This could give some motivation to kick start your work? ;)
-
I've started writing down notes for Chem for the past week and a bit; just an hour here and there really adds up. Then I'm going to get started on prep. for Japanese Oral and then reading through the English texts. ^^
-
awesome! :) 99 here it comes ;]
-
I'd recommend against preparing too intensely at this stage still - starting at Jan is a good time. All I did last year began around that point.
-
Yea all I'm doing is reading my texts, got to be refreshed for 2011
-
holiday homework..
i feel like theres nothing else to do, but i guess thats just me being antisocial (all my friends are overseas) :(...
-
Yeah, I'm doing some holiday homework for Methods, plus maybe reading up and trying other parts of the course (hoping to finish the textbook - but not in detail - during the summer).
Also doing some light reading up for all my other subjects, and I plan to read my texts for Lit, but haven't done that yet.
-
I haven't started anything just yet.. waiting until January.
-
Done the first two chapters of Further Maths in like 3 hours. Now to complete 5 chapters of methods :/
-
done the first chapter (4 dotpoints on the study design) of economics and started to read Slaughterhouse 5. I'm gonna realy start after christmas.
beware the burnout.
-
starting early is good...especially if you have to read and analyse novels (which tend to be ones that take a while to get through)
collecting resources is another fun thing you could do (like notes etc...)
-

Agreed.
I learnt the chemistry course in december, and since I left anything else until after a few weeks off over new years and relaxing in jan/going overseas, I had forgotten quite a bit of all that fresh knowledge.
Should have just learnt it in Jan!
-
I've started reading my English texts, made some Chem notes and I'm halfway through the Unit 3 Legal course.
Start early to reduce your workload throughout the year.
-
VCE - no. Maths - heaps :)
You sound like you're becoming the next TT o_O.
As for me... I've only read one novel for the time being. :S
-
I think the feeling that I'm not repeating Methods is enough to motivate me to do holiday homework - humanities ftw! I'm hopefully going to start on the Legal and BM work, so long as the bookstore gets the books in. ==

new study design? its the same with psych as well. I wished publishing companies would hurry up and print textbooks before the year starts
-
Read one of my English books, wrote out some system cards for EL, finished the assigned questions for Philosophy, really light stuff just for the moment.
Probably try and really get stuck in after Christmas.
-
Right now, all I've done is a couple of chapters worth of questions from my Chemistry and Physics books.
Eventually I'll re-read my English novels, read the new novel when I get it and watch the new film text.
As far as Accounting and Economics goes, nothing so far but I will make a start on them soon.
-
yeah light stuff same here for me.
reading just for now and printing exams today! then i should be able to work from there. I have to buy display folders for resources and exam papers one for each subject! :) and i shall do some stationary shopping haha oh what fun! :D new stuff (Y)
-
Yeah i did all the hw last week, doing methods course atm. Probs read the texts after it then do chem/jap

Who needs to print off exams when everything's electronic these days! you could be saving the environment instead!
I'm poor I care about the environment too much, so I'll just keep using my stuff from last year. :D
-
I've done the first couple of chapters for chem, accounting and further. I've also read all my english texts. Really need to start tackling methods haha

im cheap, so I sold all my books :) and i reuse all my display folders, etc. so im using my newly bought/given second hand books.
-
hehe well textbooks are quite expensive if you buy them all brand new!! ive got mostly second hand ones only buying one or two brand new. saves me (saves my mum :P) a few hundred dollars.

I'm the same.
Unless I really need a new textbook (i.e. new study design), then I'll buy mine second-hand from school. It's cheaper than retail and in most cases, still in good condition.

in general, i buy all my second hand, even if theres a new edition. I find that depending on which subject it is, there is only a few minor changes, or heck, for heinmann's maths books.. a new edition basically meant a different cover, a few changes to solutions, and different pictures. fantastic.
anyway, at the moment im meant to be doing my holiday homework; but as you can see im procrastinating :) Im planning to do a few practice exams, read macbeth.... which is one of the set texts this year, find a detailed study topic for chinese... and maybe a chapter out of every book.

Englang: "finished" AOS1; overviewing AOS2, then plan to really knuckle down and get AOS1 concrete + some holiday hw
Chem: nearly finished AOS 1 (chapters 2, 3, 4, 5, 6), just one more homework set to do
Physics: finished chapters 1,2, need only do chapter 3 to finish Motion
German: holiday homework + some writing here, some writing there, some listening
Spesh: only up to chapter 2 :S
-
lol thushan 'Spesh: only up to chapter 2 :S' i havent even completed chapter 1 and i didnt do gma.... xD

thushan, how much are you aiming to do for Spesh? I dunno whether I should go ahead much, I've only done chapter 11, but I see no use unless I can finished a whole Unit? By that I mean I wanna finish the whole of nit 3 Chem, otherwise you gotta make the choice to concurrently learn both old stuff and new stuff when you reach the end of the Unit?
Once again, very nice scores haha
-
English - Just reading for now :(
Spesh - Chapter 2 of Essentials
Methods - Done about 1/4 of book so far (so boring)
Chem - Yet to start (need to though)
Physics - Still going over yr 11 stuff I didn't ace (maybe one week left)
Will work a a bit harder after Ashes is over ;)
Wow, you're so prepared. Change that to:
2011:
English Language 3/4 (50), Chemistry 3/4 (50), Physics 3/4 (50), Specialist Maths 3/4 (50), German 3/4 (50)
If there's anyone who can get 7 50s, you're the one to do it! :)
7 50s and a 5.5 in uni chem ;)

