Domestic students must only seek entry to Monash University courses offered at campuses in Australia. Under the Monash University agreement with the Commonwealth of Australia, the University only has CSP places available at campuses in Australia.

So I think you'd be classified as international since you won't get a CSP place... also there is no VTAC code for it...

Maybe email them to make sure.

And I heard its extremely competitive over there anyway.

You always have graduate medicine, don't give up hope too soon!

But you're already competing against other students who want to do undergraduate medicine - how does it seem even more impossible or any different for that matter if you're truly determined to go for medicine and give it your best shot at it?

And also, keep in mind that there are plenty more places and options once you're in grad med. It's so much more flexible. You can always do your preferred degree next year and apply for non-standard entry into the same courses next year.
My friend did not score high enough on the UMAT for medicine in year 12. He ended up getting into pharmacy, and tried for the UMAT again in first year uni. It took him a whole three tries before he got high enough for an interview but he was over the moon once he got in. If he failed again, he'd have a chance at grad med the year after or he'd have a career in pharmacy ready to go. It was a win-win-win so to speak

Point is, this is only a small hurdle in the path to becoming a doctor, it is by no means the end, not even close. You can pretty much try out for medicine every year after this one.
Think about it in this perspective, remember all those 40 year olds at the UMAT test centre? they're in your exact position now except you've got a twenty year headstart. This one measly year is nothing in the grand scheme of things

Thanks crayola =]

but in this website http://www.monash.edu.au/study/schools/careers-groups/aug06.pdf
it says:   "ISAT for selection into Medicine (MBBS) for international students All international students will be required to undertake the International Student Admissions Test (ISAT) in order to be considered for the Monash MBBS course (Clayton and Malaysia)."

Before you apply for this, you'll want to find out what it means for your ability to get an internship position after you graduate. If you do your degree in Malaysia, I have no idea how they'll class you (international student, foreign med graduate or domestic student) which means you may be unable to get a spot when you come back to Australia.

omg i sent them an email for Monash at sunway campus and they say

"Because you are a domestic student you cannot study at Monash University Malaysia. You will have to apply for an Australian campus."

I though we could apply for any monash campus - even South africa.. :S

Dont do that course. THe lecturers and teachers there are really shit even though they are Monash, they are a completely lower ranked program. You'd rather go fro graduate med then go there or even go interstate

I've spoken to my doctor who studied overseas. You will have a series of tests to complete to show you adhere to Australian medical standards.

What do people think of admission to the University of Adelaide? Is it harder or easier in comparison to admission to Monash?

Much easier.

How much easier, what kind of ATAR rank do you know successful applicants have achieved?

Also, would I be able to do my internship in Victoria if I studied there?

Many I know that didn't get into Monash got into Adelaide - myself included initially. The ATAR is a bit irrelevant in Med from what I've seen and usually isn't the deciding factor, but it just happens that the people I know would've got 95+ or so. Checking the medstudentsonline forum is probably a better place to ask about the thresholds for the ATAR. And yeh, you should be able to do your internship in Victoria so long as you get in. I'm not sure if there's any preference that goes on in regards to states choosing students from their own universities though.

Yeah there is, you go behind the students who graduated from universities in the state you're applying for (but ahead of full fee students if you're CSP). The AMSA was up in arms about it, I read an article in my uni student newspaper today discussing the internship situation

Sorry Russ, I don't quite get what you said? A bit too much technical jargon.

What do you mean competition for internship, surely everybody gets an internship?

Used to be the case.

Haven't checked recently, but the Victorian government guaranteed internship positions for all medicine graduates until the end of 2012. Obviously, if you start a degree now that won't include you and given that the amount of medicine graduates is increasing faster than the amount of intern positions is...

JESUS CHRIST,

If I study Medicine for 5 years and am not offered an internship...

Shit will explode.

On the upside, there's a lot of pressure on the government to guarantee further into the future, since it's obviously a lose-lose situation for everyone.

edit: I just dug out the article (farrago page 8 if anyone has it) and it focuses mainly on international students applying for interstate positions. I assume it's the same for domestic students but the article doesn't explicitly mention it

Honestly think everyone will get internships etc for a very long time...

CSP students at least. International is another story.

Regardless, this is a problem that really needs to be addressed, the public health system is in a bad enough state as it is.

Yeh it's not going to affect us anytime soon, but the internationals are starting to lose out. Interstaters are the next to go apparently, but that should be a while, and hopefully the government intervenes before then.
