Methods and i were friends - BUT NO MORE! I HATE YOU, YOU STUPID SONNUVABITCH SUBJECT!
-
lol thanks people, thanks for this exam my chances of getting 35 in methods just died, so now i wont get into melbourne uni instead latrobe, and cause of travel distances i will have to move out of home, quit my job, get a new job/apartment. story of my life because of a fucking cone :(

lol calm down im sure you did fine

I heard there's gonna be 3 extended response questions on the next exam involving cones (and tasmania jones).
-
THE CONE OF DEATH INDEED!!!
-
LOL stroodle, made my day :)
btw i did the tasmania jones qn a couple days ago and got 14/15 :S was it really that hard? i dont get it :S
-
Hopefully the cone of death will be in exam 2, and it'll be stuck up Tasmania Jones ass once you've finished working out the time and velocity at which he hits it.
-

True there's gona be one about him and Victoria Jones making babies using exponential functions

Created a facebook group page
Facebook page
ahaha

Freaking Cone just killed my chances of getting a scholarship... now I gonna have to find means to get money while in Uni.... Not even Eligible for a Hex... Omg...
-
haha can i be an admin? seeing as it was my naming ;)
-
Just out of interest are we expected to know how to work such questions?
-
Haha cone of death, i like that
Just out of interest are we expected to know how to work such questions?
it was on the exam... so yeah?

Why would they throw a random Year 11 question in there, its SICKENING!!! >.<

Damn that cone!!! it's probably going to stop me from getting a 90+ enter and getting my KLDYS scholarship for biomed at melbourne uni!!! Damn you evil cone/cylinder and vcaa
-
who the fuck is tasmania jones?
-
vcaa exam 2 2007, apparently it was hard :S
-
tasmania jones is an invention by the vcaa, and shows up every year on the vcaa exams, asking us to use maths to get him out of trouble!! maybe if tasmania jones could solve his own problems maths could be easier!!

Funniest quote I ever heard
-
Yeah Tasmania Jones appears in nearly every VCAA exam. Its suppose to go with the famous character Indiana, but yeah copyright issues.
I'd love to see a question like that one haha

I wanna know who writes these exam questions... some fag no doubt
-
Hey can we also make a i hate tasmania jones facebook page?
-
Best to wait till after the exam 2 to do it, generates more frustration haha
-
LOL the cone was the last question, wasn't it? :P How was the exam in general?
-
Very Easy. 1 boom, 2 boom, 3 boom, 4 boom, 5 boom, 6 boom, 7 boom, 8 boom, 9 boom, 10 boom, 11 FML!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you have the actual question? Sounds quite interesting, a cone of death with similar triangles :)

Hey can we also make a i hate tasmania jones facebook page?
I heard that Tasmania Jones isn't appearing this year - apparently there is this one guy at the VCAA who specialises in writing the Tasmania Jones questions, and he isn't allowed to write the exam this year because his son's completing year 12.
I'm hoping this isn't true, because I like it when they add a bit of adventure to the exam.
-
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKKKKKKKKKKKKK!
I hate VCAA so much... 5 marks on this piece of shit question gone.
How can you give a 5 mark question without at least making it a 'show'?
worked so hard to minimise dumb errors, and now straight away on one question lose 5 marks.
sat there staring at the question for half an hour, heart bloody sank. first time I couldn't do a question, and it had to be on the exam...
shattered.

ffs people dS/dr=0 is worth one mark... so no one should've gotten -5 marks
-
Join the club....
NO Tasmania Jones?? how shattering, at least the evil cone of death will make up for it or VCAA will come up with another character that is just as frustrating.
-
Haha good old tasmania jones...
I lol'ed at the ass velocity question
Everyone join the fb page (*nods*)
BTW JinXi nice sig "2011 : Seeking Revenge on VCAA"

The worst part is I got the rest of the paper right. You guys probably did too. For me that was huge, I worked so hard on not making silly errors because I knew it would be the only obstacle to me getting full marks... or so I thought.
:(
-
ffs people dS/dr=0 is worth one mark... so no one should've gotten -5 marks
Do you think the expression itself is worth a mark? Wouldn't it be more of the correct expression for surface area=zero and then one mark for the answer.
having said that, i really hope your right though.

Every assessment report I've read for the past 5 years always stated that writing f'(x)=0 is worth a method mark

hey people will i get 2 marks for writing dS/dr = 0 for part c, and then solving from whatever i got in part b?

yea but how far do u think consequential marking will go?
-
yea but how far do u think consequential marking will go?
not very.
if they wanted consequentially mark this q, they would just have made it a show in part a to save themselves the trouble.
5 marks docked looks likely...
-
Part A definitely should have been a show q, i even told the examiner that on the paper. Fucking ridiculous that you can lose five marks because of something that isnt in the study design, or the assumed knowledge from year 11. VCAA go fuck yourselves. if part a was a show then at least people could have shown that they can sub the value of h into the formula and then be able to show that they can differentiate and realise the maximum will occur at dS/dr=0. isnt the point of an exam to be able to show what you can do, not highlight one minor part that you can't, which then makes you unable to work out what really matters in methods. VENT COMPLETE

