LMFAO the essay topic (first one) almost the same as what I wrote for you guys to mark in the ENgLang thread (well the ideas are similar)!! Wrote almost all pages and 1/4 of last page.. in 55 mins

Wtf was last question of spoken? Had no idea how to answer (besides saying went from phatic interaction to transactional). Were we supposed to mention sentence structure, types or what? Had no time

Also what features did you guys get that represents formal in Part 2 of Text 1?

Ooooh... that one... my brain died and i wrote metaphor, it was the closest thing i could think of(still didnt fit but i forgot to go back to it... i think that Q was only 2 marks anyway)... totally forgot about pun

I did 13, i like the political language/ language used to influence people kind of thing, so worked out for me :D

Thank god there were 3 choices this year also...

To be honest I made shit up for most of the questions (wrote adjacency pair, overlapping at least 5 times) and the last question about syntax I had no idea how to answer. What did people get/

I hated the first question on spoken.  There was soo much bull shit to discuss.  Think I screwed it.

For syntax, the second lot had ellipsis.  Also the first lot had some interrogatives.  Spoke about tense.  Anything I could think of really.  Might have thrown in parataxis as well....

I also got metaphor but it didnt really "feel" like a metaphor to me...but i needed to write something down

Look if they didn't accept metaphor they'd be pretty tight, given that a pun is based in metaphorical extension. ;)

I commented on sentence type, sentence structure as the second part was all simple and the first had compounding, and some ellipsis and substitution.

yeah used compound sentences often with multiple conjunctions, it was standard terms often jargon-like with "domestic ports", and the other had informal language with contractions..

I wrote something like use of passive as they wanted to take an authoritative stance rather then a casual or intimate one..

How about the relationship between A and C? I wrote it was somewhat close, even though they were strangers as there was overlapping which seemed as though they accepted it and completing each other sentences

Also there was a genuine interest in maintaining politeness by keeping the topic flowing as there were lots of pause fillers and minimal responses in the latter part of the section indicating attempt to keep discussion from dwindling.

different uses of like.

one for chat style ad to appeal to readers and the other in front of seriously for emphasis, and to say it was not a joke...

Yeah that's cool, the OMG is a prefatory discourse particle.

The other - 'like' (either in "no, like seriously" or " VAustralia is like, totally launching")
Title: Re: Englang Exam Discussion!

Title: Re: Englang Exam Discussion!

i reckon it would be one of them... discourse particles are saying that we say a lot to establish rapport or to show close social distance... so i guess it would be one of them ...
hopefully ....

Absolutely. It's pretty much devoid of meaning and just serves to introduce/preface the comment to follow.

awesome, i added in minimal responses as well.

i think what you wrote is right.
ive never really used any other function/purpose then the standard to inform/persuade
so i said to inform about the deal of melbourne to LA and to persuade the audience in using them with the wider market, i made it sound better then this but basically thats it.

I said there was 2 functions. One to inform of the product and another to entertain with the nonstandard language and discourse particles.

Im fucking pleased. I thought it was easy and you guy who studied must have thought it was piss. I struggled with the wording on the short answers, found myself repeating a few things but I think I did enough. For the essay I did q13 and wrote all about PC and attitudes, taxed all that shit from the thread we made last night. Haha. and 5 pages in 55 minutes with all 5 bodies, not all complete though. =\ still chuffed that its over and chuffed that it turned out not too hard.

BTW when I saw the essay topics I thought they were pretty kind. I had trouble picking which one, I could have written equally as much on all 3 even though im not that great.

okay 3 questions!!
firstly was q 1 to inform the reader of the shit thats going on and to instruct the reader to buy tickets as well as where to?
question 3 was it a pun?
and i think it was question 4 the one that asked for the 3 features that show the fomality.. would i get full marks for saying 1) there was no contractions as in they said "are not" not "aren't" 2) capitilising important things like "Guest Contact Centre" and 3) they used lots of specific dates like "1st Dec, 2009" to add formalitiy??

and i think it was question 4 the one that asked for the 3 features that show the fomality.. would i get full marks for saying 1) there was no contractions as in they said "are not" not "aren't" 2) capitilising important things like "Guest Contact Centre" and 3) they used lots of specific dates like "1st Dec, 2009" to add formalitiy??

thankyou!! :D

If the dates were to add to the formality then it would have been writen December, not Dec.

yeah contractions are informal so thats fine.
i'm not so sure about the specific dates, but you could back it up with metalanguage and it would be fine, so something about it being declarative sentence to state facts to increase formality, etc.

Mega concerned with my exam! I wrote that Q3 for written was personification, which clearly when I walked out the exam I clicked that it was a metaphor! And I struggled with comparing the syntactic features.. and the essay.. I did 11 and im worried about that as well! I wrote 3 and a half pages with 15 words a line but over used stimulus material for my last paragraph!

Overall, I found the exam challenging compared to practice exams!

I wouldn't know about prac exams because I didn't do any, but I think they were pretty generous with the very general exam topics, and Text 2 which had tonnes of non-fluency features (I think maybe an overuse of them)

I think the texts were fair, just I didn't expect two 6 mark questions on formality and informality..

also, no chance of getting 1 out of 2 for Q3 of written is there? obviously I won't get the mark for identifying the correct stylistic feature, but if I dodged the purpose of it could I possible gain a mark?

Gah! Just thankful exam is over!

Good question.. hopefully they're kind enough to award marks; after all, regardless of the stylistic it was all for the same purpose.

i said the stylistic device was a metaphor because it is non-literal use of the term 'take off' because an idea can't literally 'take off'. But i think they should accept pun as well because of the double meaning of to 'take off'.

Man I have these nightmares all the time.

Had a dream I thought the methods exam 2 was at 3.00 and not 11.45, and then I realized like 15 mins before the exam started and then I rushed to try and get to school, and the traffic was fucked and then it passed the 30 mins of writing time and then I was screwed.

And then there was the living nightmare on Friday morning in the methods exam 1...

I just dream about bad shit happening all the time.

Apparently some people have really creative dreams.  Clearly I am not one of them...

how were you allowed in? in my exams we get checked for white out and all that stuff. but as long as you didn't white out any part of the typing then you should be ok i would think?

Don't even worry. It's like when people write in pencil and you're not allowed to; they still mark it, they're not complete bastards lol. :)
