what is it? and how much do I need to know about it?
I've seen a few questions relating to this, never learnt it though.

Its just solar panels. Photons hit electrons; electrons fly off; current is formed.
I really don't think you need to know the mechanism or any details. As I said in another thread the focus with all this energy production stuff is the comparison between them. The relative efficiencies and costs etc.
