Will a 7, 8, 8 scrape me over the line to a 40 by any chance if I'm ranked pretty high in my cohort?
If anyone has gotten a 40(exactly) could you please tell me what marks you got (if you got an SoM)?
-
Three 8s almost always get you a 40. You might get 40 with 7/8/8 if your SAC scores are strong but don't count on it.
-
I got 8,7,6 for prac exam in the middle of the year without remembering half the book haha wtf
I didn't know that 8 8 8 got you over 40 :o wow
-
No no, three 8s will get you 40 or maybe a point or two higher depending on your SAC scores. It could also get you a 39 for the same reason. To get 45 you need three 9s and for 50 three 10s.
Remember that two assessors mark you out of ten, so you actually get a score of 20 for each essay. Thus, it's possible to get say 17/20 which translates to 8.5. Three 8.5s at a guess might get you a 43 or 44.

I don't think it's that black and white... take into consideration cohort strength and how the general body goes according to exam difficulty
-
I mean those scores as ones given by the examiners, not the ones received for SACs.
-
And considering the overwhelming force of exam scores, I don't think SACs have much impact. I did mention it could vary by a few points at most to be safe. My English teacher told me he's only ever seen one case where three 8s got less than 40 (it got 39.)
-
Nah SAC scores to matter to some extent. My friend got 37 with an A+ on end of years (8,8,9 i think?) if she was ranked high this would have gotten her a 40 at least but she flunked sacs and was ranked somewhere in the middle instead.
Also, it has been proven that 9/10/10's or 9.5/9/10's etc can still scrape 50's

Are you sure 8 8 9 isn't even a 40? Pretty sure the sacs would be scaled if it was that low
-
Really weak cohort
-
what would 7/7/7/ get me if i was ranked in the middlde of a medium cohort?
-
Really weak cohort
= mine
frickin gay as, no one in my school will even score a 9 on any of the essays in the exam. bye bye 40
-
i'm not greedy so all i want is a 30+ ? what marks for the essay on the exam do i need?
6/6/6
-
I don't know what would get you 30, but 6/6/6 will definitely score higher than that. I base that off the fact that all 7s gets something like a 36 or 37.
-
Thanks guys. I got a mega weak cohort too :( Devastated lol.

Really???!! That gives me hope. =]
-
The grading report suggests 5.5s would get you a 30.

(Scroll down to exam, look to 'B', divide that by 3)

Actually make that all 5s considering the median (30) was C+.
-
Our school has such a strong cohort fark, it's so hard to score well everyones awesome at english.
-
Actually make that all 5s considering the median (30) was C+.
That's crazy :D
I think i can actually do better than i thought in English now.

WOW thats so cool ! but then again how good is a 5/10 essay?
maybe 5 is like a good essay right?
I kinda have hope but i'm still abit nervous. :(
-
Well, a 5 would be considered 'average' across the state. Hand in some essays to your teacher and ask them to mark it out of 10 as strict as an examiner would.
-
MojoMojo I've given you some bad information. The average score for English last year was a B making a 30 something between 6 and 6.3ish. Sorry for the mistake.
Can someone tell me if I'm right? A C+ is an average of 5 but the median score was a B (6ish.) The median would be what determines a 30 right?
-
6's are easy though, just stick to the prompt, back up with evidence and write with some fluency. Don't worry, you can still get it :D

I think the mean is what determine a 30.

The median was C+ for the exam (GA3). >.<
Which is 29-33, that's around 4.83 to 5.5. =]
-
Whoops, was reading the wrong subject. I was right the first time :)
-
The median was a B last year which is 25? so getting over 40 you'd need high A and A+ I imagine...

nah, to get over 40, you just need a low A+ as A+ for English is top 8%.
-
There have been people with low A+ in exam and still only get mid 30's? You make it sound so predictable.
-
I didn't say A+ meant 40+, I said all 8s almost always means 40+.
I base this off what my teachers have told me. My current one has only ever seen 8s get less than 40 once, and that student got 39.

That's because of the SAC marks.
I was assuming that the SAC marks for both units are A+ too.
