Title: Max word limit above 250?
Post by: Andiio on October 30, 2010, 10:46:40 pm
What is the maximum amount of words you can have above 250?

I heard that it was 10% of 250 + 250 = 275?

I usually stick to the iron rule of 260 though :/

I remember the teacher telling me that they're removing that leeway this year.

Which leeway are they removing? The +10% one, or the 260 words one?

Just try as best you can to stick with 250. I don't know if my teacher is 100% correct or not, but for the sake of the exam, better safe than sorry.

Yeah true. Don't think it'd matter if you were a few words over 250 though, e.g. 254, 256 etc.

Are you doing 3/4 Chink this year brightsky?

I think they don't mind if you're, say, 3 or 4 words over as the examiners ARE quite flexible. Guess it just comes down to how lucky you are - if you get a tight examiner = gg.

As far as I know they don't count per se, they just draw a line after the 4th/5th line of the second page depending on how much blank space and punctuation you have, and if it's a magazine or newspaper article then they draw it lower at around line 5 or 6

But if they have a suspicion that you may have gone over, they start counting apparently - and they'll know, considering the sheer amount of essays that they've marked.

Another related question:

Does the structure parts of the essay count?

eg. For newsletter report or something, are the newsletter name, date and newsletter edition counted?

Yeah that's true I guess, but my teacher said they only spend 4 minutes marking each paper and won't have time to count the words in your essay. If they get suspicious, they'll just deduct marks so it's probably best to not go over 4 lines

Structure does count, so does the date apparently...

The necessities for any specific text type (e.g. new article, etc.) are counted as one word.