In these situations, I'm pretty sure you're meant to just make up any reasonable value (nothing like r=0 of course) and continue to use that for the next parts. You'll lose out on the answer mark but least you get the ones for the working out. But yeh, it's pretty difficult to concede the first part and rely on doing this in a methods exam where you know every mark counts for a lot.
-
Was also in the totally same situation as you Stonecold, half an hour looking at that one question, writing crap next to it. for the value of h i practically made up i got a negative radius. yeah cos that makes sense, only infuriated me more.
-
Thats what alot of people in my school did, but the thing is, if you make r shoddy like = 0, then the other 2 questions break
oh god, i had 30 minutes for this question and what the hell happened? i noticed that time was up, and i didn't get time to check my answers....FML!
-
I agree with you guys, definitely not a methods question, this belongs in Specialist!
Fortunately because the majority of people couldn't do this question, if you were able to do most of the paper besides this question, you'll still be ranked highly!
I also strongly believe that this question will receive consequential marks - it's not fair that people should lose 5 marks because they couldn't do part a!
-
I was trying to do this question for 25 minutes...
I thought the cylinder was a third of the cone's volume T_T
Somebody said this too over at ituteforums and I got really excited that I'd gotten
it right but nopeeee. My class never got taught similar triangles (at least not when I was listenning)

I basically only knew about similar triangles because I did Further as a 3/4 subject last year. Very glad I did Further now.
-
i did the same as you!
haha... i figured out the volume of the cone and then divided it by three to get the 'volume' of the cylinder
and then rearranged to make h the subject.
FAIL.

loll OMG shakehands!! i thought the cone and the cynlinder had the SAME volume because i got maximum R=0 at first and den i knew des was wrong so i changed it to another method= = ~

I can't wait to read the examiners report. There would have been so many fun and creative ways people would have gone about this Q. :)
-
it's gonna be one sad report me thinks. -_-
his pet peeve is miscalculations
with so many big numbers.. and multiplying and dividing numbers left right and centre.. no doubt theres gonna be careless errors
mr. chief is going to fume!

Knew about similar triangles but complete mind blank fucked me over
only realised what the question was asking for with 30 secs to go :(

"It was very disappointing to see so many students failing to answer this question. As methods students, prior knowledge of ALL maths taught at VCE are expected and it is extremely disappointing that students only learnt out of a Methods CAS book and where unable to answer a type of question most would have never seen before in their lives. As students are studying mathematical methods, all mathematical methods should be known."
-
I thought most people learnt about similar triangles in year 8-9, if not before.
-
Ahh I've seen a few similar triangles lately and it's even in one of the worked examples in MathsQuest with related rates (which I thought would be on exam 1).
But then I freaked out about the cylinder in the cone and totally left it out. I WAS EVEN THINKING ABOUT IT DAMMIT. Also ran out of time BUT STILL.
ADFHUGLDFG.

Either forgetting or untaught. Don't remember having any geometry besides h/a/p formulas.

Yes I did exactly that! Man I felt like such a genius at the time when I figured the 'relationship' between the cone
and the cylinder. EPICCC FAILL.
" some students assumed that a cone is a square"
LMAO! Gosh so much procrastination right now. We should be studying for exam 2 T_T
-
Had not idea that similarities was part of the methods course... I used similarities and got the right answer 1st, before thinking too much, and changing it -.-
And if it was taught in yr 8/9 it shouldn't be in VCE methods, all of methods course should be from Unit1/2/3/4. FML though
-

It's not specifically part of the methods course I don't think. But simple geometry like this is considered general maths knowledge so you should know it! :P
-
^
Considered simple by those who were taught it...
-
Everyone was taught it at one point in their secondary (or maybe primary) education?
-
^
Lies...I have only heard about similar triangles twice in my life. Teacher in GMA mentioned it can be used for a question as an alternative method for something, and after exam during the "ARGH WHAT ANSWERS" period..

I agree. I'm sure we have done something similar, probably at some stage while doing trig, but i never remember 'similar triangles' being taught to us, although i have heard of it before occasionally.
-
Right... sounds like geometry should be added to the methods curriculum. ;)

HAHAHAHAHA. That definitely describes what happened to me and basically my whole year level from about 9:00 till 10:15 this morning..
Death by cone....

A lot of people will have some nightmares involving ice-cream cones tonight :P

i ate an ice cream cone before.

CONEDOM
now is that really neccesary?

I used similar triangle but didn't realise the ratio for r was 10 or w/e MINUS r /r and just used r/5 =[

Addition wasn't taught as part of Methods course yet you still managed to do that....
-
^Oh lets compare something we have been able to do for 15 or so years give or take a few with something a fair number of people have NEVER been taught in their lives...
-
Addition wasn't taught as part of Methods course yet you still managed to do that....
Addition is an integral part of maths...
I only learned similar triangles this year in further though
But if you've done loads of practice exams then you should know that you should know similar triangles...
And even if you didn't, it would've been logical to use ratios
-
I do think it was possible to do with methods knowledge. You could construct a graph with the vertex at the origin. The question, however, was whether it was an appropriate question for the exam.
-
Well as TT proved, it is actually on the study design and is therefore assumed knowledge, in which case it's 'legal' and fair game really. Problem is whether it's 'ethical' or simply put, a dog move by VCAA. Similarly, all of Chemistry 1/2 is apparently assumed knowledge for 3/4. However, the dreaded occasion where they bring out all that 1/2 only stuff like the different atomic models and such has never come yet and I don't expect it to given it's complete lack of synergy with the content in 3/4. Maths is a bit more of a grey area I'd say since most of the concepts relate. Still, the fact that certain schools haven't taught it in previous years worries me though because I'm fairly certain I learnt similar triangles a long time before Methods 3/4... In this case, it'd more be the schools' fault than VCAA's if so.