@AzureBlue, swarley and pi: Get real!!! OK fine, it is possible for me to 50 one or more of physics, chem and spesh. Hate to disappoiint you, but to 50 englang would be extremely difficult for me, but I guess it's possible (maybe a 71-72/75 in the exam would do it?) and to 50 german is definitely out of my scope, seriously. Mark my words, I'd be struggling to get a 40.
@luken: Spesh - I wouldn't separate spesh into "unit 3" and "unit 4" because it's a maths subject with no two clear "units." I would say go through as much of the textbook as you can, and use VCEnotes or others for help.
Chem - just get the whole thing over and done with! It does take a while for the concepts to be processed by your brain.
OK, I guess my real aims are straight 50s, but putting that on sig would sound cocky, but here are my most likely scores:
Englang - 45 (47)
Spesh - 48 (51) --> just two careless mistakes will do that
Chem - 49 (49.4) --> will lose a mark somewhere
Physics - 43 (45) --> if fuzzylogic can't get over 43...
German - 39 (47) --> scaling saves me here...
UniChem - 5.5? --> i'd better hope so
Agg: 208.4
Hold on - that gets me 99.95...surely this can't be right
Moderator action: removed real name, sorry for the inconvenience
-
OK let's try that again:
EngLang - 43 (44)
Spesh - 45 (50)
Chem - 46 (48)
Phys - 43 (45)
German - 35 (43)
Unichem - 5.5
Agg: 204.3
ATAR: 99.85
That's more like it.
@AzureBlue: You're a maths genius and you're capable of taking two Englishes!? That's seriously awesome - you're well-rounded!
-
Fair enough.
Statistically dodgy? What do you mean?
-
'Mark my words, I'd be struggling to get a 40.'
We shall see when results come out next year! :P
-
I agree with VCE physics scoring system being a bit dodgy. Many capable students do physics and yet the scaling is not even about the same as chem or methods. :S
-
i feel the competition now ahaha and motivation :D is it just me? :P
-
Hey now now, kyzoo got a 50 in Physics, surely this means thushan can!
99.95 for sure for you
-
OK guys. I'll go for the 7 50s and the 5.5. Updated my sig.
Now, time to put the pedal on the metal :D
Thanks for your encouragement guys!!! Will give you the credit should I achieve this!
-
Man this is going to be EPIC!!!! Good Luck! :D

No. Romperait will definitely be dux 2011.
Challenge is on...The best of MGS vs the "best" of Scotch.

Alternatively, you could have more than 1 dux - 2 "duces".
I thought someone was going to make that poll already - who they predict will be "dux" in 2011.

nominate people and put in a description about them lol

maybe you can start it lol
There are so many users on here that I'd probably miss out a few people, and you'll always get those people who don't regularly post on VN and then suddenly appear with 99.95 at the end of the year.
-
yeah dont bother then lol
-
I'm calling this Thushan guy to get 5 50's
-
If someone wants to do it; here is the one which was made this year. Get TT to do it again. =p

Same. I'll be 2 out of 2 if Thushan gets dux next year, I voted appianway this year and she got it. =D

Glad you wrote '"best" of scotch" with the word 'best' in double quotation marks, because I am not the best of scotch. I came 2nd in my year level; my friend, who came 1st, would be the best of scotch. He also got 50 in Methods and a 47 raw in Chinese SL. Scotchies like JDog would know who I am talking about.
Damn GPA :P (inside joke, directed at scotchies)

i dont see why it can not change next year? even so.. u guys both might end up with 99.95 anyway :)

I put forward Burberry as the MHS representative for 99.95 contention

Haha, now I'm sitting here thinking - is (s)he being genuine or sarcastic? :P If I showed arrogance just then - sorry!
Damn electronic communication; you cannot discern sarcasm easily and you're scared that you will assume wrong
Note for EngLang people: this can be an example you can put in a SAC or exam, but without the names - we like to remain anonymous in your essays :P
-
I put forward Burberry as the MHS representative for 99.95 contention
+1
-
Thushan will those study score aims remain there for the rest of 2010-2011, well pretty much until results?
-
No. Every mark I drop for a subject I will deduct 1 from my study score.
-
So if you drop a mark in a SAC you will reduce your study score by one? Or if you lose a mark in the mid year/end of year exams?
-
i wouldnt say sacs....
-
OK. Every exam mark (doubled mark, so every possible half-mark), and every SAC rank I drop.
-
competition of 2011
Thushan vs. M li
to a lesser extent
myself vs. gooders. vs scotty.
-
You can also add:
arthur, mike b., edwin, nigel, "rench", karklins, tim,....
We have a strong year level JDog!
-
Shite imagine if scotch have 5+ students with 99.95 :O
-
yeah year12 2011 are a pretty smart bunch, comparing my year level to the others at my school..
-
haha which school are you?
-
nowhere special -___-
but @santa maria college :P
-
Shite imagine if scotch have 5+ students with 99.95 :O
Alright, forget about Romperait vs thushan. Scotch vs MGS - number of 99.95s.
Just note that MGS has had multiple years with over 5 99.95s and next year is considered their golden year (as I have heard). I've been looking through their Year 11 scores and it's rather scary.
Slightly off-topic, six of the seven duxes from my school in 2009 have ads on this site IIRC. :3
Any ideas on how many your school is looking at getting this year?
I'm guessing two to four - doubt we'll match last year.
How about next year? :P
Around the same as last year (five and above) - incredible year level.

