Title: Monash Commerce Textbooks
Post by: sam.utute on January 02, 2011, 12:16:53 am
Hi everyone.

I was wondering if anyone doing Commerce at Monash could link me to the textbook list that is used in first-year. If not, could you please tell me the titles of some of the textbooks that are used.
I'm planning on acquiring them as early as possible in order to get ahead.

Sam

Each unit has its own booklist... it depends on what units you're doing, not on the fact that you're first year.

Also... booklists haven't been released yet.

If you are doing accounting or microeconomics, I can assure you you are already ahead.

Accounting: Principles of Accounting and Finance http://www.lib.monash.edu.au/collections/monash-authors/2010/9781742167008.html

Microeconomics: Economics by McTaggart, Findlay and Parkin (I think 6th edition is latest). If you are not going to do Macroeconomics later on, just buy the microeconomics text by the same authors.

Bus stats: lecture notes sufficient

Management: Management by Samson and Daft (3rd ed)

Don't know about the others.

It's not necessary to do anything before the semester start for either subject because you won't know what to read (unlike VCE you don't go through the whole textbook but read certain sections). Accounting is basically VCE accounting taught from scratch. Micro doesn't follow the textbook chapter for chapter and your most useful resource will be lecture slides.

Yep, the whole accounting book (~12 chapters) is covered in the semester.

Well... your readings are pretty much one or two chapters a week. You'll find all your subjects are like this. Uni consists of a lot of private study.

Don't worry - pretty soon you'll get used to sitting down and ploughing through a chapter of something each night.

1 week to read about 10-15 pages + do about 1-2 hours worth of questions is entirely manageable. The first year commerce units I did didn't have that much of a workload.

This.

First year is pretty cruisey compared to later years.

Do I really need to buy lecture slides?

Yeah, on my booklist for ECC, I have to buy lecture slides for $9.35...? Cant we just print them off?

If you've got an efficient printer, then print them off yourself.

However, buying it pre-printed at $9.35 is cheaper than printing it off yourself on-campus (which costs 12 cents a page, iirc).

You probably heard it off me? >.>

From the compulsary commerce subjects, which one is the hardest?

The general consensus is Business Law.
My transcript agrees.

I found Business Law to be very interesting but, yes, the most difficult first year subject I've taken.

Each to their own of course, but yeah.
