Hiii,
How did everyone do?
What questions did people find challenging, anyone want to clarify stuffff?
My minds gone blank, so i'll have probs some things to ask later :)
Did essay Q12 and wrote five full pages ahha hope it goes down okay..
what about you guys? what exams/whatd you write away?
Vexxxxxxx
Ps, yeah second englang thread to be made, but the other was comparing to english, so ENGLANG only here :)
-
Woooo Q11 ;D
I spent 1 hour with 5 pages
-
question 13 had alot of points to discuss about~~~did that..but ran out of time in the end only wrote 3 pages sniffT.T had so much good points i could discuss damit
-
sighs~~~
vexx wrote 5 pages...
me 2 == 3pages, ran out of time....hate the essay bit SO BAD ...
intro+2 paragraphs and an ordinary conclusion
OMG...
DEAD
-
So incredibly lucky that I'd mem'd the change question... extra script book much?
-
LMFAO the essay topic (first one) almost the same as what I wrote for you guys to mark in the ENgLang thread (well the ideas are similar)!! Wrote almost all pages and 1/4 of last page.. in 55 mins
Wtf was last question of spoken? Had no idea how to answer (besides saying went from phatic interaction to transactional). Were we supposed to mention sentence structure, types or what? Had no time
Also what features did you guys get that represents formal in Part 2 of Text 1?
-
RAN OUT OF TIME!
so annoyed ... i finished my essay but didn't write enough to even get half marks on the last two questions of the spoken section.
shattered :(
-
tell me it was a pun?
but overall...think i did okay. filled the script book. not sure how good the essay was though.
did Q11.
overall was a decent exam. 40 may be possible, but I'm not getting my hopes up :P
-
l i said it was an overstatement/ hyperbole!! omfg ........great
-
tell me it was a pun?
i said pun too! yay :D hopefully we are right
-
It's a pun, play on the word 'take off' being planes departing
-
What was a pun? Confused (As in what question)
Ooooh... that one... my brain died and i wrote metaphor, it was the closest thing i could think of(still didnt fit but i forgot to go back to it... i think that Q was only 2 marks anyway)... totally forgot about pun
I did 13, i like the political language/ language used to influence people kind of thing, so worked out for me :D
Thank god there were 3 choices this year also...
Overall pretty easy/standard exam i reckon
-
I did 11
talked about technology, multiculturalism and PC movement (and doublespeak)
-
I did 11

i did exactly the same minus doublespeak :)
-

sammeee minus doublespeak lol...
-
It's a pun, play on the word 'take off' being planes departing
In that case we all concur, it was a pun. yay, 2 marks in the bank. Only need 58 more now :P
-
hopefully i get sum mark for saying it's hyperbole T________T aim for a 36~~hopefully its not as bad as think
-

Also polysemy, or metaphor fa shiz
-
To be honest I made shit up for most of the questions (wrote adjacency pair, overlapping at least 5 times) and the last question about syntax I had no idea how to answer. What did people get/
-
I bullshitted my way through the syntax one majorly...
-
I talked about declarative and interrogative stuff.... but thats one of the questions i didn't finish so i wont even get half the marks for it!
-

Oh god I hope you are right about metaphor.. That's what I put
-
To be honest I made shit up for most of the questions (wrote adjacency pair, overlapping at least 5 times) and the last question about syntax I had no idea how to answer. What did people get/
I hated the first question on spoken. There was soo much bull shit to discuss. Think I screwed it.
For syntax, the second lot had ellipsis. Also the first lot had some interrogatives. Spoke about tense. Anything I could think of really. Might have thrown in parataxis as well....
-
I also got metaphor but it didnt really "feel" like a metaphor to me...but i needed to write something down
-

Judging by his SS, he will be :P
I think the idea is like a metaphor for the plane...is what you guys mean yeah?

sh*t! Totally forgot about ellipsis but instead said something about simple sentence for the thank-yous. LMAO :( :(
-
OMG didn't even mention ellipsis once.. FUCK easiest feature
-
Look if they didn't accept metaphor they'd be pretty tight, given that a pun is based in metaphorical extension. ;)
-
What did you guys write for features to show that Part 2 was formal? I think I wrote use of jargon and passive voice but dunno the last one
-

I commented on sentence type, sentence structure as the second part was all simple and the first had compounding, and some ellipsis and substitution.
-

modals... and compound sentences...
-

modals... and compound sentences...
yeah used compound sentences often with multiple conjunctions, it was standard terms often jargon-like with "domestic ports", and the other had informal language with contractions..
-
What did you guys write for features to show that Part 2 was formal? I think I wrote use of jargon and passive voice but dunno the last one
jargon, declarative to inform terms and conditions and capitalised pronouns.
wanted to mention passive but couldn't discuss it. LOL

Standard English Topic-Comment structure :)
-
I said standard spelling and grammar such as proper nouns with a capital, compound sentences and lack of pronouns
-
yeah definitely lack of pronouns, nominalisation, lack of contractions shortening..and the use of jargon..etc etc
-