We have one kid like thushan, he got 50 in Methods and Accounting this year. We had like ~12 kids get 50's in their respective 3/4 subject. Watch out for a guy called "Wayne Cheung", that kid's a NERD at my school - he got 50 for Methods this year. Apparently, he was doing Specialist Maths in Year 9 or the equivalent of it. =D
-
theres just as many smart people as there is dumb people... i see it as a bell curve lols

Woah - hey he's in my class for chem summer school!
LOL that's twice as good as us! Scotch had only 6-7 Year 11 50s, but 4 of them were for methods - all in my class too!
-
which summer schools u going to guys? im going to neap for chem and tsfx for pe (Y)
-
Woah - hey he's in my class for chem summer school!
Are you two the teachers there?
-
oh haha sorry I didn't mean TSFX or NEAP summer schools, i meant chem olympiad summer school :S
@LOL pi, NO. I (and maybe Wayne) am clueless when it comes to chem olympiads. OK NQEs are one thing, but I spent 20 minutes looking at a final selection exam going WTF. Hopefully I could do these once summer school is over...

I gather this is the Science Summer School at Monash, based on the various science national qualifying exams...
EDIT: Beaten by the man himself.
-
OHHHH haha nice
-
C. Lu already a study score off the pace..
-
Endorsement: VU has exam revision lectures, and Chem is taken by Neale Peters - he's amazing.
-
Mr peters? does he do those lectures?
i might have a look then
-
yeah, he does
and i think we have a 2/4 or 2/5 chance of getting him next year
let's see - peters, peters (for JJJ), hill, pallot, (sanders?)
-
Reinforcing this MGS vs Scotch competition by saying that from what I gather, both schools have incredible 2011 cohorts.
@C. Lu, not sure why he was mentioned, but he did pretty much zero work for both of his 3/4 subjects, so a 49 and a 46 were pretty good all things considered.
-
True. He's got more brains than James, and James got a 2400 SAT
-

Did you go to TSFX for biology?

Because he doesn't care about VCE - his SAT score is already enough for him to get into any Australian Uni he wants, and I think he's not applying to anywhere in Australia anyway.

Is there something wrong with the Lu family? Or are they simply just freaks of nature?
Oh and I'll enter the Scotch vs MGS vs Melb High race, I'll be the entrant for Padua hahahahha
just joking I've got no chance against you guys

Haha they must be!
Says you, Mr 99.85 haha
What rank was 99.85 in MGS btw? You'd be the highest in history at ours!
Wow they must have some obscure discussions over the dinner table haha
-
Yup, that's the one.
He's smarter than James if you ask me, and EZ's description of him doing no work whatsoever is apt.
-
Yup, that's the one.

Disagree with blatantly saying that he's "smarter" than James. He's clearly better at maths and perhaps abstract concepts, but I'd say James was the better humanities student, and clearly the better writer of the two.
-
who are these brothers? why are they so popular lol?

I've heard this rumour going round that EZ and this Colin person go to the same school.
I don't think it's really necessary to judge who is better between them. Why don't you just agree that they're both pro? :P

They do. But we were talking about Colin vs James, not Colin vs EZ.
Colin is James' brother, just to clarify.

But I hear that Colin is incomparable to a kid called James Sega who destroys Colin overall. He's obviously not as good in mathematics, but he achieves much higher in all other studies.
-
They do. But we were talking about Colin vs James, not Colin vs EZ.
Colin is James' brother, just to clarify.
I'm assuming his first comment was sarcasm, for a number of reasons. :p
I know @ Colin's writing because I've actually read it. >.> Don't quote me on this, but I think Colin would normally say something like "James is better at compuational maths" as well.
Also this is going rather off-topic, just saying.
-

Just to clarify, both Colin and James have been in the same school as EZ at different points.
Edit: EZ got to it before me. :o

I'd recommend against preparing too intensely at this stage still - starting at Jan is a good time. All I did last year began around that point.
+1 I'm yet to do any study atm, I'll be starting in Jan as I'm busy with other things

