-

I like VATE because unlike the TSFX they have specific text sessions for lit. And it's cheaper, yet taught by teachers [ i think] who know the specifics of each text. I don't know how to compare it with TSFX for standard English. I just generally have an aversion to TSFX anyways.
-
English - School lecture with Ross Huggard, VU
Chemistry - School lecture with R Sette, VU
Spesh - MAV
Methods - Engage, VU
Not sure if I'll go to all of VU ones, and thinking about maybe access for chem or spesh.

I told you last Thursday... While you were awake...

you said u hadn't booked. And usually, i take your apathy as apathy. :).
-
I told you last Thursday... While you were awake...
Thank you for rubbing it in. Most glorious lesson of my life.
-
Is anyone doing NEAP seminars? If so, how important is that letter they sent you just after you signed up... the confirmation type one... i lost mine :(
-
OMGOSH i thought the VU bio lecture was today....
so i went in to werribee (yay for a 2 hour drive) and there was a corporate accounting lecture instead.
mortified.

-
so there will be a possible V meetup @ VU too then??
-
well i will be at the VU bio lecture, anyways
on the right date, too, this time
:D
-
are VU lectures good?
-
are VU lectures good?
irrelevant, theyre free lol
WHAT YOU MEAN, FREE
GOOD?
-
Yeah, who cares if they're any good they're free, i concur.
Anyway, the people they hire dont actually work for VU and are semi-legit decent (they only rob you when you're not looking) people to give lectures i reckon, the chem dude knows his stuff at least.
Im going VU chem and Bio so i guess ill see you guys there
-
VATE and TSFX.
I've missed the free VU lectures =[ and no one is going with me. =[
-
NEALE PETERS :D
-
OMG Engage was shit today for methods..
-
NEALE PETERS :D
He presented at the KLD lecture today so now I can't be bothered going to VU Chem one.
-
The access chem guy sounds really good
-
NEALE PETERS :D
He presented at the KLD lecture today so now I can't be bothered going to VU Chem one.
So... is that because he was good? or bad?
-
He was pretty good for unit 3 at VU.
-
NEALE PETERS :D

So... is that because he was good? or bad?
VU's pretty inconvenient for me to get to and I don't see the benefit in listening to the same person twice. Also I'm supposed to have a holiday class on the same day and I'd probably benefit more from going to that.
He's good but a bit boring and very, very slow. Content is great.

i'm in the same boat. VU is frickin far, and i've got a chem school revision day on the same time. i'm hoping the lecture will be more beneficial though... would you say it would help if im clueless for chem? or is it better for those who are already good
-
So that's where everyone's been; at lectures. I missed you guys!
-
ESL - TSFX, VU(for english)
Methods - Derrick Ha, VU
Accounting - VU, VCTA
Legal studies - VU
I thought of going to other lectures such as VATE, engage and some series 2 of tsfx but I'm really tired of going to too much now. I want to have more time exercising and have a healthy routine when studying during the holidays (the bundled lectures just made it unhealthy now :crazy2:)
-
how was KLD lectures anyone? i didnt go
the chem was good, he was boring but the notes were amazing
and methods just focused on probability which i didnt find that helpful since we just did it in class, but the lecturer was good
-
Anyone gonna go VU english? Im thinking of skipping it.
I dont see how its going to be helpful? Three Hours and everyone is doing different texts/contexts.

Yeah skip it, you'll regret going
-
how was KLD lectures anyone? i didnt go
english was ..... very boring. but it seemed like a lot of kids didn't know much relating to exams so they all asked questions.
but chem was good. and i even sat in the physics lecture until i realize i was in the wrong lecture...it was good from what i saw too :)

Yeah not to mention the travel time going there and back (2 hours total public transport)