Standard English Topic-Comment structure :)
ahhh good idea, didn't mention information flow once in that.
-
I wrote something like use of passive as they wanted to take an authoritative stance rather then a casual or intimate one..
-
I wouldn't stress, none of the above seem inherently wrong... marks for all! Wee! :D
-
Hmm I think I got at least 30% of each question wrong lol (the 5 and 6 mark ones)
and maybe 10/15 for essay,
With Mid A SAC marks
what kind of SS do you think I'll get?
-
jargon, declarative to inform terms and conditions and capitalised pronouns.
wanted to mention passive but couldn't discuss it. LOL
All this i did

do you mean capitalised proper nouns?
-
How about the relationship between A and C? I wrote it was somewhat close, even though they were strangers as there was overlapping which seemed as though they accepted it and completing each other sentences
-
How about the relationship between A and C? I wrote it was somewhat close, even though they were strangers as there was overlapping which seemed as though they accepted it and completing each other sentences
I said their relationship was distant however they respected each other
-
^ yeah i mentioned they had established a close relationship despite being strangers seen through a huge range of features, like those mentioned (overlap, finishing sentences, shared knowledge, etc...)
-
oh yea I said inference (west gate and I pictured it to have hands making the round gesture, anyone? :D)
-
What was the darn stylistic feature for question 2 for written?
-
I can't even remember a question on stylistic features...
-
I can't even remember a question on stylistic features...
It was only worth two marks "everday ideas are taking off" or something like that.
-

yay, what i said. :)
-

Also there was a genuine interest in maintaining politeness by keeping the topic flowing as there were lots of pause fillers and minimal responses in the latter part of the section indicating attempt to keep discussion from dwindling.
-

i said personification, but i think they will accept it for figurative language
such as pun,metaphor
-
Okay i did Q11, wrote 4 and a bit pages, but i have small hand writing, loved that essay question so hopefully that will salvage the marks i would have lost on Q,8 &10
it was a pun!!!!!! YAY
thank god its over could actually get a decent mark
-
How many pages did they give us? I wrote up until 1/4 of the last page w/o double space
-

I would agree - in fact, even just to say 'figurative' would have been fine I'm sure :)
-
yeah lol...
haven't seen you on for ages...
lol...where have you been..
i found section one quite hard....compared to the prac exams i've done
-
I found section 1 the hardest, what were the two discourse particles? I could only see like, then I talked about OMG (even though it's an interjection..)
-
I found section 1 the hardest, what were the two discourse particles? I could only see like, then I talked about OMG (even though it's an interjection..)
different uses of like.
one for chat style ad to appeal to readers and the other in front of seriously for emphasis, and to say it was not a joke...
-
oh damn didn't realise thought they all had the same function
-
I found section 1 the hardest, what were the two discourse particles? I could only see like, then I talked about OMG (even though it's an interjection..)
Yeah that's cool, the OMG is a prefatory discourse particle.
The other - 'like' (either in "no, like seriously" or " VAustralia is like, totally launching")
-
...Then I went on to talking about 'totally' because I thought OMG was wrong.. hmm
-

Yeah that's cool, the OMG is a prefatory discourse particle.
The other - 'like' (either in "no, like seriously" or " VAustralia is like, totally launching")
so do you think OMG is correct?
-
i reckon it would be one of them... discourse particles are saying that we say a lot to establish rapport or to show close social distance... so i guess it would be one of them ...
hopefully ....
-
fingers crossed!
-

Absolutely. It's pretty much devoid of meaning and just serves to introduce/preface the comment to follow.
-

awesome, i added in minimal responses as well.
wooop.
i didn't really mind this exam, it was pretty good, just difficult to know if i worded my responses correctly, or didn't leave any important details out.
hmm, i have absolutely no idea what i'll get haha.
-
I think we all feel like that....Bit shot in the dark mark wise for me at least anyway
-
where the hell was cohesion and coherence?!
-
where the hell was cohesion and coherence?!
they tested them on 2008 and 2009, and left out patterning techniques, so it was a change on question..
-
same i'm very unsure .. i think what will let me down is the wording of my responses!
I feel like i didn't do so good but i'm hoping for a nice surprise :-\
-
same here... EL is a subject that requires study and MORE than one answer to a question
anyway ...
good luck guys ~~
is all DONE now
-
What was the function of Part 1 Text 1?
I wrote to advertise the launch of the Melbourne to LA flight and to open up to a wider market (i.e. teenagers) through the use of language
-
I said "literally" was the other discourse particle, I didn't think it added much meaning to the sentence but I dunno if I'll get anything for it..
-
What was the function of Part 1 Text 1?

