Title: Heinemann wtf?!?!?!?
Post by: pi on November 19, 2010, 05:53:02 pm
Is anyone else annoyed that there is a new edition of the 4th edition of Heinemann chem out and it is nearly exactly the same as old 4th edition! Called 'the enhanced version', the only differences we could find were colour changes of some headings in  chapter reviews and some new irrelevant pics. + our school 'highly recommends' (means 'get it or else...') its purchase, wtf? Is this taking profits too far?

don't buy it.  study design hasn't changed, so it is a complete cash grab.

tell your school to ggf...

WTF? I've been stressing for like 2 weeks because I payed $40 for the old one. My teacher subsequently told me I HAD to buy the new one. On top of that, I went to Academic and General and they said it wasn't out yet. How'd you get it pi?

dw about it.  just get the pdf version of the new one, which will be the same as the new one except for the flashy new colours and pics.

*Sigh*
I've been here worrying that I would miss out on learning things that will be on the exam because of my old textbook.

but how?  if the study design hasn't changed, then the 'old' text will have everything you need to know haha...

WTF pi.
Our school does not highly recommend it at all.
In fact the booklist explicitly states that the previous edition is acceptable.
Just had Chemistry transition aswell and Sabo said the new edition affects you in no way.

I was told that the study design can be amended. Was shitting bricks that I would lose marks on a new topic not in my book.

LOL, yet another pi V iNerd argument.

lol, trust Sarbo if you want (record 15 kids who failed the unit 2 chem exam)... Good luck with trying to get over 25 SS in chem then!

But Delaney definitely knows his stuff and highly recommends it

Everyone disses Sabo. Give the guy a break. He clearly compared both books, showing the identical pages and said exactly what you said. The pictures changed and there are a bit of harder questions.

Look fellas, you don't need a book. I had both Delaney and Devlin this year, and we NEVER used the book. You have more than enough to succeed without the text, let alone requiring the new one.

I lost my book at the start of the year somewhere and never touched it, and I don't think I did badly on chem. Stick to the old book, and pi, stop raising alarm unnecessarily :P

No...not just this year...I'm talking ~5years back and off 'ratemyteachers'. She knows her stuff and all but apparently she's not present in class to teach it due to commitments such as being co-ordinator and all.

less co-ordinator, more that she is a hockey pro

+ongoing surgery (dont want to give details here)

even with all of that, she was here 80% of the time and half my class got A+ on the most recent exam

YES WHAT THE HELL?

I have to buy the 1/2 book.. its "enhanced" but I'm not sure to buy it or not..
Is it worth buying the 1/2 non-enhanced edition 2nd hand for 25 bucks?

Thanks.

iNerd:

This is not a clash of academic minds. If Einstein argued with Newton about which colour socks were superior, not only would this be a trivial argument belittling them both. It would be an argument that wastes intelligence.

I have been told by my chem faculty that the new textbook is a mistake by heinemann and not buy it. They thought there was a new study design or something so decided to release a new textbook etc...

Basically, I wouldn't buy the new textbook just yet, in my teacher's words, "If you have purchased the new textbook, return it, it's a complete waste of money, get the old one off one of the year 12's."
