Hey Guys
kinda a weird question but...
Was just wondering, does anyone have any specific pens or techniques that their school uses when writting? I'm finding that particularly in Revs, and English, that by the time you get to the end of writting time that your hand has become so cramped that its hard to write/write clearly.
Anyone have any ideas on the best pens to use to that allow you to maximise what you can get out of it? I know that biros arn't the best idea, and also heard of asking for a script book straight away to write on to thicken the pages......
-
Good question :)
I tend to bring 3+ different pens into a SAC/exam, swapping between pens reduces cramping. Some techniques I use to reduce cramping in my hand (from gaming/typing/writing) is to simply grab my fingers, make my palm face the ceiling and pull my fingers down to make a L shape and just stretch my fingers/massage them.
-
LOL I like the instructions
-
LOL. Thanks buddy, there isn't a specific name for it so I though instructions were necessary :D
-
Differs for just about everyone, I use blue biros exclusively (the cheap officeworks ones that cost $5 for a pack of 20)
-
I've always used those white papermate kilometrico ones. But yeah they hurt after writing a 3 hour english exam...
-
Haven't you guys experimented with writing with different grips/styles of pens? I tend to use my 4pen (Blue bottom half/white top half) which has a fat grip then I switch to a smaller gripped pen like those thin white papermate kilometrico ones.. It really works for me; I'm sure it would work for other people too.
-
I only like the 4pen because you can do the magnetic trick :D
-
I use this pen with a rubber grip stolen from cheapo BIC pacers put on the front. Remains as my favourite pen since year 12. It's definitely the most comfortable so far for me since it's not overly fat like the 4 pens (I hate writing with them), but not too thin like the kilometrico biros which also ends up hurting since your hand gets scrunched up around it. In terms of the hand cramping, I hold a pen terribly (failed my pen license when I was younger - just about the only test I've ever failed =/) so I get that pretty quickly. I find that a combination of the speed of writing, length of time you're writing for and the anxiety causing you to grip your pen harder than usual in an exam leads to this and there's not much you can do. Just tank it out was what I did =/ Stretching your hands makes it feel better but it comes back almost immediately after you start writing so it's just a waste of time IMO. You won't notice it as much under time pressure anyway. You'll be too busy writing.
EDIT: The grips were from these: BiC Velocity pacers.
-
get a pen that writes smoothly ... and that probably has to do with the ballpoint thickness
i have a parker pen for a few years now... and the weight is heavy on the bottom of the pen and i think that actually makes it easier to write... because those plastic light weight ones actually means you have to use more force i think... oh god im horrible at the mechanistic explanations of how a pen works lol
like this one
-
Probably needa hit officeworks soon and get a bunch that are recommended on here, then test them out before exam comes
What pens do you not have to press down hard on and doesn't smudge? i tried fineliners but they smudge bad and leak through
-
I hate the 4pen's fatness too, but i was just giving an example :P
I love papermate's pens.. They own by default.
http://papermate.com/Pages/products.aspx
P.S Someone PM me on how to hyperlink things?
-
i use the finest biro i can get, and thats usually the cheap bic ones like a box for a few bucks, I hate using the fourpen. sooooo fat.
-
I'm an idiot, next post

This has been my baby since Year 7;

LOL Hutchoo, cramps in hands from gaming :P Dota?
-
Ty Russ :)
On-topic:
I use the 'pen style' pencil's.. I hate the wooden ones :S The sound when you're writing gives me shivers.
@Andiio, ROFL Yeah :P Microing with meepo can be pain in the ass :'(
-
..Oh god, tab tab tab tabt abtab btabtabtabtbatbababbta spam poof :P
On a more serious note, I don't really have a 'designated' or favourite pen; I find that as long as it isn't TOO thin or TOO fat, it works just fine. :) But I SHOULD probably go around Officeworks and get a specially tailored pen. :D
-
I always use uniballs. Soooo gooooood~
-
do some marathon hand writing training. 4 hours non stop whilst watching a movie or two will do it (y)
-
since we're into the topic of using pens, I'm just wondering if holding your pen low is a bad habit?
I noticed this habit recently and my mum keeps telling me to shift my grip on the pen so that it can be held "correctly".
Is it something common or just a bad habit? :(
-

