Title: Do I need methods for science?
Post by: darren94 on November 30, 2010, 12:44:50 am
My first preference for uni is bachelor of psych, but if I don't get this I plan on doing bachelor of arts/science. To do a science course, I don't need methods right? (I have psychology) just need a confirmation. Also.. What can science lead me to? (postgraduate wise) at monash btw . Ty

for monash

the prereqs
Units 3 and 4–one of biology, chemistry, mathematical methods (either), physics, geography, psychology or specialist mathematics, and a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English.

so u dont need methods but u need one of those other subjects like psych and 25 in english.

as in BSc major in psychology? like masters or phd...ill check online...

u dont get accreditation to become psychologist with 48 point major
u need 60 points... so u need to do extra units to gain accreditation

points just mean subjects/units...
so like if you take one subject its 6 points... so in BSc u need to major in something and you need 48 points of subjects to get a major... if u want aps accreditation...as in u want to work as a psych u need to do 60 points of subjects

plus if u look at the postgraduate studies most of them need an honours as well which is a 4th year after ur undergraduate degree
here are some of the postgrad courses, so really depends what sort of psychology u want to get into
it talks about the jobs a little
http://monash.edu/pubs/handbooks/courses/3231.html

http://monash.edu/pubs/handbooks/courses/2932.html
http://monash.edu/pubs/handbooks/courses/2116.html

maybe Glockmeister can elaborate since hes doing some psych in behavioural neuroscience

So for you, you're doing Immunology... where does that take you? Would that option be available to me too in Science? (Just wondering_)

completed hopefully.

i applied for honours. so either research in a lab at uni or institute or industry
or some other job in industry
or you can move to a completelydifferent field outside science...like some business job

yes that option is available for you, although you'll have to find out before second year starts because u need to do IMM2011 and one other uni listed (check here http://www.monash.edu.au/pubs/2011handbooks/undergrad/sci-aos-clayton.html and then look at the major sequence subjects u must take)

and actually im sure you can major in psych and imm if you so wish to... or whatever other major you want. let me write it out and see if that works.

By the way, also, why is Science@ monash needing only such a minimal ENTER score for entry? (Like 75.55) I thought something like science would be higher.. especially at clayton D: That's pretty good news for me but I wonder why it's so low?

yeah it does work out u can get an aps accredited major sequence doing three years of BSc and you can get a second major

so it would look like this (if you so decided to...u can change a few subjects here and there) if you lets say major in immunology and psychology

1st year
1st semester
PSY1011
CHM1031
BIO1011
PHS1080 (dont have to do this)
2nd semester
PSY1022
CHM1042
BIO1022
SCI1020

2nd year
1st semester
PSY2051
PSY2031
IMM2011
MIC2011 (dont have to do this one)
2nd semester
PSY2042
PSY2112
SCI2010
PHY2011 (dont have to do this one, you can choose another)

3rd year
1st semester
PSY3041
PSY3051
IMM3042
IMM3031
2nd semester
PSY3032
PSY3062
IMM3062
IMM3051

and that gives you the 60 points for psych that you can then take further with honours or postgrad options

i dunno maybe they need to fill in a certain quota of students and theres a heck of a lot of science students especially first year
so yes it is good news (for me it was too)

Apparently Monash has some advanced science course, which takes all the really high enter students and thus lowers the requirement for a normal BSc

ah yeah they have that too

Okay so after that 4 years I'll have the option to start training as a psychologist? [Doctor etc]

from what ive read

u need to have done undergraduate, honours and then 2 years supervision or postgraduate study and then you can be a registered practicing psychologist

supply and demand, there are less people applying with higher enters than positions available.

Apparently Monash has some advanced science course, which takes all the really high enter students and thus lowers the requirement for a normal BSc

Also there are many double degrees to do with Science. For example sci/eng requires 93+ and takes in 100 students. Other double degrees usually have higher enters thus even less people with higher scores in straight science thus the enter is even lower
