Hand write - then type

Never written notes. Don't know about Bio though. May be worthwhile if it helps you to understand and remember the (copious amounts of, I hear..) theory.

Depends how you take notes. If you're actively taking notes, then sure, hand written is fine, provided you can read your writing. If you're just copying it, with little brain activity involved, type it. Get it over and done with quickly so you can go over it again

Typing notes? Bringing a computer to class is way annoying. I usually make notes for subjects at the start of the year then get lazy later on...

Never made notes for any subject. I don't believe in notes. When it comes to exam time, there are better things you could be spending your time on than reading notes...

interesting indeed...

i think im gonna go ahead with the hand-writing then typing if necessary idea :)
so you guys recommend spending less time on making notes and more on doing actual questions/practice exams?

I just love your style about anything related to maths :P

I just read from a wide variety of sources. Making your own notes takes waayyy too long for someone who's lazy like me.

If you were to write notes though, I'd definitely recommend hand-writing first and then typing if you actually want to refer to them later/perfect them.

Yeah definitely, at least when you do practise exams, you are applying what you're learning and soon memorizing them.

I think both are important though really. I find that doing just practice exams - although usually sufficient - makes you far less adaptable to new-style questions than if you just studied the concepts for what they are, as opposed to basically studying for specific questions. People get in the rhythm of seeing VCAA put particular questions in the same year and get in the habit of mastering full mark answers for these, but the problem is that when they don't, they freak out and have no idea where to start. For example, in the BM exam that just passed, everyone thought a particular question was coming up but it didn't, but since they already had their answer for the 10 mark question memorised, they felt obliged to stick with it even though some claim it wasn't relevant. Not too sure about the specifics but I'm sure you get the point. Instead, learning the concepts allows you to do a question off a clean slate without any preconceptions. I believe this is what marks the difference between those who get low 40s and high 40s because those in the low 40s generally know the entire course and have done heaps of practice exams, but inevitably screw up the strange question that VCAA inevitably manages to fit in every year. Especially for bio, I would recommend notes. There is just SO much to cover that there's some stuff that VCAA's never tested before, but could easily manage to test in the coming exams. Doing notes ensures you cover every part of the study design.

I prefer typing - it makes it easier to edit them afterwards, and my handwriting is atrocious so it's neater.

...I draw diagrams and arrows and all this visual stuff for my maths/sciences notes, there's no way I can type them up =.=

oh god, this is quite worrying but...i dont think i even wrote notes this year.
now i'm gonna be stressing (and probably feeling regretful) until dec 13!

but then again, i can't actually write notes for my subjects

I write notes by hand but I don't do it with the intent to read over them. I just write them because getting the stuff that's in my head onto paper helps to cement it there.

I wrote way less notes in VCE than currently, but only ever by hand. PC notes just don't work for me, I can't do neat diagrams etc.

for Accounting, which is relatively theory-heavy with definitions, I do the exercises before class, write my notes during class and before a test/outcome/SAC I type my notes up as a last 'refreshment' of the chapters

I just do both. I'm comfortable with handwriting or typing up my notes.

Generally, I tend to hand-write my notes, though when I can't be bothered I type them up. Either way is good.

I prefer to type, keeps it clean and can be easily edited, rather than scribbling out unneeded stuff.
And, you can print multiple copies :)

It's not just that making notes is cumbersome for mathematicians-to-be (ie. lazy kids), but overall notes for math where you simply write out the 'theory' (like what's in the textbooks) are useless. What you should do instead is understand the fundamentals properly, prove things for yourself rather than just accepting them as fact and attempting to memorise them. If you understand something well enough to prove it from basics, chances are you won't forget it, and even if you do you can derive it from first principles(lol okay not always first principles, but a much more basic level).

IMO, notes are a pain.  Handwritten are just messy, and computerised take forever, and it is hard to add diagrams.

Unless you feel that notes are helping you to learn, which they do for some people, but not really me, then I wouldn't waste my time.  Not for VCE anyway.

Moreover, if you are going to make notes, focus on weak areas that you are unsure of.  There is absolutely no point writing out stuff that you already know.  It is a form of procrastination.

Make a list of little details and errors, this will be far more valuable come exam time.

I highlight but not my handwritten ones, just something which is typed up.

Teevo: If nothing is clicking, then just read the textbook/whatever your using to make the notes out loud, then  try writing what you remember..do it multiple times ( reading ) until you understand properly, don't worry it's going to be hard at the start but it will work at the end..

If not, try typing it up. As people have said, the advantage to typing is that it is readible (if your own hand-writing is hard to read) and you can make multiple copies of it. Don't write large chucks of notes, rather in small dot points - break down the key concepts of what you're learning - that way, it will be easier to read and your notes will be condensed.

Moreover, if you are going to make notes, focus on weak areas that you are unsure of.  There is absolutely no point writing out stuff that you already know.  It is a form of procrastination.

Seconded.

As an aside I think that you should structure notes around the dot points in the study design, rather than just condensing the text book. Obviously, I have no idea if you're doing this already.. but if not, I recommend you do.
