Title: Is this allowed/possible?
Post by: naved_s9994 on September 01, 2010, 05:48:08 pm
My sister's school is offering her (Currently Yr 9, going into Yr 10 next year) the chance to do Psycology (Dunno the spelling  :D ) and Legal studies in 2011 (Units 1)

Unit 1 only!

They say that the Unit 3/4's are generally based on Unit 1 only?

Okay Fair enough... that "may" be true...im not sure though I never done any of them to tell her if it is or not?
Obviously, she'd complete the Unit 2 Section at home...

HOWEVER, what is striking me is that... How can the school/VCAA allow any student to complete a 3/4 in Year 11 or even 12 without having done the Unit 1 and 2 of it?

Well legal can be done without 1 or 2, in fact there is about 5 in my class who didnt do either, so that seems fine. Don't know why she wouldn't just do both if she has the time.
Don't know about psych though, may be similar.

Well, i didn't do the unit 1/2 of Psychology, English Language, Further OR Physical Education, and I have not been affected in the slightest. You don't even need 1/2 it barely helps you most of the time, however, i would have preferred to do it for English Langauge but the others it's definitely unneeded.

Don't worry about it, tell her to focus on aspects of 3/4 if she's willing to self-study unit 2, as that's a better use of time..

I'm not so sure about the 3/4 being based on Unit 1 only holding true for all subjects. For some maybe.

Anyway, the VCAA just sets the assessment material (units 3 and 4) for students, they don't list prerequisite study. Whether or not it's a good idea is debatable (I think it is) but it's certainly possible.

lol MHS did the whole Unit 1 only thing too.

For both Psychology and Legal studies you don't need 1/2 anyway...?

This.
1/2 really doesn't help at all- for a couple subjects (3/4 Methods without 1/2 methods can be a big struggle)

Thanks Darcy,

The school isnt actually permitting her to take Unit 2 at school !

Wierd huh?

So yeah, she'd definetly take things up at home I suppose.
Thanks, and yeah I suppose Psychology must be for the same reason.

Thanks everyone, I get it now...
I believe its silly though... Only doing 3/4 Units , and leave 1 unit? Obviously the 1 unit, serves a purpose.

Not always, unit 1 psych doesn't help with 3 or 4.

My school offers Biology 3/4, Accounting 3/4, Further 3/4 and other subjects like Cisco and IT Applications 3/4... without doing the 1/2 of the subject and this is at Year 11 level.

I'm currently doing Accounting 3/4 in Year 11 and I didn't do Accounting 1/2 in Year 10 or 9. I was told that my school offers it as a taste for what it's like in Year 12, they told students not to a 'core' 3/4 subject like Methods (unless you've done Methods 1/2 in Year 10) etc. I think the schools just want students to see what it's like, doing a VCE in 3/4 subject (i.e. how the examination works), as opposed to just 1/2 subjects.

Speaking personally, I think that it's better to try a 3/4 subject in Year 11, even if you don't get 40+ or whatever, it will serve you well for Year 12.

Yer when I did Psych in year 10 they only offered Unit 2, I think they want to allow for greater options. If she did both 1/2 for her subjects there wouldn't be much room for other stuff. She'll be fine!

I got an A+ in unit 3 psych exam without doing 1+2. For subjects like this the unit 1+2 are only good for making up the required 16 units to pass VCE.

I did Psychology Unit 1 this year [ 10 ] and the only bit that will help me next year is "Resarch Methods" which can be easily self-taught.

I got a 50 in physics with only Unit 2, if that's helpful. It's better if they only concentrate on the relevant information, but to be honest, most material's encompassed entirely in the 3/4 course.

Yeah, that stuff is literally easy as pie.