All lectures are a waste of time and monay, who else agrees with me?
-
All lectures are a waste of time and monay, who else agrees with me?
With the exception of one, DERRICK HA
-
Um, I have his spesh book from last year, i couldn't find anything on variable force. does anyone know where it is.
-
I just realised its going to be an epic bitch to get to VU footscray... Stupid public transport... 2 hours (and i live on the west side too) and i gotta go monash after that for access chem
-
Um, I have his spesh book from last year, i couldn't find anything on variable force. does anyone know where it is.
There is an entire section on variable acceleration in this year's book. pg.73.
-
I'm going to the VATE literature seminar... should be great.
-
anyone find themselves at melbourne uni today for Engaged seminars? Legal Studies and I think Psychology was on. Legal was OK, but I could've probably given a more detailed lecture than the guy did... and it just draggeeeedddd ooonnnnnnnnn... 6 and a half hours is too long to be kept in a confined space.
-
im not going to any i dont think
i went to engage biology .. it was biggest waste of 7 hours of my life.
i would have learned more if i stood outside and watched my lemon tree grow.
i really wanna go to chem/english . but i feel like its just gonna be a waste of time
i went to chem mid year tsfx and it was also a waste of time and $100 lol
so idk man
wat u guys think?
also .. all the lectures are like ... now
do you know of any lectures closer to the exam?
-
yeah I agree, engage psych was pretty bad too.
-
yeah I agree, engage psych was pretty bad too.
yeah i heard
but hey
i honestly give the bio engage one
1/10 if that.
they went over less than half the course
in shit detail
and crap lecturer
-
Yeah, i reckon the longer lectures especially from companies that aren't VATE/TSFX (tsfx is terrible on its on but they do a good longer lecture) are pretty terrible.
Go for the shorter ones i reckom, you go to lectures for a summary not getting the whole text book read to you again...
The guy for access chem sounds pretty good though, assessor since 1986

hmm that sounds like chris dwyer? I saw him at the pathways education chem lecture. He was pretty good, he basically just went through questions. Although he didn't manage his time well, so he had to skip the last quarter of the lecture basically. Having said that, it'd still be worth it to go.

Pathways lecture is on the 10th of October so there is still heaps of time to apply. And it would basically be the same lecture.. Their psych one is really really awesome though.

I'm considering going Pathways to do Chem (but omg the presenters for the Psych one are so appealing. Damn you time clashes.)

Just letting you know now that the second lecturer for chem is bloody hilarious. Like the funniest lecturer I've ever seen! You'll probably be laughing more than learning about chem haha.
-
to be completely honest
ive been to many lectures
access/tsfx/neap/engage/some "VCE" one / some lecture from the guy who wrote the psychology book / some other random chem one.
none of which where worth the time or money.
2.5 - 7 hours of nonsense
i HIGHLY DISCOURAGE anyone to go to engage ... srsly ur better of sitting at home watching ants have sex.. u will learn more about inheritance/genes ....
bio engage lecture was honestly biggest waste of time possible.
-
Are the VU very high quality or something? O_O Most people on VN are going to at least one VU lecture, haha.
-

Maybe just cos it's free and took about 5 seconds to sign up for 2198361293 lectures

I feel like I learnt more bio from watching this youtube video (SLUG SEX) last year than going to the Engage/VCEseminars bio lectures. SERIOUSLY IF YOU DO BIO WATCH THIS VIDEO... because it's cool, not too sure about it's actual usefulness for the exam.
Are the VU very high quality or something? O_O Most people on VN are going to at least one VU lecture, haha.
VU are free. And honestly, their lecturers are actually very good.
-
Oh sweet, could anyone give me the link to the VU lectures? (Even though i'm only in year 11)
Thanks!
-
http://www.vu.edu.au/future-students/secondary-schools/year-11-and-12-students/vce-summary-lectures
They're only for Unit 4.
-
I reccon that going to lectures is almost completely pointless, unless you're going there for the notes (which you can easily get off sites like this) or trying somehow to kickstart your revision (in which case the lectures are about two or three weeks too late)... it's stupid to think that a seven hour lecture can consolidate the ideas you learnt over one and a half semesters of school, it's impossible to go into enough detail in that time.
They're only really effective for people who haven't paid enough attention in class all year and want to salvage something for the exam (a category which most people on this site don't fall into) and the study tips they tell us all are things we either have already been told over and over again (if I’m told one more time how to interpret the words 'critically examine' I’m going to kill someone), or stuff which we have figured out ourselves.
Just what I think.... and my experience is rather narrow (and yes, I have forked out about $130 this year for lectures... just in case :P)
-
... I feel sufficiently vented.
-
Well for English its good cause u get a different perspective on the texts ur doing. Calm down, you're in year 11 dude.