Hello, this is Colin Lu.
I wouldn't normally visit this site, but someone told me about this thread, and though there aren't many people here, I feel like posting a response. I also suggest checking out every post on my website, http://organisation341.wordpress.com, because all of them are really good.
The things I care about are probably very different to the things a normal person cares about. I care only about skill, friendship, "strict good" (ie. freedom), and something that I'll just call "enjoyment" for the purposes of this short post. Nothing else matters to me (though I probably missed something) unless it's a means to get any of these things.
I'm not superhuman, but I think I understand skill better than basically everyone else (I probably should after writing about 10,000 words relating to it). There's nothing intrinsically great about being really intelligent (ie. really good at becoming skilled), and there's no reason in particular to care about how skilled you are at things. In my case, of course, I do care about intelligence, but I don't think most people really know what this means. A person actually interested in skill should really be interested in being skilful at mathematics, or good at writing, as opposed to just doing well in maths or English subjects at school, and could easily be skilled in areas that aren’t even really related to school at all. This extremely important distinction is the reason why I consider myself to be one of the only people who actually cares about skill. For the people who go to my school, my position should become clearer with the claim that Tyler Aitken is the second smartest student currently at MGS. His opinions are really solid (without him even expending effort to think them up), and he is better than almost everyone else at various games. It's likely that no one else will really recognise how smart he is. I am probably the only person who holds this view.
With a proper idea of intelligence in mind, it should be pretty clear that performance in school or VCE isn’t proportional to intelligence, and often isn’t even very closely related at all. For me, actual legitimate difficulty in school subjects is almost zero, and any apparent difficulty is just bogus. As an example, I have a great deal of interest in mathematics and you can surely count the number of people still in high school (in Australia) that are better than me on your fingers. Almost 100 per cent of the “difficulty” in Mathematical Methods for me comes from managing to stay awake in boring exams, reading about the silly marking schemes and such, figuring out how to use those bogus calculators, and avoiding mistakes that could potentially be caused by my extreme indifference. I could consider an individual (call him A) who is completely outclassed by B in mathematics, who I in turn completely destroy, and person A could be a master of the actual mathematical component of the course. Indeed, such a person might have a decent chance of beating me in the course, even if only because he’d be more awake to check his own errors. To varying extents, this applies to me in every course – being completely honest, I literally cannot remember the last time I actually didn’t know the answer, or actually didn’t know how to respond to a prompt on a school assessment.
With this in mind, VCE has zero direct value to one only interested in skill, because it simply isn’t a decent reflection of skill – my interest in it could only possibly be to use it as a means to get into the university I want to get into, and here it plays a fairly indirect role, considering my preferences.
I have no insecurities about my own skill, and due to this, I don’t care about apparent credentials (like VCE) all that much. I spend almost no time on actually practicing anything relating to school because I really don’t need to in order to top school assessments. Due to this, I have probably seen more films, played more video games (especially story based ones), chatted with a wider range of people, read more, and written more than basically everyone else in high school (I expect individuals to be able to exceed me in no more than one of these areas), simply because I prefer to spend all my time on doing things I enjoy for their own sake. If I care about and enjoy something enough to practice (which happens unfortunately rarely), I tend to get very good (ie. one of the best in the world, regardless of age). See: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-IsJV0pUPc. When I’m not really practicing, I still manage to top the country (or get very close) in a lot of science and maths competitions (and qualify for a bunch of olympiad summer schools (this makes this post on-topic)). Regarding writing, I don't believe anyone else could possibly write a lot of the stuff featured on my site, James included, and not just because no one else would think of a lot of it - it's actually legitimately hard to write. Given how vague and arbitrary the typical criterion for judging writing is, I don't consider it much of an area of skill, but it's clearly pretty important, and I consider myself very good at it.
If anyone is wondering, I know James pretty well, and I claim that he isn’t nearly as intelligent as I am. I consider the area of competitive games (I run an unorthodox definition of competitive games though, so you should probably check out my site to know exactly what I mean) to be pretty important in gauging how intelligent one is, and can’t even really imagine James or a lot of the other people who do well in standardised testing being all that great at many competitive games. That said, he’s pretty good at a lot of stuff (with notable exceptions, like philosophy), and can practice when he doesn’t directly care – as I would say, he has a very useful ability to tolerate the “bogus” of a system such as VCE and work regardless (it’s very likely that he did way more work than I'm doing). To what someone else said, our parents are nothing like us and didn’t do nearly as well when they were our age (they’re still really great people though :).
None of this is to say that doing well in VCE isn’t important for a lot of people here, and obviously, not caring and doing little work is generally a bad idea – don’t try it because you’ll probably get completely wrecked.
If anyone still has any questions then they should ask them in response (I’ll probably answer the first few).
im reading your post and have yet to finish but so far i can't agree with you more about your views on intelligence! On a final note, welcome to AN! :)

That is the most pretentious thing I have ever read.
I think it's a joke.

I'm sure this Colin guy is a pure genius and everything, but yeah, that little essay was just slightly too ostentatious.. for my liking, anyway.
EDIT: Aren't Colin and James brothers?! From reading the above post, it seems as though they aren't?

One word comes to mind: cocky.
Good for you if you're a "genius", but no need to flaunt it.
EDIT: not directed at you of course, Andrew :P

This seemed very arrogant and pompous to me.

mmm..... i dont get whats all the deal with colin and james :S sorry couldnt be bothered reading previous posts..

I'm hoping it's real actually.

Look at Andrew using big words, I think after he became essay submission and marker moderator he felt the need to flaunt his talent ;)

Before anyone accuses Colin of arrogance, I need to say that he is an extremely frank person. If he is smarter than everyone else, he'll say that.
Edit: Ahh, too late.
I know Colin personally; he is not an arrogant character as such, he is simply extremely frank about things.
And this is definitely not a troll; Colin MSNed me as soon as he finished writing this.
-
^ I'm fairly positive that was a genuine post.
Yeh...I hang out with him all the time at school; this is how he speaks.
But cmon...it's hilarious. I guess I'm just used to it, but he's a pretty awesome and decent person when you get to know him.
Edit: What Thushan said...

