Hi,
I was wanting to go to a library tomorrow and study since i can't at home, but they all close at 5pm which is really annoying ><
But then i saw that according to the opening hours http://www.lib.unimelb.edu.au/collections/opentime.html
Brownless Biomedical Library
"Study Hall (University of Melbourne students/staff only) Mon - Sun 7 am - 2 am
other than Full Service opening time"
Is this for real? Is there actually an everyday study hall?
Since it says only for students, what would happen if i turned up and sat down quietly and started studying, would they ID me or something haha?
Vexx

Don't do it man, it ain't worth it

If you do UMEP chem, I think that makes you a UoM student, so yes?
-

Hahaha, soo worth it. i did zero today!
I won't be going for that long, probably get there around mid-day and stay till later evening - if i go to a library that closes at 5pm, i'll go home and then not study >< needa catch up!
If you do UMEP chem, I think that makes you a UoM student, so yes?
nahhh, there is no UMEP chem, there is only monash.
-
It won't be "open" at that time, the door will be locked and you'll need an authed student card to get in. No idea if you get the as umep students. There's a swipe box by the door for before/after hours entry and exit.
I'd turn up to swipe you in, but no way am I getting up at 6am on Sunday lol
-
If you have a card, then you scan it at the door to go in. Any unimelb card should let you in
-
Ahhh i see, thank you both!
haha russ, i wouldn't get up that early anyway so don't worry ^^;
will the scan of the card only be needed after 5pm? or is it always needed...

After about 6pm and before 8.30am

Just stand at the door and hop in when someone swipes
-
awesomeeeeeeee.
will i be able to find this study area pretty easily when i get to the biomed library?
so basically, its open every single day for these hours? even on the holidays?
amazing!
-
The entire ground floor is a study area (with a strip club theme for some reason)
E, yeah it's always open in holidays

Not everyday, usually not during Public holidays. They will put updates on here:

strip club theme hahaha whaa?
woooooooowwww, so the entire ground floor is super quiet? or not so much, definitely going to go there!
thanks heaps all :)))
-
HOLY SHIT!
this is epic. I may well just join you. I hate studying at my school. i always see people and get distracted, wifi is terrible. they kick you out at around 8pm, and then there was a stupid fire drill once, right when I was studying.
imagine going there for 12 hours a day. You would get so much stuff done. :)
-
Type "brownless brothel" into facebook search if you want to see photos lol.
The ground floor will be deserted in holidays, usually it's pretty noisy. 3rd floor is silent study
Anyway, I have to drop books off tomorrow, might keep an eye out for vce kids lol
-
stonecold- hahah yess 12 hours a day there, that'd be absolutely incredible! i couldn't do it. just going tomorrow to see how it is, may go in a week or so again shall see !
russ- oh my... http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs505.snc3/26546_353535561760_565186760_4193467_4019244_n.jpg that is hahahahahah wow, just wow
so is the silent study area open at night? is there someone there to ensure people are quiet?
-
The whole place is "open" if you can get in. There's nobody there after hours but this is uni...nobody will talk in the silent study area for longer than a few seconds. If they do, tell them they're distracting you. Anyone there is there to study though, since we're on break

Might go in Monday seeing as I have to go into school anyway and bug them for my UNSW application. Gee I am pushing it with that. Stupid manager didn't fill it in completely when I gave it in the first time , so I had to take it back.
-
You can only access the Study Hall after hours. They close off the High Use collections and the other areas which sucks. Came to uni a bit too late last week to get some books but was closed :( Also it is closed on Sundays just in case you decide to turn up then ;)
-
Seriously? That's such a pain, as if they bother to lock the staircase
-
i'm not a umep student, but I study at the biomed library a fair bit.
kinda sux not having a student card though cause sometimes you get kicked out by security after 7pm...
still the belleau library right next to it is open mon-thur till 11pm, and they don't seem to card check there.

it's a pretty cool place, but yeah the student card thing is annoying
but it is also really good because then it is less crowded and can stay open for longer ^_^
will definitely be spending my sundays here for the next few weeks weee.