Yes I completely agree LOL engage is so shit.
Complete waste of time. Methods lecturer was so bad, went so slowly and so many mistakes in the notes.
-

0.o I summarized Chem and Physics under 5 hours. I reckon that if you worked hard enough, you only need a single month to learn the entire Unit 4 for either subject, probably less.
-
Calm down, you're in year 11 dude.
i like to pretend that i'm doing the real vce year... it makes my life seem more important.
-
Yeah, lucky i stayed away from engage (mainly because they started so early and i was disorganised to book)....
I'm not sure if im going to go to a bio one besides VU, anyone else going to any bio ones?
chrisjb, i still reckon the idea of lectures arent all that bad, especially the shorter ones. I myself still haven't finished my revision (shock horror) and the more you constantly revise something and hear it, keep it on the top of your mind, the more you remember it. (according to tsfx (this was backed up by a proper scientific study) you learn more by listening and seeing than by reading/writing your own notes, so unless you're fond of talking to yourself (another tsfx suggestion... people take these too seriously... i know a chick who teaches her pencil case).
3 Hours certainly won't blow a huge hole in your study schedule, for me especially i procrastinate a lot when im at home anyway, which is why i go to the library to study (haven't been lately which explains the little work i got done) time i spent at home would of been semi-procrastinated (im sure this holds true for most people) and you're forced to pick up stuff for a good solid 3 hours.
So, i reckon the shorter lectures are good for resfreshers/helping revision/keeping stuff ontop of your head (or if you had a really shitty teacher... my IT teacher told us no theory all year... just how to do the practical sacs... but we dont do the exam on computer... so its all theory)
Anyway once again - I'm not sure if im going to go to a bio one besides VU, anyone else going to any bio ones?
-
0.o I summarized Chem and Physics under 5 hours. I reckon that if you worked hard enough, you only need a single month to learn the entire Unit 4 for either subject, probably less.
Chem isn't extremely dense on theory (if you haven't noticed already, if you have heineman flick through the book and read the chapters, theres actually not all that much huge chunks of theory... a chapter is what like 30 pages.. some are like 15... compare it to biology with hugely massive chapters and heaps of theory) so i reckon, if you put even a solid week into it, you could get a decent amount of understanding.
-

This, it's a terrible rumour that leaving things till late never works. There is always time :D
I finished off the physics course for midyears the day before exams making up my laziness throughout the year by doing 11 exams the day before the exam, i got a pretty decent mark as well :D
-
This, it's a terrible rumour that leaving things till late never works. There is always time :D
Haha, same.
I get all my best work done in the last minute.
Stress actually motivates me to get off my ass and do something instead of breaking down into a heap like some people, it works well for me cause im lazy half the time
-
Lectures are good for notes (depends on subject) and sometimes hearing things from another person makes some things so much clearer. But I wouldn't shell out too much money for them.
I've only been to a lot because so far I've spent a grand total of $20 for the entire year (and I went to 6 for midyears and planning to go to around ~8 (which would mean an extra $46) for end of year).
Obviously the quality of the lectures I go to are not on the level of DERRICK HA THE SUPERGENIUS/GOD. But I make do.
-
Yeah around 40 bucks or less is what you want to be paying... not like the prices TSFX charges...such a rip off.. how do they manage to get any business
-

Seriously? You did 11 exams in one day? It took me more than 2 weeks to do that 0.o
And for lectures...I have only gone to the one held for KLD (Kwong Lee Dow)/Extension Program students, and English/Physics was a waste of time.
-
lol in chem, there are like 4 chapters you don't even need/ skim over slightly. The chemical waste and all those other chemicals that aren't your study.
-
Whose going to VU chem?
-

Me probably, but 2 hours to get there... then i gotta rush to access chem
Who was at VU biology today?

