For SACs so far I'm getting what I assume are failry decent marks, B-B+ average I *think* even tho I only received a rough mark for my first SAC of B+ (slow teacher), and overall I've improved other than messing up my perfectly written oral due to nervousness (stuffed up from first sentence, hopefully will get marked on what I wrote on paper).
Other than that, how hard is it to get a really decent mark? do you have to be some literary genius who enjoys reading novels and writing short stories in your free time? English is definitely the subject I neglect most and need some tips on really acing my end of year if possible. My teacher is no help, she has the most disorganized classes I've yet seen and spells words like "dilemna" and "amoung"...
-
I don't think it's that hard... I mean, I got a 38 and I'm not all that great at English. I think a B+ average is fine. Just think about it, you're competing against 40,000 others. Imagine the thousands who get Ds. You'll be fine.
-
^At above, you should really know how it works before you say stuff like that. Of the 41000+ students that did English last year, only 5% D+ or lower. That's just over 2000. You're making it sound a lot more than it is.
Looking at it from a totally statistical point of view, the grade distribution shows that a B / B+ average would place you anywhere from 60-70%? Depends if you're a high B+ or a low B average.

Study scores have a mean of 30 and standard deviation of 7, so a 35 would place you around the top 76%. A 35 from there is just solid work throughout the rest of this year, and maybe a few A's in remaining SACS and the exam?
As for studying for it, I guess practice essays and get feedback from a person that isn't your current teacher if you think she isn't doing a good job. Study the contexts/themes/ideas and just read plenty of examples etc and learn from them. That's what I'm doing atm.
Read and write as much as you can, I guess.
-
To get 35 on the exam, you need roughly 70% on the exam. Your SAC scores might alter your SS by a point or two, but 70% is a safe bet.
-
By tutor got a 99.80 and a 50 for English - he said he was DEFINITELY no literature nerd or book worm..... in fact, he was more of a mathematical/science kind of student. (50'd those subjects too!)
-

LOL xD Well I really doubt that most 50's were like that.
-
Another quick question, if i were to get 8's for all my exam essays, and be in the top 10 of my cohort of 200+ people,
would a 40 be relatively safe?

Nah man, shit school would bring it down by about 5-10 SS :)

No way!
Only about 2 or 3.... VCAA has designed the system so that everyone has a fair go.

lol nah.... i just cbf doing anything todayyyyyyy ahhhhhhhhhh piss off context

A severe case of logical recursion there in that statement...
ONLY 2 or 3? FAIR?

Hahaha... I just think 5 - 10 sounds a bit crazy.
I go to a relatively crap school and the highest score for English was still a 48.
-
*copy and paste previous post*
Once again... 'relatively crap' and 'still a 48' cannot be in the same sentence.
My school last year's highest was a 43 english, with ~6 kids over 40. No one got over 40 in spesh, methods or chem either.
-
Ah.. yes, they CAN be in the same sentence.
The highest for English was a 48.
The dux got a 99.80 with perfect 50s in Further Maths, Accounting and Psychology.
And I'm not kidding...
-
And by the way... the dux didn't get a 48 in English.. that was another student.
The dux got a 44 in English.
-
I think we had a guy that got 49 in VET IT?
yeah... eat that!
-

LOL.
-
A 49 which scaled down to what..?
-
how hard is it for a 30+ then with my not so good essays? :(
-
I don't like the way you people mock others who do not get very high scores. So what if your school doesn't have someone who gets over 40 in a subject? My school hasn't had anyone with over 40 in English in a while, but why should that matter? I might add, a 49 is a very good score, no matter what subject it is....
However if you are just joking around, it's not very funny.
Ha ha.
-
No idea lol.
The teachers at my school are so used to the kids trying so hard to get over 30...
when i asked how hard it is to get 40+ in methods, she was like OH NO WAY, ITS TOO HARD
-

Ha ha.
How are we mocking anyone? We're discussing the fact that we both go to bad schools and how detrimental it is to our scores

What I am trying to say here is that a high study score, in ANY subject, is still possible regardless of the school you go to.
The dux at my school got a 99.80 with 50s in Accounting, Psychology and Further Maths.. subjects that people usually see as 'easy' and cannot score well with.
Yet, these perfect study scores were still very much achievable in a school like mine.. only 5% of the year 12 cohort gets over 90.

