Title: Holiday Homework...
Post by: luken93 on November 19, 2010, 07:52:02 pm
So what'd everyone get?
I wouldn't mind comparing my school with some of the "better" schools, to see how much we fall behind haha

I'm planning to do more than the prescribed amount, but here's an outline of mine:

Methods
 - Chapter 1 (Essentials)

Spesh
 - Chapter 1 (Essentials)

Chem
 - A few Yr 11 Qs to keep us up to date so we don't forget

English
 - Read 1 Book & Related Questions

I haven't got my "holiday homework" yet, I'm getting mine on "VCE Preparation/Transition" day (as my school calls it) - 26 Nov, after my exams finish. I'll post up what homework I've got, when I get it. =P

Though, I'm pretty sure my school will give me "holiday" homework for every single subject in any case.

You're luck that yours is a "day", mine is a whole "Head Start Program Week". :(

Can't wait to start it though, feels exciting for some reason.

Yeh we had a day, although I would've preferred a couple/week, as its so quick from finishing exams yesterday, meeting new teachers/homework today, then boom finished without any further contact to new teachers. I mean it's basically the biggest break where work can be done, and there's basically not much guidance at all...

Yeah, we do something similar. These next two weeks are year 11 for me.
Its good, I get to meet my teachers before the start of the new year.

I feel the same way as well.

Though I doubt I'll be feeling this way, halfway through next year.

Ditto. The worst part of it all is that we don't do any work until the final day. :(

Would much rather be at home knocking off portions of the year 12 textbooks :) :) :)

yeah I've got the same Head start/Transition week(s) (it actually goes for 2 weeks at my school)

-I know we're covering chapter 1 and 2 of Essentials (Methods) and the first 3 chapters (Further)
-Doing the first 2~3 chapters of the Cambridge Accounting book
-having guest speakers for English on how to prepare a speech because we're expected to prepare for our first SAC which will be an oral over the hols

not sure about Japanese but we'll see :o

We have two 'orientation' days.
Title: Re: Holiday Homework...
Post by: Furbob on November 19, 2010, 10:19:00 pm
hmm in a way I reckon 2 weeks is too long or maybe I'm just feeling lazy since we just had our 1/2 exams and going straight into year 12 + it's near the end of the year anyway...

Our transition timetable is terrible though! it's blocked in doubles so some people who are doing 4 subjects could have a day that they only need to be at school for one class. I also have a day with a triple free at the end but apparently we're not allowed to leave school early :o

When I finished MM 1/2 we were given a document to complete before the next year, it was never mentioned later though.

There's a year 12 camp next week, lots of people aren't going... and it's predominantly a social event anyway. No work is given etc as far as I am aware.

I think it's cool that you guys actually get holiday homework...

Our teachers would have a heart attack at that idea, for all the extra marking they'd have to do. >.<

lol, we get no homework either, but I think they just expect us to finish the course in each subject anyway (shows how lazy they are!)

I finish this week and I doubt I'm getting that much.. if any homework for the holidays.
I'll most likely complete the methods course, read the english texts and go through most of Unit 3 bio.

I believe relying on what your teachers set for you in year 12 will get you nowhere.. unless your a super genius lol.

Sighhh. Rohitpi, weren't you from MHS?

Isn't that like a uber high achieving school? Doesn't that mean the teachers should be really good?

Or does it mean the opposite, lol.

I couldn't talk about the teaching there, since I don't go to MHS - though it's one of, if not the best schools in the state - in terms of academic results. I have 4 or 5 friends who go to MHS and they've told me that MHS is pretty good for what it's worth. They're also pretty decent at Water Polo - their school team is basically all state players. (I thought I'd just mention that!)

LOL as if you guys get one/two weeks for Year 12 prep, compared to my ONE day. I'd prefer having a longer prep for Year 12, than just one day. =P

Though, in saying that, this Friday is my last day of school and hence, is also my Year 12 prep day.

BEST OF LUCK for next year people! =)

LOL hopefully. =) It would be interesting if I happened to meet any of you guys at uni, it'd be like "oh, so that's who you are." =P GOOD LUCK TO YOU and everyone here on VN.

No Year 12 prep? I'd just assume your school expects you to do some form of work over the holidays - it's implied - you might as well get ahead. I'll enjoy my last weeks/months of actual freedom, before Year 12 starts - as I don't plan to study the whole holidays.

My school, in fact, reckons we should take a good break over the holidays and not do anything related to school, because next year will be hard enough. >.<

Gotta' love them.

And yeh, Monash FTW. ^^ Be hard to find anyone in amongst the thousands of other people though xD.

So far I've been to 3 subjects

methods: do exercise 1A
further: do a booklet of stuff thats mostly yr 11 revision D;

not much homework from my school either it seems.

good luck iNerd... I didn't read my literature texts this year, it realy does help. I ended up writing a 1000 word essay about Antigone based on what I had picked up in class discussion. Not the best aproach to VCE at all.

Read that one, it is the text study for the semester 2 exam

Brave New World and Antigone are not a text studies, and are pretty much optional (and boring) reads as they are used in the context writing (1. 'Visions of the Future' and 2. 'Justice').

Cricket - maybe not after so many losses, but still awesome to watch!

Quiet American - a novel by Graham Greene regarding the Vietnamese conflict, written in the eyes of a British journalist. Studied in yr11 at MHS. A really good read though, highly recommended to any-one!

My holiday homework (as given by school):

- Read English texts and revise for English Oral (SAC)
- Complete Ex. 2A, B, C, D of Essentials Math Methods
- Complete Revision Questions from "Making and Breaking the Law"

I didn't get any work from Chemistry or Latin - though I'll do some work on it anyhow.