I'm sure he's a great guy once you get to know him, but the difference between frank and arrogant is very subjective. 90% of people would see that as arrogant.
-

This seemed very arrogant and pompous to me.
Nah, it's only arrogant and pompous from our perspective. It might be hard to understand, but I don't think it's really arrogance on Colin's part - it's more a fact of his world, like how we consider an apple to be a fruit. Likewise it's his mini-essay is only pretentious from our perspective and not his.
I'm hoping it's real actually.
If it's a troll, that means some random typed that whole thing up for no reason, in which case: YOU NEED TO GET LAID.

Yeah, I did. It's basically just his opinion on things, over and over again.
Not a bad read, but not exactly interesting either.
-
Let's hope it's not a virus!
-
Yeah, I did! How do you know?
Haha I knew a thushan back in junior campus who was moving to Scotch College...now, who am I? :P
It's real =/ Colin has said stuff like this to me in the past.
He still needs to get laid.
I can guarantee that there are people out there that are better than him at certain things, he should show some humility.
Also, if he is so smart, any offensive statements he has made were most likely intentional..
-
No;
Back to Colin - from the piece itself, that was blatantly arrogant - from our perspective.
But a knowingly arrogant person would be a lot more subtle about it, because they would know that people look down on arrogance (rightfully too!). To me this piece is way too frank and blatant to stem from Colin's apparent arrogance. I'll say this though; he is somewhat unaware of these...pragmatics so he would call a mentally ill person a 'retard' and so on - euphemism is not in his vocabulary
Edit: so I don't say he's arrogant in the sense he wants to put people down because he's 'better' than them; he'll just state the facts. So when reading/listening to him, take the words as they are and disregard what he could be implying - because Colin never implies.
-
oh come on guys; he is just speaking truthfully about the matter of things, but i think Colin is taking this maturely :)
-
Yeah, I did! How do you know?

Pretty much what Thushan says. Furthermore, Colin knows that people are better than him at certain things - he just also happens to know that he's better than most people at many things too.
Just backing up what pretty much everyone who knows Colin is saying - as I was telling him on MSN after he told me he was confused about people calling him pretentious, you just need to understand his mode of thinking. Live on the same wavelength, if you will.
-
I think Collin's like Sheldon of Big Bang Theory, in the sense that he struggles to show emotion or sense it and is obnoxious
-
colin dont take it to heart
-
I think Collin's like Sheldon of Big Bang Theory, in the sense that he struggles to show emotion or sense it and is obnoxious
obnoxious is a bit strong, isnt it?
-
Alright, I'm willing to accept that.
But I hope Colin doesn't expect for people to live on his 'wavelength' wherever he goes. The onus is on him to learn what's socially acceptable to say and what's not.
The same way Usain Bolt wouldn't go up to paraplegics and tell them how superior he is at running, expecting them to understand where he is coming from.
-

Agreed.
Whilst Thushan and EZ would have this issue to a lesser extent, being around Colin all the time can make you feel pretty small a lot of the time. However, you learn to understand him and how he thinks and you just live with it and know he isn't intentionally trying to offend you; he actually has a really good heart.
I've seen on many occassions when he's "bullied" a kid, trash talking and such, but once we point it out to him, he immediately seeks out to apologise.

Hey everyone. I can see why people might think my post was obnoxious or arrogant or whatever (namely, because it is), but its content is basically all legitimate. The reason why it even exists is that I get annoyed at various comments that people make about me, so I'd say it's somewhat justified.
That said, I don't like being seen as pretentious or ostentatious, and I'm basically just relaxed and hilarious in person. Please don't judge me ;)

Yeah I guess I can tolerate that, lol. Just a tip, it's taken some explaning for me to get your point of view. In real life, if you say that to someone who gave it their all and fell short of the 75 they needed for their course, you better hope you're as good at boxing as you are at maths.
And thushan heres a clue:
I'm a right-handed outswinging(to the right hander) opening bowler who ripped your stumps out of the ground in an under 14s game. :P I can still hear the noise of it haha.

Yep agreed initially your post was a bit iffy, however other users vouching for how genuine you are i understand how your post sounded as it did. :)
-
No;
Back to Colin - from the piece itself, that was blatantly arrogant - from our perspective.
Hold on, are you saying that I am also arrogant? :(
Or that I experience being around Colin?
No I'm saying that you're awesome to the extent of not feeling as inferior to him as I do.
Ahahaha, whilst I agree in the sense that I have this issue to a lesser extent, I wouldn't say it's because I'm "awesome" enough to not feel inferior to Colin. Colin is (much?) better than me at most of the things that I'm meant to be good at. In all seriousness, I think I deal well with Colin because I spent a whole year talking to James on MSN. >.>
On another note, to be honest I see talking to frank people like Colin as beneficial for one's character growth. It's better to have an objective understanding of how things really are: as I said before, Colin is definitely better than me at most of my passions, but to be able to understand this without trying to cover it up is, as I see it, a sort of "enlightenment". As a result, I know exactly where I stand: I'm more confident in many things because I can objectively tell that I posess a decent level of skill/training in that particular area, and at the same time, I can acknowledge people as my superior.

Thanks Pixon!
But all the same, I do feel inferior to him - especially in maths camp when he blasts everyone.
Colin: Don't beat yourself up for this. We were too judgemental...and now we understand that you are not a bad person at all, and that you don't want to hurt anyone. All I have to say is just be careful of what you say, because people can take it the wrong way. Anyway, you have friends here who know you well, and (as you can see) they are explaining that you don't mean malice.

