I still have no clue about the Melbourne Model...
... but I applied for the old Computer Science course (not the Melbourne Model science one) so I guess it doesn't apply to me :P
I think Computer Science is the only non-Melbourne Model degree left?

Post by: Eriny on November 07, 2007, 04:18:08 pm
lol. All the Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars were sent this lapel pin with the University of Melbourne logo, apparently we are to wear it with pride or something. Some people got sent an empty box!

As weird as Melbourne is getting, the reality is that it's a good university and a prestigious institution and (whether the prestige is real or imagined) that will continue to attract high achieving students. Although, I don't know what they were thinking, getting rid of undergrad law.

Does anyone find it amusing that all the people accusing UoM and the Melbourne Model as being terrible are students there? I'm of the attitude that if it's so terrible then don't go, but I suspect the job prospects associated with staying would be somewhat irresistable. I do think that there should have been more consultation with the students before the plans were enacted though.

It will be difficult to tell whether the Melbourne Model will be good or not until the first few years graduate. It's weird to think that this year level will be among the first Melbourne Model graduates.

Next year's the guinea pig year.

Monash's undergraduate law clearly-in is gonna sky rocket... 99 --> 99.55 or something... I wouldn't be surprised if it was higher.

The competition to get into undergrad medicine/surgery at Monash might also (most likely) increase the year following next as well. Due to this year's group being the last ones accepted into UoM's. That's ~200 flocking to other unis for med.

LOL empty box? ...

Remember the up-roar with the introduction of GST?
Now everyone just accepts it.

I agree with Eriny.
Besides, its not about what we think is the 'best'... its about Melbourne Law and Medicine etc having a globally recognised standard, and all of the employment opportunities you get as a graduate of tUoM.
:P
I think the risk and change of the Melb model will attract just as many students. They seem to think its a great leap forward (lol@revs imo?), so surely there must be other faculties/corporations that agree.

I think its going to turn out great

:P Granted, different Unis are different at different things (can you say different 3 times in one sentence? /sigh) but im talking about in general, rather than specialisation.
Well, i for one have Melb uni as my top 4 preferences lol , (csp/ffp),  and i will be really dissapointed if i miss out on the opportunity.

I am proud of my double degree Engineering/Commerce, and I would not have studied either of them alone.

If I had to choose now, though, I would take Commerce.

its not amusing at all. it would only be so if it was people who plan to be students at UoM. My course is affected, because they are gradually phasing out the subjects, and i have to do the subjects in the last year they are offered. so if you fail, its not like you can repeat the subject.

It's true that that's irresponsible of the people making the changes and I do think you have a right to feel outrages about it (particularly the Creative Arts students as well, so I hear). I just meant that it was kind of funny how on open day the student union (actually, it may have been some other UoM organisation, I didn't really check) had all these tables and handed out pamphletes saying "don't come here, UoM sucks!!!"

The student union's full of crap anyway.

What's new?

-back on topic-

Introducing "new" degree courses will probably devalue the degrees themselves in the short run; change is generally not well accepted... you had the unimelb BCom as a benchmark and now... a new BCom... how good are these graduates compared to the old BCom graduates? etc etc... Monash's clearly-ins are probably going to rise this year.

I'm fairly certain that those two preferences only allow/disallow HTML and BBCode in your posts.

HTML was disabled system-wide by enwiabe (for posting), to fix the quote issue.

No, you can't block URLs. You can simply scroll down and ignore it if you don't like it, like you would when you see someone making meaningless posts.
