Title: Persevere or do Further? :\
Post by: darren94 on November 15, 2010, 10:54:52 am
Next year I'll be in year 12, and I'm doing methods this year. I realised how badly I suck at methods when I could literally do not one question on the analysis section of the exam paper. -_- Maybe it was nerves.. idk? But I've always been a average-ish student in methods (Bish with the occasional C+ or B+, or C) My goal for my 4 subjects is at least 40 each... is 34 achievable in methods? or would I be better off doing further, and aim high?
which would be easier? ty
Note: When I do methods, I don't actually know what I'm doing half the time. I just do it from memory.. I don't fully get the math but I can remember what to do with it.. if you get what I mean.

Edit: I can't do both Methods and Further.... I desperately want to do Legal ,Psychology and Visual communication, so no can do...

For me, a 34 was little study before SACs and 4 prac exams during SWOTVAC in preparation for the exams (last year I got 34 which was A B+ B+). For Further similar studying methods (LOL) and a couple more prac exams (~10) and I'm estimating ~39/40 for exam 1 and ~55-59/60 for exam 2, so yeah. In my opinion it was a good choice not to repeat methods and instead pick up Further (had different opinions at the start of the year but I guess it all worked out in the end)

So a 41-50 in further is generally easier to achieve than a 34 in methods?

You just have to remove those tendencies of making stupid mistakes in Further (they cost more then making mistakes in methods), as losing over 10 marks overall can render you <40. Other then that getting over 40 in Further IMO is not as hard as getting a scaled >40 for methods. In addition, having some methods background has helped me with some modules (Graphs and relations and matrices) so I think you can do really well in Further.

It's easier to achieve better in Further if you are not so good in methods. You just have to watch out for silly errors and mistakes because they would cost you. But before choosing further, make sure that methods is not required for your uni course..if it's not, and you don't need it, best to go with something that will maximise your score.

Unless Methods is a prerequisite for any uni courses you're considering, then my advice is to go for further. Talk to your maths teachers/careers counsellor about it.

By the sounds of it, yeah.

Yeh go for Further, not only for generally better marks, but for stress as well.

If you get just that little bit behind in methods, or can't seem to crack a decent score, you're just gonna get pissed off with it and/or ignore it completely, which is definitely not gonna help your marks at all.
With further on the other hand, if you can keep up the decent marks, its just gonna push you harder to achieve a really good mark!

If you can do methods and understand it and so on, I recommend that you persevere. It is harder, but you extend yourself so much more. Methods is great for developing good problem-solving skills.

Don't worry if you're not great at Methods right now, methods 3/4 is basically the same as 1/2, so if you put time into it, I don't see why you can't master it in a short amount of time

A trap many people fall into is thinking they won't have to work in Further. However, since it's ridiculously competitive, you still have to practise if you want a good score in it

I pretty much failed units 1/2, but did wellish in 3/4. Different attitude, everything made a lot more sense in 3/4.

Just my 2 cents.

Agreed. Further involves a lot of practicing where as methods is more applying.