We have at least 5 over-40s for Methods each year... and I'm not joking. It is still achievable, trust me. I don't like the way you people mock others who do not get very high scores. I think you're being a bit of negativist here... you can still get bloody good scores.

Mao is proof that you can go to an "average" school and still get good results. Blaming others is just finding an excuse for you getting a "detrimental score".
-
You can't get bloody good scores if you go to a shit school and your ranking is near bottom... regardless of how good you go in exams. The system is too dependent on a fair internal marking system and unbiased teachers. I probably shouldn't have pissed teachers off near the start of the year... :(
-

Lol I understand where you're coming from. My school is... let's say, not the best. But hey, isn't it yourself who has made you ranked "near the bottom"? If you say that other people are "detrimental" to your scores, but then you say you are ranked near the bottom.... I don't understand. If they didn't perform as well, wouldn't you be a higher rank? Just putting it out there.
At my school for further maths, I had awesome SAC scores (near perfect). Come the results, they were moderated down to an A despite me getting A+s for my exams. Wtf. But yeah life goes on, and I guess it sucks for those people who want to achieve 99.95 (haha like your alias). It is true that the moderation can be unfair, but there's nothing we can do about it. Just work your hardest for the exams.

Well if that's the case... I'm ranking at the top of each of my subjects! :D
And yes, Mao... did bloody well in year 12!
Even this guy from Cranbourne Secondary College even got over 99... highly unexpected!

Exactly right akira!
Can I ask what you got for Literature and Further?
-
Well just as an example, ill use chemistry.
Our internal SAC score/rank is not only dependent on the test SAC things... but she averages out EVERYTHING including in class work, prac writeups as well...
So even though i've got 100% on most of my test SAC's, my ranking is not even top 5 because she hates me and marks all my pracs to like 50%, thus my average is horrible...
-
I know where you're coming from 99.95. I'm ranked top 2 in further but I know I have no chance of getting a good SS because the rest of my cohort are a bunch of dropkicks, they all get less than 10% on every sac. In chem our average mid-year marks were like a C and my teacher was congratulating us, wtf? Same story goes for methods. I'll be lucky to get above an 83..
-
Well rubiks you should be fine... you're ranked high enough I guess.
-
Yeah, but I HAVE to get A+ on both exams in further to have any chance of getting a good SS. One mistake and I'm finished. And in saying that, a 40 in further which would be A+ for the exams is equivalent to a 33 in chemistry and a 31/32 in methods. Is there really any point in even studying for it?
-

yes, do heaps of practice exam, if you are ranked high in your school than you already have some knowledge. getting 40+ is definitely obtainable its pretty much 90% across both exams combined, sound achievable? if yes, think about only lose a few marks and than 45+ is in range.
-
Did not read the 3 pages but here we go anyway.
I got a 39 last year, with pretty shitty B-B+ averages in SACs. On my exam I had 19/20, 17/20, and 13/20 (voxi, eat a dick). So yeah, if you do well on the exam there's still hope.
-
^ that gives me hope.
My average is about a B+, i hope i smash it.
Did you think you actually deserved a 19 and 17/20? Or was it a surprise to you?
and also, did you have a strong cohort? because thats a decent score for a pretty crappy avg.
-

I think the marks I got in the exam I deserved. I did my text response on AMFAS, by the time of the exam I had read the book about 10-15 times (most of those in the 2 weeks before the exam). I'm positive that that's why I did so well in that section. To be honest the 17 was a bit of a surprise. The prompt we had for I&B was similar to one I did 2 weeks before, so I churned out that essay. However I had to change some things and got a bit muddled up so the overall quality wasn't that strong.
My cohort wasn't that great, from memory there might of been no more then 4 people who scored over 40.
-
thats sick as, alright thanks :D

the message here is 'study hard and you will be rewarded'

it would have gone down max to 38, but considering she knows her results and what not you would assume that it is scaled.
39 raw?

Jesus... you read AMFAS 10-15 times?! i've only read it properly once and the exam is in 4 days! shit

Lol my methods teacher said that to me as well... although it was in response to getting over 30 :-\
-
Ok so if I got around 7-8 for text response and language analysis and about 5-6 for context response and averaged out about B+ in my SACs what can I expect to get?