i think what you wrote is right.
ive never really used any other function/purpose then the standard to inform/persuade
so i said to inform about the deal of melbourne to LA and to persuade the audience in using them with the wider market, i made it sound better then this but basically thats it.
-
oh.. I guess I may have been too general and didn't linguistically explain it
-

do you mean capitalised proper nouns?
yes but ah f%$k i wrote pro nouns in the exam :'( :'( :'(
-
this is english language, pro is short for proper :)
-
I said there was 2 functions. One to inform of the product and another to entertain with the nonstandard language and discourse particles.
Im fucking pleased. I thought it was easy and you guy who studied must have thought it was piss. I struggled with the wording on the short answers, found myself repeating a few things but I think I did enough. For the essay I did q13 and wrote all about PC and attitudes, taxed all that shit from the thread we made last night. Haha. and 5 pages in 55 minutes with all 5 bodies, not all complete though. =\ still chuffed that its over and chuffed that it turned out not too hard.
BTW when I saw the essay topics I thought they were pretty kind. I had trouble picking which one, I could have written equally as much on all 3 even though im not that great.
-
this is english language, pro is short for proper :)
really!? thats cool as. guess you have nothing to worry about then balakers :)
-
haha ..you guys were pro...
i was like thinking for most of the time ....
i guess knowing too much can be disastrous ...
i only had 35 mins to write my essay ..
so ended up...screwing it with intro+2 body paragraphs+ordinary conclusion
BAD... :(
-
I was so happy that the first topic came up, it's the only essay I practiced on xD
-
okay 3 questions!!
firstly was q 1 to inform the reader of the shit thats going on and to instruct the reader to buy tickets as well as where to?
question 3 was it a pun?
and i think it was question 4 the one that asked for the 3 features that show the fomality.. would i get full marks for saying 1) there was no contractions as in they said "are not" not "aren't" 2) capitilising important things like "Guest Contact Centre" and 3) they used lots of specific dates like "1st Dec, 2009" to add formalitiy??
thankyou!! :D

If the dates were to add to the formality then it would have been writen December, not Dec.

LOl hes just joking , its clearly wrong, pro nouns = he she etc

yeah contractions are informal so thats fine.
i'm not so sure about the specific dates, but you could back it up with metalanguage and it would be fine, so something about it being declarative sentence to state facts to increase formality, etc.
-

really dont worry. i did the same thing. :)
-
Haha I know some people who only had 5-10 minutes left before section 3 :D
Best decision I made was to do essay first
-
Mega concerned with my exam! I wrote that Q3 for written was personification, which clearly when I walked out the exam I clicked that it was a metaphor! And I struggled with comparing the syntactic features.. and the essay.. I did 11 and im worried about that as well! I wrote 3 and a half pages with 15 words a line but over used stimulus material for my last paragraph!
Overall, I found the exam challenging compared to practice exams!
-
I wouldn't know about prac exams because I didn't do any, but I think they were pretty generous with the very general exam topics, and Text 2 which had tonnes of non-fluency features (I think maybe an overuse of them)
-
I think the texts were fair, just I didn't expect two 6 mark questions on formality and informality..
also, no chance of getting 1 out of 2 for Q3 of written is there? obviously I won't get the mark for identifying the correct stylistic feature, but if I dodged the purpose of it could I possible gain a mark?
Gah! Just thankful exam is over!
-

Good question.. hopefully they're kind enough to award marks; after all, regardless of the stylistic it was all for the same purpose.
-
Let's hope so!!
-
i said the stylistic device was a metaphor because it is non-literal use of the term 'take off' because an idea can't literally 'take off'. But i think they should accept pun as well because of the double meaning of to 'take off'.
-
I actually had a nightmare about this exam last night. That is not a good sign, subconscious!
-
:o nightmares! thats not good.
-
Haha it was crazy! Someone came to my house and was like, 'look, you actually didn't get any marks. This has never happened before.' :idiot2:
-
Man I have these nightmares all the time.
Had a dream I thought the methods exam 2 was at 3.00 and not 11.45, and then I realized like 15 mins before the exam started and then I rushed to try and get to school, and the traffic was fucked and then it passed the 30 mins of writing time and then I was screwed.
And then there was the living nightmare on Friday morning in the methods exam 1...
I just dream about bad shit happening all the time.
Apparently some people have really creative dreams. Clearly I am not one of them...
-
i used whiteout in my exam whould i lose marks by using whiteout?
-
i used whiteout in my exam whould i lose marks by using whiteout?
how were you allowed in? in my exams we get checked for white out and all that stuff. but as long as you didn't white out any part of the typing then you should be ok i would think?
-
i used whiteout in my exam whould i lose marks by using whiteout?
Don't even worry. It's like when people write in pencil and you're not allowed to; they still mark it, they're not complete bastards lol. :)
-
just annoyed that after trying to wrap my head around cohesion and coherence, it wasn't even there

Did anyone end up finding a paper or is able to upload?
If you can't upload i'd be the happiest alive if you could fill me in questions 4,5, 8, 9 & 10 ?
Biggest +karma !
