Title: Statement of Marks - Results Thread
Post by: luken93 on December 17, 2010, 12:54:12 pm
Anyone who wants to add to avoid "How many marks do I need for..." questions
This is a RESULTS THREAD only, not for discussion, can it please be left like the SS Results thread?

Or can Enwiabe make a "SoM Discussion" Topic in the Exams Discussion Board?

Business Management
A+ A+ A+

118/130 got me 47
A+ cutoff 103/130

Yea, it's the A+ cut off for the exam, i.e the minimum marks required for you to get an A+ grade on the exam

Is there a website that you can find A+ cut offs for all subjects?
If so, link me!
:)

OK to clear everything up

I ordered my statement of marks around 2 weeks before we received results (End of Nov)

I received it today (17/12), and it entailed:
- My marks for each question
- My overall mark
- The A+ Cutoff

I don't know whether it gave me the A+ cutoff because that was the region I was in, just like if a B+ exam Statement of Marks would have the B+ cutoff I'm not sure, but this is the reason why I know the extremely low A+ cutoff of Business Management.

The Grade Distributions ARE NOT out yet, but they should be shortly, so until then we won't know cutoffs until people begin to receive SoM, which was the reason for this thread, not to ask questions.   :D

This is a statement of study score of JDog; he told me to put it on because he ceebs :P

Biology:

GA1 = 135/150 (67.5/75) --> Standardised Score = 2.08                             (A+)
GA2 = 199/200 (194 before moderation) --> Standardised Score = 1.61         (A+)
GA3 = 134/150 (67/75)--> Standardised Score = 1.64                       (A+)

Study Score = 47

Small comment: Woah, the A+ cutoff for exam 2 must have been extremely high, like 64.5!

Maths Methods

GA1 = 98/100 (92 before moderation) --> Standardised Score = 1.58        A+
GA2 = 72/80 (36/40) --> Standardised Score = 1.30                              A
GA3 = 149/160 (74.5/80) --> Standardised Score = 1.80                        A+

Study Score = 43

Small comment: A+ cutoff for exam 1 probs 36.5, and A+ cutoff for exam 2 i'm guessing 66-67.

This means that the examiners DID give out consequential marks for the cone question? I recall you saying that you didn't get the answer and I also didn't get the answer but still managed my A+ for exam 1. o_O

Yeah

Part A 1/2 marks
Part B 1/1 mark
Part C 0.5/2 marks

I am not happy with this half mark rubbish.

Got at least 1 instance of it in both methods exams.

Edit:  Hmm, should I appeal for Question 2b on Methods exam 1?

Got 5/6 double weighted marks.  Am desperate to bump it up to a 40 SS and get guaranteed med at UoM.

Am fairly certain I got this question correct.

One higher SS anywhere and I get .90 ATAR and guaranteed med, and best of all no GAMSAT haha.

Isn't it the Inspection of Examination Script? If so it's on the Statement of Marks order form, you can order to have it re checked either at your school or at VCAA?

All the best mate, hopefully it works for you!

Nah, if you want a remark, the principal needs to approve it.

Would need to do it for methods and english, as they are bottom two.  If they go down, they won't affect my score.

Bloody English.  Each examiner have me a different mark on all of my pieces.

Anyone have any advice?

Like I said, all I need is a single SS higher.

I doubt you're going to get anywhere with methods thanks to the already screwed up marking scheme they've put in place (i.e. half marks all over the place). I'd try my luck with english. You'd only need to get 47 in english to get 99.90, even though it's in your bottom two?

Yeah, I know.  I don't like my English chances though, because basically, I'd be asking for an integer mark on all three.  Odds that 2/3 pieces or all of them going up is slim.

Edit:  Well I am 0.04 of an aggregate point off the 99.90 cut off.  So yeah, a higher SS even in an increment subject will get me over the line.

Seems to me that if there's discrepancies between the two methods markers it would be easier to appeal than English. But still, being a lower ss, I guess you're likely to need more exam marks to get an extra ss mark..

