Title: Moving to new server. Possible downtime.
Post by: enwiabe on December 15, 2010, 08:47:08 pm
Our traffic has now reached the level where we must upgrade our server once more. We're moving to a VPS and I have been told that doing so may result in the DNS being a bit screwy for a while and we may even fully go down at one point or another for a few minutes. You have been warned! :P

Also once we're on the new server, the occasional periodic dropouts we've been experiencing the past few weeks should fully cease :)

Should be happening over the next hour. Trying to do it while everyone is asleep... But apparently no one here does.

Btw, expect everything to break for a few minutes. Server paths are a little different on the new server... So some stuff is going to get screwed up in the transition. Easy fixes though.

We've officially moved to the new server.  Going to be tweaking things, so beware of breakages. However, please report anything major and anything that lasts more than a few minutes. We've moved to a new server structure as well as a new version of PHP... There's bound to be some errors.

Hello Mr CTO,

I've noticed:
- The 'quote' button to quote a particular post into Quick Reply doesn't work (gets stuck at the green 'loading' bar)
- The quick edit button at the bottom of a post doesn't work (gets stuck at the green 'loading' bar)
- Double clicking on a thread title in boards (not in the thread) to edit thread title doesn't work (gets stuck at the green 'loading' bar)

I would assume anything else that involves the green 'loading' bar won't work (which I'm is any editing functions that uses AJAX instead of loading a new page). Maybe a SQL/AJAX problem in the new version of PHP or server scripts?

Using Chrome and Safari.

I can safely say it's not a bandwidth/connection problem. Internet connection is ridiculously fast in my office (gigabit). But it seems like it's client-side now?

[just updated Chrome, same problem]

Me too.

Quick edit: Maybe it's not magic. Maybe it's our awesome CTO.

Still think it's cache. Can't think of anything that would cause it to happen. At least nothing I'm aware of *looks suspiciously at Dan*. I'll do some testing though, and keep an eye on it over the next few days.