I do it too. It's a bad habit but I can't write legibly otherwise. Makes me real prone to handcramps though =/
-
I have a scrunch hand grip, unfortunately it can never change. despite those crummy rubber triangular grips they force on you.
I love the kilometrics, they write smoothly, and the coles brand pens are surprisingly good and nice to write with.
Love using the atlantic pens though, find they are 'not to thick not to thin'.
-

Same ;]
But $17 for a 4 pack :buck2:
-
Don't uniballs smudge? and run out of ink really quick
-
yes that one above is horrible and smudges

I hate those pens, smudging is the biggest pain in the ass.

ahh yes, the proneness to hand cramping is my major concern :( but then again neat writing shouldn't even be thought about in the actual English exam (but sadly I am a writing-neat-freak)

Completely agree ,especially if you're a left hander, drives you nuts, and the side of your palm is permamentely tattooed with blue ink.
-
My english exam papers are chicken stratch, I get everything down, but I feel for the examiners eyes.
-
I've always been worried about my handwriting, my teacher complains that she can't read it, but it seems very readable for me :'(
I think she hates me :'(
-
as a lefty, i opt for something not gel. something like a kilometrico but with grip. bic velocity type thing. i also prefer clicky pens that have got the right amount of length to do pen tricks with.
my handwriting is putrid too, i feel for examiners, and its honestly one of my biggest worries, but after getting a decent score for revs last year i know that it cant be too bad :\
-
I absolutely hate using ink/gel pens they smudge too much.

omg i thought i was the only on who uses these pens (no grip though). love them. they dont smudge and write smooth. :)
except only Officeworks sells them :/
-
Well... my ultimate pen is the OfficeMax 1.0 mm non slip grip blue ball point pen. You have probably seen them around, but they're actualy prety hard to buy. I managed to scab about a hundred of them off one of my mates (his dad works in an office somewhere where they use them and he got some for me :))
... I drool when I see them.
EDIT NOTE: wrote 0.7 instead of 1.0
-
Never even heard of them :s
Pictures?

*I am currently experiencing uncontrolable spazms of joy*

Well I work at a Newsagency, and I'm a lefty, and there was basically no one around last Saturday due to the Grand Final, so I thought I may as well test every pen...
To my dismay, not one pen doesn't smudge for a lefty, even the "non-smudge" pens
I FEEL FOR FELLOW LEFTY'S....
-
@all Lefty's, L2RIGHTHAND.
-
I use pilot supergrip <F> its the closest pen that I can get that has good grip and feels like im writing with a pacer. too bad they cost $3.50 each and run out around 10 essays (1000 wordish essays).
-
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Pilot Ballpoint BPS-GP pens yet. I always buy a set for exams and they're the smoothest pens I've ever tried.
They will blow your mind. Always get the 1.0 (Medium Point) one though. The other one writes too too thin .. unless you're into that sorta stuff.
-
awesomeness
^these are erasable pens, they make me happy :)

The colour of those actual pens are fuddgin' disgusting, they look like watered down ink.
No offence, bro.
-
yeah, but it's not so much the colour, that I'm concerned about. I really like having the abilty to erase any mistakes.
-
Invest in a heavy pen, like a Parker or a Mont Blanc. The latter is expensive, but the former can be bought from Officeworks for $10. You won't cramp because you won't need to press as hard and it feels nice lol.
-
(http://www.tigerpens.co.uk/acatalog/Pilot-Hi-Tecpoint-V7-Grip.jpg)
I didn't read 4 pages but unless someone suggested an executive pen, I can safely say that all of your suggestions are nothing compared to the Pilot Hi-Tecpoint Grip V7, the king of disposable pens.
The perfect exam pen, writes as smooth as a fountain pen, doesn't smudge, no cramps and has great colour.
If you disagree, I will fight you and win.
It's a good pen lol, but you need dry ink for exams.
-
I heard that these pens are relatively cheap ;)

