hii,
i was just wondering if anyone listens to music while studying or thinks it is completely distracting xD
i listen to music because cant stand it being so quiet yet when i do listen to music i tend to sing along and get distracted from work. HAHAHA =) i wierd; i know.
So i listen to yiruma, if you know it..it is like piano compositions but im getting really bored of it and i was wondering if someone could recomend so music =D
thanks :P

Listen to slow jams :)
-
I listen to music when working about half of the time, especially when doing maths. I can't concentrate if it's English work though :)
-
I listen to anything that doesn't have a fast beat. Unfortunately, that rules out a lot of new pop stuff.
Checking iTunes, my most recently played songs from when i was studying are by: 30 seconds to mars, nickelback and bon jovi. (also, yes i have weird/shit taste in music, I know)

this.
-
yeah I always listen to j/c/k pop while doing uni work now.
when i was in year 12, i listened while doing maths, never for english though.
during exam periods i'd make playlists which go for exactly 2 hours, so i listened to them while doing practise papers haha, i'd then try set goals, eg, finish off multiple choice Q 15 before a certain song starts LOL

hey man
def do NOT study with music with lyrics . thats a no go
but ur piano music shud be good .. i sometimes do .. although when doing chem work .. its hard to concentrate
if u can concenttrate . shouldn't be a problem . just dont keep it too loud and dont focus on it.
-
Also, be mindful that in exams you do not get music, so if you get used to it with work the silence may be detrimental to your performance. But, of course, exams are not everything, so by no means let this stop you.
Music is actually beneficial, though, in most cases I think.
-
When I study with music I work 10 times slower but I do it anyway
I should really stop.
-
I reckon music while doing homework is okay... relatively peaceful music like classical perhaps (I listen to way too much musical theatre but anyway). I tend to listen to music after a few hours of study, when and if I'm starting to get a little tired/bored. Normally, if you're studying, according to TSFX, don't listen to music because it doesn't help with memory retention at all.

Yep & according to psychology it does. Which is why i try to never do it!
But sometimes classical, or ambient, basically nothing with vocals.
-
Nothing with vocals... well, I've failed on that part, though I don't listen to anything with a really strong beat... just musical theatre. I need to go to NYC someday and see lots of shows. That would be good. Melbourne only has like 3 major ones each year. Classical music is pretty good, RACH 2! :) Does classical help you study or is it better without music at all?
What is the actual reason as to why it's bad? TSFX seem to make a lot of random observations, but is there any justification?

when you study .. you are transferring some informarion from Short term memory to Long term memory.
however ... the words/lyrics/beats/ and any other stimuli might effect/interfere with the transfer.
it is believed that there is a time of 30 mins for the physical changes in the brain to occur ( when memory is forming)
if something interferes with these changes .. then the info wont be completely set
-
^ classical music can help, but its a bit distracting at times as i get into the music (LOL) or i tend to just ignore it, ambient beats is better personally as i can work to the beat a bit more, and it is more predictable, unlike the stories involved in classical music. and yep to matt's reasonings, it also interfers with the transfer to short-term memory as we have pay attention to something to transfer it there, and since we can only think about (in working/short-term memory) 5-9 pieces of information, if we have lyrics or beats they could be part of those pieces and so our memory decreases, and ability to learn decreases in the long run as less is transferred along each 'journey' sensory-->short-term-->long-term.

i dono, i always listen to vocal music when i do maths lol, it helps me think clearer

i dono, i always listen to vocal music when i do maths lol, it helps me think clearer
yeh maths is a little diff though
its purely problem solving
if u listen to lyrics then do bio
u may get confused as the lyrics may interfere with the info being learned.
-
Okay. Thanks for the psych knowledge lol, yeah even classical music is hard to ignore, especially the climatic parts :D
It's still ok to do homework with music though isn't it?
TT: yeah, same. After ~3 hours of maths (problem solving) without music, I end up turning the music on to keep me thinking.
-
yeh, i dont think music affects me that much, i just put it on when i feel like it

I'll keep that on board then - that's probably a good point - don't listen to music while trying to retain information for bio!
999 posts :D
i mean music is good.
but i couldnt use it for bio/chem/psych/eng
its too hard to listen and concentrate at the same
but thats just me.

Well, I listen to music only when I study maths and accounting.. cause I usually listen to music that're not English.. and non-English songs distract me from thinking in a.... "English way".
-
I'm with TT
I listen to kpop when doing maths/chem etc. just not when doing english
I think the reason why it doesn't interfere too much is because it's pretty much considered non-vocal as you can't understand the lyrics. When I start listening to english songs I start getting distracted
-
I listen to Rachmaninov and Chopin while studying now :)

I listen to Rachmaninov and Chopin while studying now :)

but personally i cant do it whilst doing english/psych/bio
only during chem . since it dosnt need alot of memorizing .. its alot of maths work.

I've always listened to loud autotune kpop and stuff no matter what... even english/lit. Sometimes when it's quiet I find it aggravating. It doesn't affect me in exams or sacs because my nerves distract me from silence anyways and it's different. Music gets you in the mood to study :D

Agreed. Listening to French/Russian/Israeli/Spanish music while doing English and Accas. Trance/Classical for everything else.
If you're looking for the perfect music for maths (or the sciences) check out the Israeli trance band: Infected Mushroom. No vocals, no distractions. There is nothing better than sitting a Spesh prac at 2am with 1 hour to go and listening to this stuff.
