Can someone explain to me what this dot point refers to, from the study design.
DOT POINT 6: Key aspects of corporate management theory;
Thanks
-
Is it to do with the Karpin Report (aka management skills)??

I was thinking that, but wasnt sure. It says acpect of corporate management theory and the report critcised skills, so i didnt see how it was relevant..

lol i remember asking the exact same thing to my teacher last year
here's what a basic idea of what it is. There are a few theories of how to manage organisations and these thoeries have changed and developed over time.
In the beginning, corporations managed with the
Classical Theories
This is the belief that
- organasations should be bureaucratic to operate effeciently
- there must be a strict heirachichal organisational sturcutre with clear lines of communication (strictly top down)
- little or no employee consultation
Then organisations managed with a scientific approach
Scientific Theories
- emphasis on systematic methods to improve productivity
- approach where management analysies a job in great detail to discover the best way to perform it
- development of production lines
Behavioural Management Theory
-employees should be the main focus of the way in which the business is organised and managed
- applying maslow's heirachy of needs
- theory closest to today's organisations
in saying this, please DO NOT stress about this AT ALL. i highly doubt there will be a question about 'corporate management theory'. basically, it's not in my text book and i'm assuming it's not in yours.
and if they don't even bother mentioning it in the textbook, then i doubt it'll be on the exam. they have a lot more things to ask about than this.
far out. what is going on with these maniac bullet points?

Thank you elaine...
My teacher couldnt explain what it was and she said the same as you. They MOST likely would not ask you a qustion on the exam about such a small topic, when more important ones can be asked. However, it was in the study design so i thought that I ahould atleast have an understanding of what it envolved.
Thanks

Hey, i'm just having trouble with these SD key knowledge for U3 AOS3:
• operations function and its relationship to business objectives and business strategy;
I understand the 'business objectives and business strategy' part but what exactly is an operations 'function'?
My response: Operations management refers to the task of managing the process that transforms resources into finished goods and/or services. (I am not to sure if this is what the dot point is asking)
• characteristics of operations management within a range of organisations;
Is this basically referring to the way different organisations manage their resources differently (example: a goods provider will be different to that of a service provider).
• operations, productivity and business competitiveness in terms of cost, quality and delivery;
Is this what it means: The operations manager is trying to increase productivity in order to become more competitive.. blah blah.. if the operations are being managed efficiently, then costs will be minimised, the quality of the product should increase and delivery times and accuracy should improve..
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

hmm the operations 'function' is a bit ambigous, but i am thinking that it is referring to the operations elements- someone correct me if i am wrong.
essentially, the dot point is asking- how do the management of the inputs, processes and outputs aid the business into achieving its business objectives? For example, careful monitoring of the quality of the inputs and processing stage will result in high quality outputs (products) and minimise defective products, which may be one of the businesses' aims.
also, it may also be referring to what strategies can be utilised (in relation to the inputs, processes and outputs) to achieve the businesses objectives? this is where you can talk about facilities design and layout, materials management, technology, quality management.
but again, i am reallly unsure and am just guessing- best be clarifying with your teacher :)

yes, this is what i would assume. def need to know one organisation that deals with products and one that is a service organisation and how the 4 OM strategies are implemented in each. i used rip curl and village.

yes this is what they are asking for, and don't forget to think about how the OM is trying to increase productivity- these strategies are of the essence of OM
i hope that was a little helpful, i'll dig up my notes to see what i wrote (although i didn't use the study design, so no guarantee that i have anything on those points lol)

AWESOME! Thanks so much for doing all of that - your Rip Curl notes are really good, thank you
btw, did you link each AOS topic to an organisation or did you just do it for operations management?

Hey guys, I have another question regarding a dot point in the HR AOS:
– termination management including entitlement and transition issues;
What are transition issues?
This is all I could find that might be relevant???:
- sensitivity at termination
- retirement: provide assistance, alert and plan well in advance
- resignation: try to maintain good relationships with staff who are retiring
- retrenchment: management should try to reduce the hardship for the retrenched employees and their dependants.

yep, that's exactly what that means.
basically, the organisation would want to make the transition as smooth as possible to prevent law suits or the employee giving prospective employees a 'bad word'.