VCAA douches might seize it off you, although there is no rule on what type of pen you can bring.

they would be like 'wtf is that'
-
If you are a lefty learn to be a righty.
Easier said than done haha
-

LOL that looks like some cheating device ahahah.
But anywho, does anybody agree with me on the fact that the Blue colour of the 4 Colour pens (The BIC fat ones with the magnetic trick) is soooooo light and bad? -_-
-
They are good for multipurpose things, for example.. I only use them for maths so I don't get confused with adding in variables etc.

no wonder Mont Blanc is freakin expensive its gold or silver and hand crafted lol
just get a pen that works
gold belongs on a person not a pen!
although im sure they are good pens
ill just stick with my Parker pen
-
I won a pen from the herald sun the other day. They described it as a 'parker sonnet ball pen'. I'm thinking of using that in my exams if it's any good.
-
I found one that really works well, I suggest you all buy one and give it all a try:
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/MONTBLANC-PEN-ROMANCING-HEARTS-LIMITED-EDITION-14-/200523501325?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2eb021cf0d
Naah but seriously, you can get a Parker Jotter for <$10, I may have to invest...
-
Only 99,000? Bro, that only tickles my wallet.
>1million otherwise nty
P.S
What do the writing of parker pens look like? Someone scan one plx?

Hahaha well buy me one then if it doesn't dent your wallet
Ummm they look pretty good, compared to other pens, will just have to work out if it smudges or not...

Oh did you get letter of the day or something?
-
yeah, my teacher marked me down on a letter we had to write in class, so I made it my mission to get one published to prove her wrong.
EDIT: post 100 btw.
-
I got a decent Gold Parker that was $100 but got it on eBay for $20. Works well and you don't need to press to hard.

BIC CLASSIC FINE
ive been using it all year
smoothest pen.
I used to use a heavier nicer class Shaeffer pen. but honestly ... you can get 10 of these bic classic fine pens for like 4 bucks at officeworks and they are the smoothest bestest thing evar. :)
-
What pen does the principal's daughter use? :P
I'm going pen shopping today.
Woot
-
Papermate pens are the only ones I ever use! So smooth :)
-
i prefer using an old school one with a feather on top which i dip into a tub of ink
-
My best 'pens' are my fingers with blood for ink. :)
-
This thread made me buy a Pilot dr grip shaker pacer off ebay :(
Good work guys.

-
I find any pen with dark blue dry ink and a pen nib of 0.5-0.7 mm acceptable =D Bic four pens are bleghhhh.. thinking of taking in an "erasable" pen into the methods exams ;) Are they allowed? :/ lool
-
They're a pen, why wouldn't they be allowed?
I just got some dry ink pens, sick of smudging.

JOLLY PENS FTW

I like skinny pens with smooth writing texture.
-
That's a helluva revival.