Get his 'head' of things you know loosen the tension, that's not going to far at all ;)

Ahh bomb, I remember. I know who you are.
How's things? How did you and MPSC go in VCE (apart from your ATAR which is on your sig) :P
-
lol how the hell did we get so off topic?? ;D
-
As bomb said he needs to get laid, whether it's a ten dollar me love you long time sucky sucky or just a good old browse on the net
Totally inappropriate mate

i think it started with a guy who presented himself as a very capable person achieving 99.95.. and it sorta grew from there? but anyhow i think i might sleep now x.x such drama today ... lol

This whole thread is inappropriate mate!
-
@thushan nah, Tim does all the owning at maths these days :P
@bomb in person I rarely talk about how good anyone is at anything, and of course it'd be ridiculous to say this kind of stuff to the wrong person in real life

then maybe you sholudnt waste your time here zzz :idiot2:

Back on topic: Has anyone made much progress on their hw/studies??
Yes, I have: Today I concentrated on English Language, and I have to say, it is the most awesome subject I did, except biology!
When you read the stuff, read various books and opinions and write down notes (from the book, and your analysis and thoughts) you see society in a whole new perspective, and you can understand society simply based on how they used language.
That's what I learnt today, and to me that's more valuable to me than learning the course. I cannot wait to write essays on English Language, because I can then express my thoughts on a subject that I really like and know about.
A small example: the fact that Australians are starting to move away from the "posh" accent displays that we are becoming more of a classless society (that's the crux, it's more complicated than that, and takes a lot of explaining)

I enjoyed bagging Colin :(

Awww i wish english was that intresting :(
Ill finish off calulus for methods tomorrow, and might start probability.

It's addictive even when you have better things to do. Although some might say there aren't many things better than being on VN. ;) (although I don't really believe that. I just think the internet is addictive)

We're on VN a lot because (although we may not realise it) we don't want to be alone. We want company. We humans are social animals. We want each other. We want to know that other people care about us, that other people are concerned about us. We want to assure ourselves that we belong in this world. That, to me, is the reason why VN, MSN, FB and the like are so addictive.

damn right I'm on, I'm really interested to see what everyone is up to

We'd also like to think that people care about what happens during our day, hence FB statuses and Twitter are so popular.

No need to cram, guys! I did basically nothing over the holidays because I went to France and then to olympiad (with enough time to unpack but not enough to get over jet lag in between the two :P), and it all worked out OK, despite my stressing. If you do too much, you'll burn out! Try and relax a little now.

That's irrelevant - he's calling himself a 'noob' when he clearly isn't one!

Haha, we're not cramming...we're learning ahead!
I have six (seven if you count olympiad) subjects to tackle this year, I need to get ahead! Otherwise I will die
And anyway, it's good to keep the momentum going
Finished chapter 2 physics, up to chapter 3...appianway should be happy :P

lol which bit - 'otherwise i would die' or 'momentum?'
Funny I use the word, I was doing physics half an hour ago :P
-
Hmmm it gives me confidence that you, the legendary thushan, thinks its good to get ahead haha
And I need to do it now, as a weak cohort moves through the coursework vveeerrrryyy slow, so if I don't get it done now, it would mean that we may not even finish the course by the time exams are here, which is definitely a scary thought!
-
Haha thanks for the compliment! - but I'm overrated. Just read Colin's post in this thread (a few pages back) and that should explain everything
But yeah, take the initiative!
-
I'm noob at maths :P)
BS you got 50 in methods!
I would maintain that such a fact doesn't necessarily make my comment incorrect; you only have to re-read Colin's post to understand that (especially in regards to a subject as silly as methods). However, my point is that I'm very far behind on any work in preparation for year 12.
I think I'll just get off VN for a while and do some work. haha!

Definitely! I never said it wasn't! Having said that though, VN does allow for a sense of community and belonging.

Lol, I got a massive blasting by my mum today for not working hard enough
Let's see...chem chapter, physics exercise, some englang reading, some german exercises, a spesh exercise today. Apparently I'm not doing any work.

yeah you can say that again, lucky I just met their expectations for my 3/4s this year

Your parents need a reality check. What would they do if you didn't get a perfect ATAR?
-
Oh. God. Not looking forward to that day.
I cannot give them an excuse to find fault in me, because my study habits haven't been...good. Well, according to them anyway.

asking out of curiousity; anyone going to the vn meet up in jan? everyone is welcome.
-
When and where is it?
-
at a beach (i think atm undecided which beach it is) and possibly looking at the 25th jan, i think taiga is organising it since he started the thread.

hahah i cant help but laugh at that :P did they expect you get like 51s in bio and methods? ;D
or did you think that you were no hope of 50s?
-
Are you coming swarley ?? :)

Probably not. My parents would be pretty tight about :(
If there is one at the end of year then i can come fo sho ;)

-
Ahh beach...damn don't think I'd be able to come.
-
not sure yet... i dont wanna go to altona or brighton >< i dont know how to get there sigh but trust metlink journey planners (Y) mm ... you can lie to your parents :-\
-
getting to brighton is just train to flinders st and train to brighton beach, the station is literally a 2 minute walk from the ocean
-
I wouldnt wanna go to Altona it's way too far... Maybe Brighton, probably not StKilda.
Hehe Thushan what are their expectations of you this year?? ;)
-
As stated in his signature. ;D 100% sure he'll get it.

well whatever makes ppl happy, i just know how to get to st kilda lol and i dont really like the west... so altona no no for me

tut tut ariawuu don't corrupt him :P
and @werdna: actually my parents don't expect 50s from me in German or Englang, because they know I'm not very strong at those, but I think I can do it if I put my head into it.
-
Your expectations may be higher than your parents ;)
And i dont wanna lie to parents, otherwise i may not have their trust and wont be able to go to all the 18th bdays this year ;D

and @werdna: actually my parents don't expect 50s from me in German or Englang, because they know I'm not very strong at those, but I think I can do it if I put my head into it.
At least you managed to fulfill your parents expectations this year. Apparently my top 6 in the state and 45 for Classics was not satisfactory. And to make things worse, I'm being compared to a student who got 46 for methods because his score is higher than my classics score. Where's the logic in the that...

