Title: Moderator applications 2010
Post by: ninwa on December 14, 2010, 05:25:55 pm
Hey guys,
I promised I'd do this within the fortnight, and the new forum issues seem to have settled down a bit, so it's as good a time as any to put out a call for subforum moderator applications.

Also, I'd like to announce your new national moderators (for the time being): Mao, shinny, EvangelionZeta, TrueTears, Eriny, Ahmad and Fyrefly :)

We are asking for applications for the following:

- 5 maths/science/technology board mods;
- 2 English board mods;
- 1 LOTE board mod;
- 1 business board mod; and
- 2 arts/health/humanities board mods.

Please note that applications are for entire subforums. This does not mean you have to be good at every single maths/science/technology subject. But there will be no individual subject mods anymore.

I am not calling for state moderators at the moment, because the other forums aren't populated enough to warrant it. However, once the need arises, having experience as a subject moderator will definitely be an advantage.

Because I'm lazy I'm just going to quote the rules enwiabe made when he called for applications last year (obviously where he says "PM me" etc. you will now need to contact me, not him):

Here are the rules. If you do not follow these to the letter, I'm sorry to say that that will automatically disqualify you:

1) You must have at least 200 posts and have been a member for at least 2 months to apply. The reason being is that you must be an established member of the community to become a moderator. We don't want to hire anyone from off the street and put them in a position of responsibility! If you have less than 200 posts/2 months membership, PM me and I'll tell you if it's worth applying.

2) In order to apply, post a reply to this post according to the following format.

- Finishing/finished VCE. You can supply your study score if you want, but it is not necessary.
- Position(s) desired (in preferential order, please)

3) THE ABOVE INFORMATION IS ALL THAT IS NEEDED IN YOUR APPLICATION, NO MORE, NO LESS. POSTING ANYTHING MORE (e.g. talking yourself up)/LESS WILL RESULT IN DISQUALIFICATION OF YOUR APPLICATION.
Please post questions regarding these applications in General Site Discussion, and I hope to see as many applications as possible! :) Good luck.

Applications close a week from today (21 December 2010). Good luck :)

Are all applicants picked randomly? or the highest study scores in their field or word of mouth or even favouritism?

It'll be a joint decision between the national mods, enwiabe and me.
Basically it'll be based on frequency and quality of posts and maturity (study score also helps, but is not essential).

What is the workload like for a subforum moderator?

Heaps. You are expected to be online every second when you're awake, read every post and rate it on readability, usefulness and potential threat. You are then to submit a report on every thread and their progression, and then a daily update on psyche of each poster, including developing new profiles for new posters in your board. Failure to compile will mean we will strip of your rights, make you sign a non-disclosure form and torture you until you know who's your daddy.

(the workload is pretty light, you just have to pay some attention and stop bad things)

  That sounds like rather too much hard work for me. However, I'd be intrested in some sort of premium membership, maybe one which offers users the services of a personal grape-peeler.

What is the workload like for a subforum moderator?

Depends what you want to achieve as well. In general, the national mods will catch most of the blatant trolling and CoC violations and such. Your job is more to keep a closer eye on your specific sub-forum since the national mods can't and won't be viewing every single thread. After that, it's really up to you. Many subforum mods will write guides for their subjects, pre-exam tips and good luck messages etc. It's up to you how involved you want to get. Ensuring that your subforum is clean and tidy is the bare minimum though I guess.

Ninwa, I'll now defer the moderator application. Being the mod of the essay marking subforum and running it, will be enough for next year. ;)

I can envision that place being hell so have fun running it. Make sure you do a good job so it lessens our workload! :P

This... please work hard, so we don't have to.

*Laziest mod ever*

I challenge you to that title.!

By challenging me, you automatically lose.
For you see, I am too lazy to challenge someone and yet you are not, meaning I am more lazy than you, meaning I win.
If you really were the laziest mod you wouldn't have even bothered replying.

Can you please do it the way Venice used to choose their doge?

Quote
Whenever the time came to elect a new doge of Venice, an official went to pray in St. Mark’s Basilica, grabbed the first boy he could find in the piazza, and took him back to the ducal palace. The boy’s job was to draw lots to choose an electoral college from the members of Venice’s grand families, which was the first step in a performance that has been called tortuous, ridiculous, and profound. Here is how it went, more or less unchanged, for five hundred years, from 1268 until the end of the Venetian Republic.

Thirty electors were chosen by lot, and then a second lottery reduced them to nine, who nominated forty candidates in all, each of whom had to be approved by at least seven electors in order to pass to the next stage. The forty were pruned by lot to twelve, who nominated a total of twenty-five, who needed at least nine nominations each. The twenty-five were culled to nine, who picked an electoral college of forty-five, each with at least seven nominations. The forty-five became eleven, who chose a final college of forty-one. Each member proposed one candidate, all of whom were discussed and, if necessary, examined in person, whereupon each elector cast a vote for every candidate of whom he approved. The candidate with the most approvals was the winner, provided he had been endorsed by at least twenty-five of the forty-one.

It's how they voted, unnecessarily confusingly. It was a joke, don't know if you got it, my internet humour is poor
