Title: Subject Score of 20
Post by: t3nsai on October 02, 2010, 10:49:45 pm
Well I've dug myself a very very deep hole in Japanese since year 11, and as a result, I am unable to climb out of it.
I believe I will be very nervous in orals (oh god it's going to be 15 minutes of awkward silence), and will die in the exams (I know i will die in the lsitening haha).
I don't know if I can pass but if I can fluke an E or D or C will that get me a 20 :D?

edit: and no im not a tensai XD

D-D+ = 20ish study score.

that seems doable :S is that like 50% of the exam>?

I think C+ is ~50%

Just to make you feel better, a 50% exam score in Japanese SL (across written and speaking) is like a B+, because everyone fails at the written (particularly listening). This was 175-219/400 in 2009, so you could actually get 175/400 and get a B+, for some strange reason.

Low grades in LOTEs seem to damage your study score a bit more than other subjects though...

i actually do feel at ease now :D i'll aim for a C+(or B and try get 33 somehow but most likely 20-30 x))

LOL i didn't really touch the red text book and know all my grammar. I guess you should use alot of grammar to get use to it.. and orals are fun :) you go in and the next second, you are out. (Semester 1, I pretty much gave up then my awesome teacher forced me to go to her "afternoon tuesdays" to work on orals and listening and random grammar. While I didn't really improve much in listening or got any grammar down into my head, I did grew confidence in orals)

and don't play dota/games 8D

Is there any supplementary texts that you would suggest?
And what dictionary do you think is the best??
Title: Re: Subject Score of 20
Post by: t3nsai on December 14, 2010, 12:07:40 pm
LOL use the text books.. I was too lazy to do the work XD and hence I had limited vocabulary and grammar in my head (which probably affected my listening skills) and I did Kyuushoku for my detailed studies. Orals isn't hard :D practice heaps and in the oral exam, time flies very quick.

Oohhhh did they ask and difficult questions about Kyuushoku??

What are some good detailed study topics??
Title: Re: Subject Score of 20

Everyone in my class has to do Onsen as their Detailed Study, it's been like that for the past 382901839210 years at my school :(

My school uses that Kodansha Furigana Japanese Dictionary if you were curious~
Does every school use the red kookoo seikatsu book? do you guys use anything else? Our teacher makes us have weekly vocab quizzes based on the "Lets go Tango!" book

*edit*

not to mention that we finished that purple Kanji book in yr 11

@ Furbob:
Yeah we use the red workbook as well, the dictionary we use in the oxford beginners jap. dictionary.
We finished the purple kanji book as well. It sucks that you all have to do the same detailed study... (well it does imo)

I think Kyuushoku is the easiest detailed study and a lot of people do it. So unless you wanna stand out, pick a different detailed study :D?

Regarding dictionary, I used the oxford from year 8-10, then the fat green jisho for vce.

don't be like me and not touch the purple kanji book. my kanji book is like half brand new XD. Same goes for the red text book! lol I don't know why I said that since who on atarnotesforums would do what I did.

hehe my kanji book is pretty much complete, except i havent ddone all those exercises at the back :/ are those worth doing?

i havent bought my red book yet. but im starting to write up a book where i put all the kanji, grammar points, vocab etc hoppefully that will help
Title: Re: Subject Score of 20
Post by: Furbob on December 16, 2010, 02:51:43 pm
nice nice, I finished the purple book all during the term 2 holidays this year to move onto more (non-VCE) kanji because im a nerd like that :P The exercises at the back are good in case you are paranoid about forgetting the kanji - but if you're confident with them then it's no biggie

Shizzas have you memorised all the VCE kanji??? becoz i havent even started to try yet.
Title: Re: Subject Score of 20
Post by: Furbob on December 16, 2010, 04:31:00 pm
I never had a problem with kanji, 150 + 50 for recognition isn't that many imo

speaking of kanji, when I did the MUEP placement test I noticed in the kanji quiz that there were kanji that were not on the VCE list such as 終わる (おわる) but luckily I was prepared for any kanji really :P

I've personally made a "kanji poster" myself and have stuck it on my toilet door, you should try it LOL

Hmm poster idea sounds good :) How big did was it? Like how big did you write the kanji?

Also do relative clauses come up much in VCE jap?
Title: Re: Subject Score of 20
Post by: Furbob on December 16, 2010, 07:44:17 pm
I categorized my kanji poster into "family" (eg. 母、父、兄) "te-hen particles" (eg. 押、持、撮) and so on with different colours 'cause im a girl and I like colours in all of my work :P

The kanji on my poster are slightly bigger than my thumb but the main point is that it needs to be big enough to see

If you just plan to fit the VCE kanji then you can make them much bigger since I crammed A LOT (500-ish) on my poster.

Post by: Greatness on December 16, 2010, 09:07:50 pm
Whoa dedication right there :) I will definitely remember the 200 VCE ones, is it really beneficial to learn any other ones? Because they can only put VCE kanji in exams right?

I shall make a poster when im done with my jap homework :@ Hopeful to get it done tonight or by tomorrow :)

What study score are you aiming to achieve?
Title: Re: Subject Score of 20
Post by: Furbob on December 16, 2010, 10:20:27 pm
LOL what a good pupil.

benefits of learning kanji = impress teachers/examiners, save some space in the genkoyooshi paper
eg. しゅくだい -> 宿題 and いっしょに -> 一緒に and you may find reading some passages much quicker if you can recognise the kanji

it saves quite a few squares = more to write! and lastly I want to continue Japanese after year 12 so learning Kanji now is a personal benefit :)

Assuming that I will do MUEP Jap next year along with the 3/4, I'm aiming pretty high

I have to admit that I bursted out laughing when I read the name of the girl who scored a 50 raw in Jap SL - "Diva Baggio" :D

Ohhk yeah i see. Uni Jap would help heaps with VCE jap :)

how many students get a 50 for jap most years??

But they are a great contribution to your ATAR if you're half decent at it.... My teacher is predicting most of us to get 30+ atm!!! yay :) she reckons a chinese chick in our class is a high chance of 45+ :'( i want taht score...
How would i beat this girl in sacs next year so i can obtain rank 1? Because all this year i would lose 1 mark ie get 19/20 because her essays or SAC is more in depth than mine, even though i make no mistakes etc.??
It's so stupid that my teahcer does the whole bell curve thing with sacs...
Title: Re: Subject Score of 20
Post by: Tobias Funke on December 19, 2010, 02:31:58 pm
It's not stupid, if she's better than you, then she obviously deserves Rank 1, maybe just hope she gets ahead of herself or something, but really, yeah.

I wonder how hard a 40 raw is.
Title: Re: Subject Score of 20
Post by: Greatness on December 19, 2010, 02:42:53 pm
Hmm yeah i understand what you're saying.
Im guessing 40+ will be very hard? My teacher said that i would have to work very hard in order to achieve a study score above 40.
Title: Re: Subject Score of 20

My friend who was in year 12 this year got 42 raw in Jap SL although she is asian and did get 40+ raw in Chinese in yr 11 :(

but my point is that she was given the same material and had the same teacher so I guess its how much she practiced essay writing - and she did get a tutor near exam time for the oral
Title: Re: Subject Score of 20
Post by: Greatness on December 19, 2010, 07:08:30 pm
Well ive heard that you can get 50% in your exams and get a 30ish study score. Im assuming you would hhave to do okay in the oral exam and have a decent ranking/sac marks...