And I hate how parents see past your achievements and criticise you for your shortcomings

LOL i thoguht my parents were bad, but your parents seem to have taken expectations to an entirely different level!!!

So the thread of "Where's everyone at..."
Currently, everyone is expressing their feelings about their parents high expectations
I'm loving this thread, where will we head next :)

Edit: sorry this is presuming you want to do medicine as a career after biomed anyways
I agree with Taiga. If Med is what you really want to do, you should do the course at any university that will accept you. You're only holding off your medical career by doing biomed, and it's an added roadblock and risk to getting into the course you really want.
Of course it's your decision... :) Good luck!

definitely agree, if you want to do med, then go interstate and do med - not risking it with a science degree that may lead you elsewhere..

Whilst usually against necromancy, this thread is still warm and its a quick question so I don't want to make a thread for it.
How are you guys balancing midyear subjects (chem, psych for me) with your other subject study? Are you doing m/y first and then rest or what?
-
Ill focus mainly on chemistry during the 1st semster as it's my only mid year. Probs wont spend too much time on methods more on spesh.
-

Same. I've only got Chemistry. It will take precedence over my other subjects.
-
screw having two midyears.
-
id focus more on the one that you think will be in your top 4.
-
I knew someone last year from my school who did Chemistry, Physics and Accounting, which all have mid-year exams. If that makes you feel any better. :p
-
I have Accounting and Physics midyears :/
But i've decided physics will be in my bottom 2, as i find it utterly confusing... :)
-
I've got chem and psych midyear exams
My plan is to focus on psych, because the concepts are easier to remember and understand than chem ones
-
Chem and physics midyears. Should be fun.
-
Chem, psych and bio, with chem + psych on the same day, the day after bio. Now, that's fun! Any advice? :)

How do you already know what subjects are going make up your top 4 (apart from english)?
I think he means that after a term or so, you have a fairly good idea of what subjects you are going to do well in for various reasons, so you may as well aim your time at something you have a chance at doing really well in.

yeah like luke said you should have a general idea of which subjects you're better at or like more after a term or so.

What if you feel equal? I have English and Psychology in Top 4. Out of Chemistry, Further and Methods (probable, might be spesh or uni psych somewhere in there in 2years time :P)..I need Chemistry to be in the Top 4 to look good for MBBS. That leaves me with Methods and Further. The whole point of Further is to get a 50...that leaves Methods in my bottom 2...that's bad :(..Maths has never been my worst subject :(
-
Just get 50 in everything.
Duh...
-
Well there is nothing wrong with feeling equal, however if you want to maximise your score, you are going to be a lot better off going for 4x 45's and 2x 35's than 6x 40's.
Afterall, the first scenario would give you an Aggregate of 187 whereas the second would only be 168...
How do you know you have Psych in your Top 4? Anything can happen, and it may come down to you hoping that you will be able to have a strong Top 4 if you do happen to stuff up on exams etc
As far as MBBS, I don't think Chem being in your Top 4 is going to drastically improve your chances if anything at all, the set goal of 35 (It is 35 yeah?) is just a prerequisite, it's not going to get you an interview if you had a crappy UMAT
Just go with the flow for this year, if you do well in Psych well then good for you, you'll have 2 out of 4 set, and you can decide half way through which subjects are going to have the best potential at getting a decent score!

Re: chem - Nah I just think it's kind of sad, Chem being the only prerequisite (yeah it's 35) and then end up landing it in my Bottom 2 :P

I spose in the end you have to think, would you rather have a place in Med with Chem as 6th or no Med and Chem Top 4 :P

The fact that you've been hanging around on a VCE forum about 8 months before actually doing a vce subject tells me that you're going to be aiming alot higher than a 35.
It's alot easier to get a scaled score in chem/physics/spesh/methods/language, than it is to get a 45 in psych (which will scale down a tad?)
So don't be upset if you don't get a top 4 score in psych, i don't know why you'd make that an aim. That's like saying if you got a 48 in psych and 50 in everything else you will be disappointed.

Re: chem - Nah I just think it's kind of sad, Chem being the only prerequisite (yeah it's 35) and then end up landing it in my Bottom 2 :P
Not to be overly presumptuous, but it's highly likely that Chem won't be in my top 4. I've got Methods and Eng/Lit already, plus spesh and latin are likely to scale to 50 (hopefully :P). Similar to what Taiga said, it's possible that you'll get a great score in Chem, but you're other subjects are just so good that it doesn't count. You're in year 11, you shouldn't be thinking too much about it. Try hard in everything and see how it goes. Most people don't have their year 11 3/4 in the top 4 so don't worry about it if that happens. If I get over 45 in Chem, one of my 3/4s in year 11 won't even be in my top 6. :P Have fun with your subjects, don't think so much about the numbers and how it fits with your ATAR just yet.
I'll also point out that Uni subjects are taking a huge directional change in 2012. It's basically impossible to get 5.5. From what I remember, they take the average of your top 4 scores and 10% of that will be one of your bottom two subjects. It's pretty dud to be honest...

