged from 80% to 100% .. and in the end i had 88% average ..

Read this.

okay I think I sort of get it

School A
In School A, student a has the highest coursework score (90) and the highest external score (89). After moderation, student a stays at the top of the group with a moderated score set equal to the school's highest external score (89). Students b and c have equal coursework scores (79), but student b has a higher external score (70) than student c (67). They receive identical moderated scores (73) and remain equal third in the school's rank order. Student d has the lowest coursework score (52) and the lowest external score (40). After moderation he/she stays at the lowest score.

Lets say there is student e who had sac coursework of say 70 but got equal highest external mark as student A. what happens then?

I don't think the system would work that way..
Because teachers would just give out 100% scores for all SAC's and that would ruin the system....
The system should work because, the first person should get the highest exam mark, the second ranked should get the second highest exam mark and so on. (this is the point of ranking isn't it?? )

Pretty sure there's at least some humour in that sig

Anyway, with the sac/exam thing...don't worry about it. It's seriously out of your control and exists only to make comparisons easier. If you get good exam marks you'll get a high study score, if you don't then you won't. The whole point of moderating sac marks against exam marks is because the VCAA can't control your school.

haha that was the best. 1 week off school before exams to study and also derived scores for the majority of the school which was not effected at all. The level your mark gets boosted is dependant on your SACs and end of year exam.

you really should have applied for a derived score if you had a chest infection =\ that way if you got an A+ on the end of year 40 would be within reach =\

The problem with VCAA giving you an A for your SACs would mean that teachers could give out really high marks and their students would all get good marks no matter what. Last year I got an A+ on my exam but the "deadshits" in my class, including the prizewinner managed to all get B+ and A on the exam which brought my sacs down considerably, and screwed up my study score. It is what happens when a teacher give high SAC marks to kids which gives them an impression they are doing really well, then come exam time they screw up.

I was saying that scaling and moving the sacs is secondary to your exam marks. If you do exceptionally well in your exams, you'll be getting a 45+ score. If you don't do exceptionally well, you won't get that score. It's unfortunate that your SAC marks are that much higher than your exam mark - but to the VCAA it doesn't matter. They can't control the difficulty of your SACs, so they can't use them to determine how "good" you are, so they're forced to use something else/change yours.

You might be upset, but the system is relatively good. There are what, 45 thousand students sitting the VCE? Any system that can handle that volume of students spread out across the state is pretty decent.

Did you even read my post, I was referring to the guy quoting the swine flu comment.

Sit down, relax and stop obsessing over your exam. It can only hurt your chances to do well later. If you want to use it as motivation, that'd be the best way to deal with it.

Yes you can still get 35. But from the general impression I have got so far, your teacher is an idiot. Always talk to your VCE coordinator for these things.

Remember your UNIT 3 Sac mark is 16% of your mark, so if you can stay at the top of your class and get rank 1 or 2, then get A+ on your exam you can end up with like:
B+ B A+ =33-37

I agree with this, if you were coughing from a chest infection then you sound like a candidate for a DES.

On the 35 thing, I got a B and an A+ and got a 37 (not in chem) with average sac marks, so I would say that 35 is achievable.

A+ (finally checked lol)
- shaded in the wrong box for a multi choice that was so easy (S-S one) i didn't bother to check over.
- the extra 0 i randomly added in for that question, i did at the start, so i lost 2 marks there for that even though the rest was right
- accidentally read the pH/temp thing wrong, got confused with symbols
- misunderstood the last question and got 2 wrong there
fml, all stupid things and i knew the course so well.

- accidentally read the pH/temp thing wrong, got confused with symbols
- misunderstood the last question and got 2 wrong there
fml, all stupid things and i knew the course so well.
there goes my high 40's....
Was this all provided with your statement of marks ($8.80)?

It just had the questions i got wrong with a 0/2 for example next to it, and then i looked through a copy of the exam and realised, etc.

thanksss. but my dreams of 45+ will be so difficult now, i will aim for 44-45; that's still a very good score :)

yeah, 45 is still awesome.  it scales to ~48, so that is a really nice score. :)

I think I struck every single booby trap lol... knew the course so damn well..

same, fell for stupid stuff.
ok i will study harder this time, i got a little bit arrogant along the way, "oh i know this, i'll just skip it" and ending up with less time suspected to go over everything in the real exam. arghhh my fault for not being more careful &reading..

ok andrew, we will not be fooled by the next tricks they give us!

Does anyone know how many people got full marks? I'd assume there'd be at least half a dozen across the state...

two low A+s aren't enough for a 40 raw :S?
and adding to what m@tty said, whens the examiner's report coming out?

two low A+'s are ~40, and depending on SACs marks could be 42-43 if they aren't that low A+s and SACs ranking is high.

i would become jewish if i got 37+ raw chem
considering a B mid  year ... and hence 37 raw would need almost full marks end of year and high A+ sacs

in other words
thank god im not becoming jewish ....

well B mid year
and apprently my sac score is dropping from A to a C because of my class
therefore .. high A+ / B / Csacs = 35ish in my eyes
38 would be ridiculously hard

~39 possible, but so unlikely to get the absolute min cutoff and lowest A+ ranking at school.

You still have time to improve your ranking and equally your class has a chance to improve the moderation of your SACs in the next exam.

And what, are you a moslem or something? What you got against Jews?

matt, I really liked you, but I think you need to get over the SAC thing, i mean SACS count and an A for a SAC compared to a C would have been nice, but:
*That's half of the total SAC marks
*You still have this term like everyone has been telling you
*The exam is more important
and most importantly, what I noticed throughout your posts is this:

you can't be angry at the system for dropping your sac marks due to the class rankings when it also got affected by the B you got in the exam of your own accord. And that B, which was all you, affects the raw more than the SAC.

Sorry to be harsh, but just saying like it is...

He is getting a derived score (unless swine flu magically disappeared in the day between the physics and chem exam) and also aiming for full marks for the end of year. Assuming good SACs he should be able to make 45 comfortably.

To be honest I dont read the news much but... CAN YOU EVEN GET SWINE FLU DURING THAT TIME. I THOUGHT IT WAS LAST YEAR....

That's what I thought, but his sig says otherwise =S

Unless his whole derived score claim is bogus, though, he should receive quite a high score for the mid-year, given he achieves his goal for the next exam.

people get full marks all the time lol
every year there is a massive handfull that get full marks
the only subject which people fail to get full marks in is usually biology and possibly english .. then again heaps still do

Yeh I know, but Im just saying it requires other factors such as luck and just how people feel on the day

Yea, there are a LOT more people capable, on a 'good' day (determined by luck, health, etc.), of attaining full marks than those who do.