Yeah.  I reckon I can find 2 marks on maths methods exam 1.

The question where p=1/2, I can't see why a mark was taken there by one examiner.

And for the last question, it seems one examiner has given a consequential mark, and the other hasn't.

I recall seeing a document somewhere that says VCAA will give consequential marks for appropriate working and if the answer was realistic?
Title: Re: Statement of Marks - Results Thread
Post by: Stroodle on December 21, 2010, 07:02:16 pm
I'm not sure about the rules for consequentials (is anyone really?), but I'd definitely appeal the methods exams - you've got nothing to lose except a relatively small amount of cash.
As you probably suspect though, for the p=1/2 question, chances are that there may be a slight error in your working that the examiner that gave you full marks overlooked...

Thanks man, and it's wierd that it's so low still especialy with the county court question having 3 answers.
I hate it when i was reading through my SoM and I saw a spot where one examiner had taken a mark off but the other didn't :( I could've had 4 extra marks if they had been nicer. Eh, I can't complain though.

Got mine today finally.....

For legal:
116/120 (58/60)
Both SAC's scaled to 100
A+ cut-off 106

(it sucks because one examiner gave me 2/2 for the first question whilst the other gave 1/2, lost a mark on Q5 (2 after doubling) and one gave 10/10 for the last question whilst the other gave 9/10)
Can't think why my answer to the first question might be wrong

English:
Section A: 17/20 (8/10 & 9/10)
Section B: 14/20 (2x 7/10) I really thought this was my best essay
Section C: 17/20 (8/10 & 9/10)

Total 48/60
A+ cut off 47/60

Chemistry:
Exam: 134/164
A range 67/81 - 72/81

Yep. The premier's award for mathematics goes to the top 10 performers in Methods and Spesh combined (I'm not exactly sure how they do it. Maybe combine the raw scores?)

LOL What about further :O.... There isn't money involved in a premier's though? I thought it was just a medal and certificate and that's about it....

Mid 2011. Annoying I know! Everyone is over VCE by then. But oh well.

Umm it's basically just an award for the top 5 people for each subject (It's top ten for english and maths though, and there's other little differences - but yeah, overall it's top 5 for most subjects)...

I've heard you get a medal and a certificate. You go to Crown Palladium and get to shake the premier's hand while also getting a photo with him.

This is just from what I've been told from other people. Hopefully someone else on here has actual experiences and can give more details. I'm guessing quite a few VNers have gotten them, I know EZ got one for classics from what I remember..

You have a chance at a Business Management one :) I hope you get it!

Mine took a week to arrive.
Lost 2 marks on exam 2 (158/160); Full marks exam 1 (Methods)

Nice!
Btw you really lost 1 mark, not two; it's just that both examiners decided to take off the mark (unless you lost your 'two' marks on different questions?)
So take it as 79/80

@kyzoo: No, I know a person who did Methods and Spesh in different years (2008, 2009) and got a Premier's Award - Dana Ma?

I'm pretty sure they look at sacs too. Top 5 performers in the subject overall (exam/s + sacs) get the premier's award. So basically only people who got a 50 in business man are eligible considering there's like 30 or so 50s each year. So yes, it's the top five people who got a 50 for bus man. I know for something like ag hort you can get a 45 and still get a premier's because only like 3 people get higher than that each year.

And thanks. I'm gonna try to forget about it so that it'll just be a pleasant surprise if I do get one :)

Not expecting anything though, I can't believe I got a 50 in something - even thinking of premier's just makes me think "as if". Just achieving that has left me as content as one can be :D Anything extra is gonna be a bonus I reckon.

OK. I got my Statement of Marks for Biology and my Statement of Study Score for Methods:

Biology//

Exam 2: 72/75 (144/150)

[Exam 1 I got 68.5/75, and SACs I got either 199 or 200, based on JDog's statement]

Fullscored MC, lost 1 mark each on Q2b, Q5a and Q5b.
Hmm...OK

Methods//

GA1:  (SACs): 100/100 --> 100/100 (1.662115)
GA2:  Exam 1: 80/80    (1.649664)
GA3:  Exam 2: 160/160 (2.10113)

Rapt with Methods.

