The first day of uni?
You'll have Academic Advice Day (AAD) on 24 January 2011 where you go into uni for the very first time to hear people speak about your course, welcoming you, telling you about the course requirements and all the formal stuff and not to mention you'll also get the opportunity to go on a campus tour and meet other people form the same course. Then from Tuesday 22 Feb to Friday 25 Feb is Orientation Week and the official start of Week 1 is Monday 28 Feb.
If you want to have a glance of the important dates at UoM, just go here.

Oh my god we start in February?
I want to cry.

It's traumatic, I know :(
February is meant to be for doing nothing.

In case you haven't noticed, Semester 1 is 8 weeks before the 1 week easter break followed by the last 4 weeks!!!
-
Like that's going to cheer me up, 8 weeks is wayy too long. 6/6 was the best

Nah, this time is 1 week break instead of the 2 weeks in Semester 2 - less time for catching up :idiot2:

I liked the two weeks... :'( I just had a look at La Trobe's calendar. They're exactly the same.

at least we can laugh at the VCE people :P

Does anyone know when we can choose tutorial times for summer term (Finance 1)?
Sorry just read the email.
-
January semester ftl. :(
-
whats that? optional classes for 2nd/3rd yr ppl?
-
Yes. Some subjects run in summer/winter only so they're termed intensives
-
Not really optional; it counts as a subject, so you do one less later. Depending on the subject, they can run for anywhere from 5-7 weeks (save for camp-style ones such as wine and geology) and are taught at a much faster rate. You can do them because you've failed a subject and need to repeat it, because you need to get a prerequisite out of the way, because you're bored in summer, because it's only offered in summer, because you want to finish a semester early, etc.
-
theres an 'academic advice day' on the 24th of jan.
what is this exactly?
-
You turn up to the uni and the faculty (eg science/arts/commerce etc) tell you all about the course, what you'll need to do, what subjects etc.
You get given a time to visit the uni and speak to a subject advisor if you need to. Academic Advice Day is something you really should go to, but if you're comfortable enrolling in subjects from home then you don't really need to come in again for your session

ok cooool, definitely will go - so we can speak with the advisor on the day? wouldnt there be so many people who are seeing them so it'll be difficult..?
-
Depending on what time you're given you might be able to speak to them on the day or you might have to come back a couple of days later. That's to stop them getting overloaded (although you can probably sneak in and get seen anyway)

hmmm ok i'll be sneaky then. cheers for info (:
-
depends a little on your course too...prettttty pointless if you're doing biomed for instance since you literally have 1 subject which is completely free choice and otherwise you are streamed arbitrarily or based on vce subjects.
i reckon pretty good to discuss with current uni students for other degrees though (before AAD) since they often have a better view of subjects.

Do a summer subject. :)
Business Finance during summer. Can I get an H1? Please?

No

I heard Business Finance during summer is way easier than if you do it during the semesters.

why because there more time?
-
Because there are less social events going on, less people around at uni to distract you, less other subjects to split your attention between, less hours per week to tire you out, less weeks in the semester to drain you, etc.
-
So, most students would therefore only take one subject in the Summer period?
-
Yes. I have 14 hours a week just for one subject over summer.
-
Yes. I have 14 hours a week just for one subject over summer.
Does that subject always have that contact time? Probably a good idea to do them over the summer..which subject?
-
No, it has 5 hour per week during semester. The subject is called Foundations of Electrical Networks. You can check how many hours each subject has during regular and summer semesters by looking it up in the handbook, if you're interested.
-
You can only do a maximum of 2 subjects in the summer semester. Any more and you'll be overloading and you'll need permission from your student centre to do so.
Summer semesters aren't favoured by many students because it means giving up your January-February holidays to be at uni and if the temp rises to 40 degrees and you have an exam on that day in the Royal Exhibition Building, get ready to be roasted.
-
Why the variation in contact hrs??
-
...
-
You're cramming 4 months of uni into 2, of course it's going to be a lot more
-
You're cramming 4 months of uni into 2, of course it's going to be a lot more
Would your recommend this?
I think I would do it if I end up in Biomed @ Melbourne.
Would I be able to study something like anatomy over the summer or is it only select subjects?
-
I personally don't like summer subjects but it depends on the individual. And anatomy won't be offered it's only a few subjects
-
Ahh, I see, do breadth subject count towards your GPA?
-
For postgrad medicine yes. For Masters/Honours it can depend on what you're applying for
-

I see, Im not too familiar with the course lengths so I just assumed.., Does unimelb have a page stating all the possible summer subjects?
-

For the summer subs, exams aren't held at REB. It's in a random building down the Law building side of campus towards Swanston street.
-
The Bouverie st one? I had a couple of exams there this year, it's quite decent.
And as for summer subjects, search the handbook with the filter set to summer semester only

Thank god because it would be overkill hiring such a massive venue for a relatively small number of students.

I like that one too, had my Fundamentals of Chem exam in there, has awesome air con from memory :P
-
Would anyone happen to have any past chem funda papers??
-
They're available on the UoM library website (access denied until you're enrolled) but here's one for you to look at

"it" being what...?
nevermind I think Im getting the dates mixed up..
-
Don't worry about the dates too much. Just wait until the offers come out and you'll get a whole bunch of papers. Then once you've enrolled, you'll get a student diary. Once you have that, all the dates will become as clear as day.
-
I have two completely unused diaries in my cupboard. I'd almost forgotten we even had them until you said that. :P

Blast, I just bought I dairy yesterday ahha, do the UoM dairies look good?
-
There is no better place for 3am slabs than south lawn.
Also damn the nightrider. When I see you say you're going to Doncaster, I don't expect to end up on a Tour de Warrandyte at quarter past five in the morning.
Uni protip: LAMBS' kebabs suck. Go to the one across the road.
Now, sleep time.
-
^ lol
-
Security can be depressingly alert at 3am :P
another tip: go to intersection cafe after a big night out (around the uni) - at least once.

is there any place that is available 24/7?
-
What do you mean by 'place' and 'available'?
-
is the longest uni break 2 weeks? i want to do a 7 week short course for hospitality.. would i be able to do this some time this year provided i got into melb uni ?
-
You would have to do it between semesters or over the summer break.
Dates are in my thread here
-
What do you mean by 'place' and 'available'?
for instance a library, study area? available obviously implies non-restricted? 24/7..lol

If you're an engineer you can get access to old engineering 24/7. Same with envi kids and the architecture building. Some buildings (e.g. frank tate) have much later or no closing times during exam periods too).
And yeah...that wasn't obvious, since you didn't specify a time.

If you're doing architecture subjects, you have access to architecture. If you're doing engineering subjects, you have access to old eng.
If you need access to a building during the night, get a friend to let you in. If you're not with friends, why are you even at uni in the middle of the night?
-
During the exam period some areas open 24/7 but I don't know why you'd want to be there at those times
-
Just wondering

In normal semester times, not that I'm aware of. There's too many of us and we're not that special.

Life's not fair. That's a fact. It's like the year 12 "common room" that some people have. Some have and some don't.

You can come to the biomed library but you might get dirty looks :P