How are you guys balancing midyear subjects (chem, psych for me) with your other subject study? Are you doing m/y first and then rest or what?
Mm i'll be trying my hardest in Chem for the First semester as i generally dont like it (well 3/4 could be better than 1/2) and then second semester I'll be focusing primarily on English and Specialist (because it will make studying Methods easier). I'll be revising PE throughout the whole year so i dont really have to study hardcore around end of year's.
I just hope I get about a 35 RAW in Chem - probably will take 5th.

45 in psych (which will scale down a tad?)
45 and over doesn't scale down in psych (from what I've heard) :P So that's a plus. But anything in the 40s range doesn't really move much anyway for psych.

Yes very much so.
I was planning on quitting my job this holidays to make way for study time.. never got around to doing it and now I feel behind and consequently a bit stressed.. (especially after reading about people having finished whole courses already)

This could give some motivation to kick start your work? ;)
Dont mean to sound stupid, but whats 'OP'?

there are still 2-3 weeks of holidays. enough time to accomplish something. do all your set hw first, then read english texts. when youve done that the start working ahead for whichever subject you want.
-
i start on 4th Feb.. thank god.. but my homework takes.. about 3 weeks... maybe i should work like 6 hours a day.. but.. i dont want to burn out before i get to school >< UGH
-
yeah i start on the 4th of feb as well ;D surely you cant have that much homework. and i wouldnt want to be working/studying for 6 hours a day...
-
i got 3 chapters in specialist to get through.. and probably an addition of my own. Im still on 1A Lawl
-
lol. ive completed my spesh hw which was like 1A-C. im just gonna learn spesh as we go in class i think.
but i reckon you should go through methods. even if you just learn the concepts and do a few questions, then you wont have to spend much time on it throughout the year; plus spesh covers some of methods as well :)
maybe start on chem if you have time.
-
I've done some Chemistry revision and decided to move onto working on my Japanese General Convo prep. It is seriously one of the most complex and difficult things I've done all holidays. @_@ So many links between questions that need to be considered on top of your content..
-
mm I've done.. nearly all my methods hw, started a bit on eng and read a bit of my context book and reading my text response, an exercise in specialist, ten minutes on PE.. and.. nothing in Chem.. lol WOW.. i feel so accomplished -.-zz
-

Chem is actually quite difficult to start without being taught. Getting ahead in methods is actually a huge bonus because it's quite a large course and you see a lot of students falling behind because it has to be taken at a very fast pace. If you use essentials, just compare the methods and spesh textbook... :P Plus, sort of like what swarley said, methods covers a lot of basics for spesh. It's also extremely beneficial to work on spesh, but it requires sooo much concentration.
Otherwsie... just read English texts. :)
-
I need to read my lit texts. :S
I've read/tried/summarised up to chapter 10 for methods, and done some reading (but not nearly enough, imo) for rens.
I had a mini-panic attack a few hours ago about not doing enough work and school hasn't even started yet! :(
-
hm well i didnt find chem too difficult probably because we had a week of year 12 and we started a lot of chpaters 1-3, most of which was revision of units 1+2.
i still need to read two of my texts.
-

Some of the techniques like NMR and to some extent chromatography are conceptually very hard to understand properly and those with average mathematics would find the trickier calculations in things like back titrations difficult.
I've only read one of my texts...and I do both English and Lit. sighhh
-
Who's going to read their English texts more than once?
-
Who's going to read their English texts more than once?
Not before school starts...more because of time constraints but also because it's probably not worthwhile.

2nd time would probably be after my unit 3 chem exam. the other times would be a rough skim of it.

Well some of the spectroscopy stuff where a bit harder to comprehend, but after reading it a few times along with some study guides it seemed okay. Well i found A+ notes and TSFX notes quite helpful for spectroscopy and the diff titrations.
Who's going to read their English texts more than once?
Probably not. I might read them again before sacs/exams

Probability is gonna be the hardest for me in Math Methods, T_T, I remember our school starting probability in semester 1, and had an intense 2 week study for the mid yr exam for probability, to only recieve a high B, as it was heavily probability based, which destroyed most of my marks. >;. Hopefully the summer holidays, studying over it, will become much more easier to grasp ;D

Eeeek, yes, probability is annoying.
The only fun part is where you use matrices and markov chains.

Probability is gonna be the hardest for me in Math Methods, T_T, I remember our school starting probability in semester 1, and had an intense 2 week study for the mid yr exam for probability, to only recieve a high B, as it was heavily probability based, which destroyed most of my marks. >;. Hope the summer holidays, studying over it, will become much more easier to grasp ;D
LOL yeah i hate probabilty as well... but apparently it isnt that hard and from what ive done on it so far, it seems okay....

Usually, the easiest questions on the VCAA exams are by far the probability ones. However, our hardest SAC was the probability one! It just takes a fair amount of work to move through the different sections of probability, (discrete, normal etc) but it quickly becomes easy after some work.