Yeah, we had people like the Premier's wife, some government people, some minor celebrities who I can't remember etc. rock up.  You also might get your photo with one of them instead of the Premier.

Double posting, but I'm bumping this thread since Statement of Marks seemed to have arrived today.

Mine were pretty surprising to an extent.  Japanese I got 86/100 for the oral (which surprised me, since the oral is meant to be easy to do well in), but got around 65/75 for the written exam, which brought me to my 42.  Also, I ended up dropping about 12-13 marks on exam 1 in Spesh - LOL.

English was probably the most interesting one.  I thought I'd lost marks because of my Richard III essay, but it turns out I got 20/20 for that.  However, I got 16/20 for Context (which surprised me, because I thought I did well in that section), and 15/20 on Language Analysis, which is seriously lols.

Also, I got 80/80 on the Literature exam, and 100/100 for both Unit 3 and Unit 4 SACs! =)

This is a statement of study score of JDog; he told me to put it on because he ceebs :P

Biology:

GA1 = 135/150 (67.5/75) --> Standardised Score = 2.08                             (A+)
GA2 = 199/200 (194 before moderation) --> Standardised Score = 1.61         (A+)
GA3 = 134/150 (67/75)--> Standardised Score = 1.64                       (A+)

Study Score = 47

Small comment: Woah, the A+ cutoff for exam 2 must have been extremely high, like 64.5!

Maths Methods

GA1 = 98/100 (92 before moderation) --> Standardised Score = 1.58        A+
GA2 = 72/80 (36/40) --> Standardised Score = 1.30                              A
GA3 = 149/160 (74.5/80) --> Standardised Score = 1.80                        A+

Study Score = 43

Small comment: A+ cutoff for exam 1 probs 36.5, and A+ cutoff for exam 2 i'm guessing 66-67.

Wow, amazing how you can lose so little marks in methods, yet so many  in bio...

Thanks! Yeah I'm not too worried, I'm that surprised to have gotten above 40 that I don't care :) I wasn't even in the top 5 in my cohort though, and lost a good 15-20 marks on SACs during the year.

I must've done pretty well on the English exam. I went to a pretty bad school where only 3 people out of around 160 other than myself got 40 or above and they got exactly 40, and I was ranked probably around 3rd or 4th for Unit 3 (95\100) and equal first with at least two others (or possibly equal second..or possibly equal first with 3 others) for unit 4 with 98\100 and I got 44 :)

Haha well done! I think I'm in a similar position. I was ranked probably not even in the top 30 in my cohort for sacs in english and my cohort is pretty bad at english we had like 8 people out of 300 get in the 40s so I'm worried to think of what my exam mark must have been to make up for it. I had A's GA 1 AND 2 :S I ordered a statement last week so hopefully it comes soon. Should be very interesting to see the scores considering I really disliked the pieces I wrote in the exam. I felt they were really rushed and all over the shop :\

Yeah, I am definitely not ranked in the top 5, and got a low A+ for GA1 and perhaps even a B+ in GA2. I am thinking that my exam scores kinda moderated my grade for GA2, in which I got an A for in the end. Can't wait to see the SOS and SOM... T.T

Got mine today, really disappointed. For English(ESL),

Text(A Man for All Seasons)= 18/20          40%
Context(Rugmaker)= 19/20                      30%
Analysis
Sec A Note Form, 12/20...Jesus...             15%
Sec B Lang Analysis, 17/20                       15%

345/400 = 86.25% A+, A+ grade range is 297->400

GA 1 Final
       100%              A+
GA 2 Final
        91%               A,   Err shouldn't that be an A+, I checked the 2008 graded distribution, A+ range was 88% so.... yeah

GA 3 Final
        345                A+

   GRADED ASSESSMENT
Coursework Unit 3
Coursework Unit 4
Written Examination
   SCORE (SCHOOL)

