Title: Top schools of 2010?
Post by: azngirl456 on December 15, 2010, 04:12:56 pm
Who wants to bet on which schools will be up at the top of the vce best performing schools list?

(before the paper comes out tomorrow)

I bet Mac.Rob hehehe

^ Yes she is. ;D

Since MHS didn't have any 99.95ers this year... I'll say:

1. MacRob
2. MGS
3. MHS

For mine it's:

1. Mac.Rob
2. Bialik College
3. MHS

My school should be somewhere in there... I'd say top 20.

2. a Jewish school
3. MHS - they didnt get any 99.95s

1. MacRob

If we're going for long shots... Yeshivah-Beth Rivkah Colleges in St Kilda East. That's my pick. That school came 5th in the state last year, they averaged a median subject score of 36.

This was last year's results. My school went down (again).

@ Ally, yes I am a Mac.Robbian. Wow congrats on bio and you're doing the azn 5

well, it's confirmed that Mac.Rob median ATAR (96.75) is definitely higher than MHS's median ATAR (95.15)

so i have a feeling it's quite safe here...unless a 'Mount Scopus' happens again this year

Apparently 13% of Mount Scopus's year 12 cohort attained scores over 99. Epic.

I read it was 17% at either Scotch or MGS last year.

My guess is pretty much the same as most:

1. MacRob
2. Mount Scopus
3. MHS

I don't think MGS would make it in the top 5 (possibly even top 10?).

Apparently 13% of Mount Scopus's year 12 cohort attained scores over 99. Epic.

Macrob: 15.9% over 99, 4 duces
still think theyll go first place xD

and as for 2nd place Mount Scopus, Bialik college, Yeshivah-Beth Rivkah College or Leibler Yavneh = small cohorts
private ones that should be considered - Ruyton Girls i reckon, others are hard to tell
 but GIRL SCHOOLS FTW! :D

you guys still got better than Scotch lol: "The median score was 90.35 (125 of the 249 boys scored 90.35 or above)."
and check out penleigh and essendons: "The median ATAR score at PEGS was 88.65, placing 50% of our students in the top 11% of the country"

Au contraire, they leave school on Friday at 1pm as Saturday is the sabbath for them, hence no school, no work, etc.
Mount Scopus is really close to my school, we went there on an Religious Education excursion last year. Got to see the synagogue and talk to some of the students there.

EDIT: @TrueTears My school's not first this year, we only had one 99.95, and median ATAR 92. Anyway, I don't think it's possible for my school to have VCE scores that high when a large portion of the really smart kids do IB, not VCE.

Maybe we should start a betting market?

1st place finisher:

MacRob - $1.10
MHS - $3
Bialik College - $5.50
Mount Scopus - $7
Korowa - $20
Scotch - $50
Any non-selective public school - $1001

Each way 1/2 odds.

Trifecta

MacRob-MHS-Bialik - $5
MacRob-Scopus-MHS - $13.50

etc.

The top schools will always be selective and Jewish ones.  Schools like Melbourne Grammar and Scotch get a lot of top scores, but because they:re pretty much open-entry, the median will naturally be lower.

64 actually better than what you would think.

For example my old school is ranked 54 (fairly crap considering how good the school is) and a vast majority of students achieve 90+ (the 90's club as they called it lol).

So i just think that it is very difficult to overtake other schools when you are within the top 70 for example... but obviously as you get to the 200+ ranked schools, jumping a few spots would be easier.

LOL I used to go to your school back in years 7 and 8, so you guys sort of have two. Well, not really, but still :P. Your school tends to attract a lot of bright students, but most of them end up leaving. One of the best students to have ever gone there was dux of Mac.Rob in year 10 and year 11, won a silver medal in the IBO and got 99.90 (despite achieving 4 raws of 50). There's also been a handful of 99.95ers who've left as well...it's been a bit of a brain drain, so I guess the school is trying to show that they can retain good students.

I don't like how the media always portrays Macrob having a higher score than MHS as evidence as girls are smarter than boys.

They never seem to understand that MHS accept way more students, hence they accept 'dumb' (not super smart, just smart) students. If MHS cut off 60 of their worst students, they'd be right up there

Plus there's always the jocks who couldn't care less about VCE and are planing on picking up a trade. And not to mention crazy traditions of compulsory singing everyday on the final weeks of school leading up to exams :P

I don't like how the media always portrays Macrob having a higher score than MHS as evidence as girls are smarter than boys.

I don't think they specifically target MHS, they just use the sheer number of single-sex girls schools against to the number of single sex boys schools to support the theory that girls are smarter.

Quote
Of the top 20 schools, 11 were girls', including MacRob, Beth Rivkah Ladies College, Loreto Mandeville Hall and Ivanhoe Girls Grammar.

Only three boys' schools made the top 20: Melbourne High, Melbourne Grammar and St Kevin's.

I vote my school....from the bottom. Probably tops from the bottom of the list! We got 4 kids with ATARs over 45.00 and rest of the 51 kids got LESS than 45.00. Beat that!! And only one kid got 81.00 but bombed out of ESL and can't meet the pre-req. WOW we're really GOOD!! ;D

My school went down about 15+ spots, though it's still on the first page. 29th. I think you're suppose to look on the left side of the numbers. xD

Type in "2010 vce school ranking" into Google, then you'll see the link. Worked for me second time round.

But did their ranking freefall- 2009 at 265 and 2010 at 410? I think our school would break any record! The worst performing school in all of Victoria. we didn't even have an english teacher who could teach the texts... our average sac mark for english was 10/50....beat that! Sorry if you're from Wodonga!!

@Sam:
Wow that's a shame. How did your school Dux go? they would at least have someone over 90.

Hahahah my school just gained 12 spots! From 422 to 410 LOL. Lowest school on VN?
We do get on average about 10 ppl over 90 though, even 1 or 2 over 99.
But due to being a fairly large cohort in the north west, majority of them are pure slackers which heavily drags down the numbers.
Got a better feeling about next years cohort. Out of all the 40s our school got (not many), only about a quarter were from the yr 12s LOL.

Souljette_93: Our duxes scrapped in at 92.00 one was a real 92 and the other got compensation because of a death of a parent. But as most ended up with low scores in English they don't meet the pre-req and are virtually stuffed. I got in because I refused to do the school's chosen texts and did Orwell instead- saved myself *phew* got SS 35 raw in Eng.