Good work guys.
This thread made me buy a Pilot erasable pen - WHICH RAN OUT DURING MY ENGLISH EXAM (lucky i had brought a spare pen)
IT DOESNT EVEN RUB OUT GOOD
-
Let's not get this thread up and going againnnnnnnnnnnn.
-
inb4 locked.
Also, those BIC pens which everyone has are great (i posted a link a while ago).
-
Those massive packs of papermate kilometrico pens are awesome.
Something like $1 for a pack of blues, blacks and reds galore. :)
-
awesomeness
^these are erasable pens, they make me happy :)
I wouldn't use that pen in exams or SACs because the ink disappears if you expose it to heat and the ink reappears if you expose it to extreme coldness. You wouldn't want the examiner and teacher wondering why your essay is disappearing when they're marking on a hot summers day.
As for pen recommendations, just use one that is comfortable and most importantly WORKS!
-
I have the Answer, see below
-
(http://content.etilize.com/Large/11961066.jpg)
BIC's finest pen, hand-crafted with its' unique oblong shape and perfectly placed grip with an amazing texture. Gently, your hands caresses the pen, for something could not be so delicate, soft and invincible. As you raise the pen like it is an animated lion cub, the sunlight gilds the edge of it, and the engraved words "BIC Atlantis" gleam wetly in your gentle grasp.
You cannot resist it in anymore, you must have intercourse with the pen. You tear off its' lid and begin to write.
The ink does not just come out, it rolls out, hugging the paper with such love that your hands glide motionless as you write. No, let me correct myself. You do not simply "write" with the BIC Atlantis, you weave together a fable, a legend.
When the examiner opens your exam-paper, he shields his eyes momentarily, for he has not seen such divine beauty, ever. The perpetual dark blue glow of the ink leaves him awe-inspired. He deeply gazes at each word you've crafted, torrents of water flow from his eyes for he has never felt such a surreal experience. The tears soak the paper, but the ink remains, it is not simply living on the paper, it is married to it. The moment you began crafting your fable, the ink and paper exchanged vows, 'till death to us part'.
This is not simply a pen, it is a reason to write.
So yea... this is why you should buy this pen. It made me the man I am today.
-
just went through the whole thread...
gotta go shopping nows ~
-
I'm not to fussed. Just use a pacer and a typical Kilometrico black and red pen.
Although I write my names on my textbooks with a Parker...
-
on the topic of pens, this is the first year I haven't had to buy new pens for school. They're all left over from last year still :D

If it wasn't so long it would be worthy for someone to use on their signature for the forum :P
Pen wise the four pens I found were okay but not too great if you needed to write for a long period of time due to them being a bit harder to write with.
However, most people prefer different pens. Some like those that write darker whereas others don't. Although, with all the help on this thread with suggestions if one pen fails you there will be plenty left to try out xD.
-
Hmmm so you want something thats easy to write and doesn't hurt your fingers...
(http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTAe4_QqNQZdIrKaNs-8Tm1J5c0Le6eOtxmWDtQt8EzhrdAgHpg) + (http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTcmcA6EWXKwA7i1cIkROgYngJL80VHg-KwUfGUTnSAXNylvvt7)
one of those thin grips + plus a bic pen = funny look, but works :)
(http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSf_00PxYsvyoElZuI_7U0v35tDJy_km96IbqbSQYLM-7O8Nv7ayA)+ (http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTBFxJTxd4JY_zDhGpONyJ0M-7VIuUZawIQVWmdn-rQpME-QlpdAA)
for pacers:
need to use these more elastic grips because pentel pacers are thicker,
and the 0.5 Pentel pacers are much better than the 0.7/0.9 BIC pacers
btw.... any grip that looks like this hurt.. especially this one (why is the rubber so hard?)

For pencils I like Pentel pacers, including those Techniclick ones or this Sharplet one:

A Parker "Jotter" will last you more than a year. Also, the weight and design is optimal for speed writing, from the precision of the strokes. The neatness of your writing will increase tenfold.

Where can i get parker jotters for less than $10 ? or very cheaply/
They are generally around $20, but you can easily find them at local newsagents or Kmart and even on Ebay. Excellent choice though.

eBay, always purchase from OS though as our pens are very expensive in Aus
I got 7 Blue Jotters for $10 including postage...
-
I previously said; any local newsagent or large-chain retail stores (Kmart, Target...)

I'm just going to stop here. And you will have to look hard if you want a Parker Jotter for under $15.

I am Asian.

$5 can make a big difference for different people...
If so, you really shouldn't be buying luxury pens over the $1.50 for a pack of 10 ballpoints

I have to agree with this.

Considering I ran through a pen every fortnight and I seriously have OCD, I had to use the same pen and I believed using a different pen would jinx me and make me do bad, so it was the typical BIC pen for me. They're seriously fine >_>

Hey Guys
kinda a weird question but...
I know that biros arn't the best idea, and also heard of asking for a script book straight away to write on to thicken the pages......
lol

lol
Every bit of organisation counts in the end!