 -
   SCORE (FINAL)

   STANDARDISED SCORE
1.658129

WEIGHTED TOTAL
   WEIGHTING X STANDARDISED SCORE
0.414532

Is there some sort of correlation of Standardised Score -> %

English statement was much better than I expected, but at the same time makes me sad about what I would have gotten with higher sac scores and a better cohort :(

Section A: Text Response (Into Thin Air) - 9.5/10 (19/20)

Section B: Context (Imaginative Landscape) - 10/10 (20/20)

Section C: Language Analysis - 8/10 (16/20)

Exam score : 27.5/30 or 55/60 after doubling.

Anyone know what study score that would have gotten with high sac marks? Just out of curiosity...

In the end, A A A+ = 42 is what I got. Still happy with it, but damn, that exam mark makes me wonder what could have been!

UNIT 4: 64-> 70

Spesh B+, A, A+ = 36

SACs 85->75 ( :tickedoff: )

WTF? had no idea spesh would be THAT bad..

Physics A, A+, A+ = 41

SACs 186->190

Exam 1: 79/90

Exam 2: 86.5/90

Chem A+, A, A+ = 44

SACs 191->182 ( :tickedoff: )

Exam 1: 74/75

Exam 2: 80/82

As I had suspected, exams were good enough for a 49 or 50, sigh...

Lit B, B+, B+ = 31 ;)

UNIT 3: 66-> 74

UNIT 4: 66-> 79

Exam: 56/80 (lowest B+)

Hamlet - 27/40

+ 1 :'(  I was hoping it wasn't like that. Basically, get rank 1 in a crappy school or suffer the consequences.

Although if I can get into my uni course I couldn't really care less about VCE scores anymore.. However, I still feel sorry for the rest of the people still going through the VCE system in a bad school. They don't have much back up if they don't have the highest sac ranking and that really does suck..

Nothing I can do now... I'm debating telling the others in my class/my teacher I don't really see any good coming from it. Thoughts anyone?

Scary to think that I actually could have gotten ~43 (If I'd gotten 9 for context. It was easily my best section.. In the exam though I had only a little over 30 minutes to complete the whole piece. Ended up two pages - two paragraphs+intro+conc. But I had to cut down on the word count where I could to save time. The area which suffered most was the linkage - which, of course, is most important in context.. So the essay must've seemed less relevant to the topic and less coherent thus lowering my mark [in case you were wondering why I didn't get 5-6 for the semi-completed piece which is a natural assumption given my claim of being at a 9-standard])

Yep, I was rank 3 actually.. 95.5% in SACs. First rank got 98% (but As in exams) second rank 96-97ish (A and A+ in exams).. they both got 39 raw.

Well MAtty, the achievement is that you powned the exam, so congratulations on that! :D

Although, I know how badly SACs can hurt..

IT Applications:
GA 1: 74% -----> 86%
GA 2: 75% ------> 86%
GA 3: 150/180 (A+)
SS: 39
Some guy here got 135/180 and ended up with an SS of 42...

I was rank 3 or 4, in a cohort of 10. Basically our teacher turned out practice SACs into real SACs, let us take them home (and thus no one ever knew what mistakes we made, but the dropkicks collaborated) etc.
RAnk #1 managed an A+, pulled out a 42 (so i presume it was low) Rank#2 must have gotten an A, he got 36, rank#3 was a complete dropkick, collab'd with friends to get top in SAC, he probs got <25.

That really sucks; I would personally scrap SACs altogether and have all assessment externally assessed. Perhaps for sciences (chem especially) a practical exam like in the UK A Levels? And if they wanted to make sure that assessment isn't 100% for one particular exam - you could have twice the number of exams that we already have - problem is, that's quite strenuous...although IB has like 3 papers for chem at the same exam period...

 Basically, get rank 1 in a crappy school or suffer the consequences.

Have to confess, that was the story of my VCE life. If I wasn't rank 1 or rank 2 I would've died.