The Baillieu library is open until 11 so they won't check your ID and it's also one of the most "public" (so to speak) space in uni.
-
me and my friend creeped into the biomed library a few wks back. no one even notices. went exploring the whole thing and acted like uni students :P
if you want to study just go to the state library....

yeppp being a uni student is fun XD
hmm the state library is the worst, not only does it close early but it is rarely ever quiet..
uni libraries are the best by farrrr~

sorry to revive, but I noticed they're extending hours from 8:30-3am next Monday and was considering going for a massive study session but do you think they'll check for ID after 11?
Also, has anyone studied @ RMIT library on Swanston? Was wondering if they check for ID too...
-
Sate library's the bomb. Super fast wlan :D

oh wow until 3 now.. nahh, you dont get checked for ID when you are there 'after hours' so you can stay there until 3am as long as you dont leave, and be fine.
the RMIT library doesn't require any ID, there are librarians there until late (or at least when i was there), and the doors are open to anymore.
-
I think the security comes round every hour, they MIGHT check, not saying they wont ;)
-
wooo sounds awesome thanks vexx

yeah i've seen them come around, they just make sure everything is okay, but haven't checked for the times ive been there :)
-
at the end of the day, they don't really care if you're a university student or not unless you're vandalising the place.
-

Yeah, that's why Edmund sad that security come by once every hour. I know a security guard who kept walking past me once every hour while I was "studying" in the Baillieu Library.
He actually served as a good "time keeper". Every time he walked past, I knew an hour had passed. :P
On the topic of the Biomed library, how do you access the study hall?
-
On the topic of the Biomed library, how do you access the study hall?
Walk in. It's the ugly looking brown building near medicine/microbiology and the first floor is for social study and the top floor for private study.
If you want to get serious, there's also a basement that I swear to god is a remodelled bomb shelter. It's got the bookcases that close to save space and there are big signs saying "check to see if anybody is between shelves before compressing them"

Oh, so the study hall isn't like a separate building? So one of the floors is the biomed student centre and the top floor is the study area? Also, on the topic of the top floor, I find the fake staircase hilarious (if I'm talking about the right building).
So now it's brothel and a bomb shelter? What a combo.
-
Yeah that's the one. Ground floor is general study/social chat, second floor is mdhs center and third floor is a medical library/silent study. The fake staircase is great though, I always wanted to climb it.
It's both because it just matches them so well. Go downstairs, you'll see what I mean.

I went up to the third floor and it looks... pretty small.
I'll go downstairs tomorrow. On my list of things to do tomorrow.

Us engies have 24 hour access to old eng. Three floors of design labs, computer labs, study tables, couches, etc. ;)
Frank Tate is also open late, but you'd probably get ID checked.
-
Can you even get into Frank Tate without a swipe card?
-
You can just walk through the door with somebody else or knock and people will think you lost your card. I don't know anything particular about Frank Tate, though. I've never been there to study. Not my side of the uni haha.
-

If it's 7am and you want to get into Frank Tate/ERC without a card, you can get in through Doug McDonnell building, walk past the lifts, past the girls toilets until you see the guys toilets. Go through the first 2 doors and you will end up in the shower room. Walk right to the other end and there will be a door to your right. Pass through that and you will be in the Frank Tate toilet and walk to the other end again, pass through 2 doors and you will find your self on ground floor Frank Tate! Not sure if the girls toilets are joined up the same way...
-
LOL that's some intense infiltration right there.

It's just a building with a few study rooms in it, so nothing really. I've never been there or the Baillieu to study; there are better places around the joint if you look hard enough. Those two, the ERC and the Brownless take the brunt of the damage for the rest of us. :P

Or you can go through via the ERC Charles Pearson Theatre. You don't need ID.

i went there quite a bit a few weeks ago, but getting there/leaving is far more difficult than the city, and i find being campus on fun at melb uni - plus if i want to study past 12 hehehehe.

haha that's crazy! is it a good place to study? does one need a uni card?

Don't think it's really worth studying there 24 hours a day. I mean if you need that much cram time then you're doing something wrong.
It's an okay place to study, not many individual learning areas but it has some great group facilities

hahaha no, no of course i didn't mean that >< just awesome that it's open all the time is all.
perhaps may check it out then!

Oh I just meant generally. Drop by, it's open during the day, not sure when it changes to keycard access.
I spend most of my breaks there talking/playing study games so it's a decent place to go

It pretty much changes to keycard access when it's past or before "opening hours" (when it's not staffed I believe). Apparently to get out you need to press the button.