*puts hand up*
did you like kevin o'leary?
-
Haha yeah he is funny (sometimes) but that chick with the inappropriately long and loud laugh got annoying sometimes when he made a joke.
I went to his midyears and he was ok for that too.
Felt rushed in some parts where he just said the headings of a section and not saying/explaining what was in them but it was ok
How did you find it?
-
i liked it, but i was near the front so i only heard that girl when she laughed really really loud (i didn't even think she was actually finding everything that funny until she kept laughing...)
i liked it, considering my teacher hasn't finished the course yet, so i learned quite a bit about evolution.
and i can't believe VU made him take all the diagrams out of his notes this time...the mid year ones were amazing.
wish he was my teacher.
-
The midyear i recall had a lot of his stuff missing too.
I was sort of in the middle, like three rows from the mini-wall behind that front row of seats.
We also haven't finished haha so i learnt a lot about human evolution too
He makes it seem so simple and condensed down with his notes, he has been an assessor for like 20 years or something which makes him pretty awesome i guess
Going vu chem?
-
wish i was, but because we havent finished the bio course our teacher scheduled a class on that day >.<
but i might skip it. just ot annoy him.
-
Gotta leave home at like 6am to get to VU chem... taking into account all the possible routes where i can get lost
-
Where do you live?
-
S.E suburbs, near the end of the line
-
I live a 30 minutes drive away but due to the fantastic public transport... gonna take 2 hours..you going to any other chem lectures? if you are skip VU i reckon
-
Anyone going VU Methods tomorrow on the Glen Waverley line?
-
Haha how much you bet at least one of us will get lost?
If i dont ge tlost around/ going VU ill definetly get lost going access chem in clayton.. never been anywhere near clayton before ever
-
mother taiga just informed me i am going to access on thursday on chem :X
its good i hear?
-
access are pathetic.
-
:S I shoulda booked another chem one. only going to VU. hope it's worth the total 5 hours travel time...
-
Haha how much you bet at least one of us will get lost?

Haha yeah i reckon. Footscray is so hard to find, monash clayton is easy to find :P
-
access are pathetic.
damn :(
-
You reckon its worth going to VU chem and Access chem or should i just skip VU
-
You reckon its worth going to VU chem and Access chem or should i just skip VU
Only reason i'm not skipping VU is because the lecturer is meant to be superfantasticular good, so don't skip it just incase he is all he's cooked up to be
-
there are freebies and physics VU was goody :)
-
So is the access chem guy:
Christopher Dwyer is a highly respected chemistry educator with over thirty years’ experience in teaching VCE Chemistry at Vermont Secondary College where he formerly served as Year 12 Coordinator and Head of Senior School. He has been a VCE Chemistry Assessor since 1986 and continues in that role. He has co-authored a number of chemistry texts and has delivered revision lectures for VCE students for over 20 years. He has also been involved in the transitional program for VCE Chemistry students preparing themselves for first year Chemistry at Monash University. Chris also teaches Enhancement Chemistry.
I guess it cant hurt but then i cant get much sleeep
-
I think I'm going to access physics tomorrow.

You clearly dont live in the west haha
-
Hopefully theres alot of people going VU chem tmr, so we can just follow the crowd!
-
Haha i think i missed the bus so im going to skip VU unless i get there inappropriately late
-
The lecture was quite good... it took me an hour walking around foots to get there but the notes rock. Everyone started walking out at 1 and made Neale Peters lose concentration. ie. [Neale Peters] decreased

Well clearly if Neale Peters + Teaching <----> Students + Knowledge
Then a decrease in [students] and [knowledge] will force the forward reaction.
Terrible joke. I apoligise profusely.
