Title: where do you find time to exercise during vce?!
Post by: liuetenant on January 14, 2011, 10:36:39 pm
hi guys, i've recently "tried" to make up a study timetable for myself based on some ive seen throughout vn and universitiy websites, but considering the fact that school finishes at 4 (including getting home), irregular dinner hours, etc there's no room for some exercise? i want to study well, probs for like 2.5-3 hours a night, especially since i do have an atar im aiming for, but i dnt want to be a sludgy blob at the end of it too......

ideas?

If you want to fit it all in, don't procrastinate (harder said than done).

Though I must say, I'm pretty much incapable of studying when I get home from training on a weekday. Maybe add a bit of self-discipline too? :P

Try and plan each day as it comes - write a to-do-list everyday when you get home, and tick things off as you finish them. It's recommended that you study in 50-minute blocks, with a 10-minute block between each study block. So I guess you need to implement this into your daily schedule; 10 minutes of exercise or relaxing every 50 minutes sounds like a good idea.

Um wake up early?
I wake up at 6 30 and run 20mins at 10km/hr, 4times a week.

I can see myself lazing on Sundays though so that makes it 3times a week at VCE (Year 11).

EDIT: @OP: We share similar signatures ???

Run around your block. Or walk to/from school. Seriously take werdna's advice, that's good. Personally, I have compulsory Saturday sport in Year 12 throughout the whole year. Table Tennis and Soccer keeps me fit, enough.

Find a sport (preferably a team sport) that has three sessions per week (including training and game-day). Seriously a great way to maintain your fitness and it also allows you to plan your study sessions around it, so you keep yourself motivated with less spare time on your hands.

I meant everywhere, not at school.

And I just realised my school had an elevator! Not that anyone was ever allowed to use it...

only time i will ever come to an escalator/elevator is when i go out , not much during vce.

What about the occassional recess and lunch time?  You can play a game of (insert name of physical activity that floats your boat here) with your friends or just walk around the school or use the school gym. (if you have access to one) And if you have an exercise bike, put it infront of the tv and use it instead of the couch, thus killing two birds with one stone :)

I actually find that going for a 3~4km walk before studying is very beneficial since it makes me more "refreshed" and in a good state of mind compared to crawling back to the books

then again holidays have given me time to have this luxury :(

Just write it as a part of your schedule that you do at the same time but everyweek make it a different date.
Although, this varies on your subjects and if you have a busy day.
So say if you have "easy days" on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday. Put half an hour to an hour of exercise into your schedule as a maybe if time permits and if it doesn't work out on the Monday make sure you do it on the Wednesday as a reward.

There is always the option of joining a soccer team or a cricket team or a football team or a netball team.
It is then part of your schedule always, you also get the social benefits of meeting new friends.

I'd recommend joining a sports team/association that has regular training dates, but if that's too much commitment then definitely werdna's idea, breaking up study into 50 minute periods and instead of wasting ten minutes of each hour crawling back to the television or bed, go for a walk, get some fresh air :3

I played footy during year 12 (January until September) which was two nights a week and games on Saturday (which took up the whole day generally). On Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights, when I got home from school at 4 after my bus trip I'd go for a run for about half an hour, and then start homework some time before 5pm. This allowed at least 2 hours before dinner and then as much as I wanted after dinner (usually 2 - 3 hours).

Exercising regularly was a key to my year 12, it freshened me up and burned some energy that I had from sitting down all day at school and studying at home. Do whatever you can to work in some exercise into your timetable is my advice.

Didn't go to the gym, probsbly the reason why I'm still the same size I was in year 9!

But yeah, on training nights I probably only did 2 hours study at the most, but on Sundays I did 6 or 7 hours.

Throughout year 12 I made significant gains in strength working out at the gym and refining my diet.  I spent about 4.5 hours a week working out and rode my mountain bike on top of that.

I knew all along I wanted to do this and that I would have to make some sacrifices in order to achieve my academic goals. For me, I spent most of lunchtime in the library and made every spare worthwhile, not once did I leave school early (if I had no classes) and I never took the option of sleeping in.

If your really struggling to find time, I'd suggest lowering your study time by half an hour and using it to exercise, at least every second night.

Use leisure time to exercise and have fun at the same time. How?

Buy the Xbox360 Kinect with game "Kinect Adventures" and play the mode 'Reflex ridge', a fun way to physically wear your body out in 30 mins, saving time in your daily routine of school/work/play+exercise :).

Exercise itself is fun. And it doesn't have to be in front of a TV screen either like you're suggesting :P

The other key here is to find those oppurtunities to be active.
Those times you are bored and sitting around doing nothing or either procrastinating see it as a chance to go for a small run/walk, walk the dog if you have one or take the bike out and go somewhere to get focused.
It is also sometimes good to have a friend to go along with you so you can both get out for a while and have some social time whilst excercisng at the same time.
Title: Re: where do you find time to exercise during vce?!

I found that rather than trying to put in a specific time, I'd exercise when I was feeling stressed, worked up, or like I wasn't getting any work done. That would usually calm me down enough to study very efficiently. Remember, it's better to do one hour of efficient study when you're in the mood for it than 2 hours of study where you're not getting anything done and just trying to study because your timetable says to.

^ lol, im not rich as  :P
but i think its a good idea to wake early........600-630ish? homework till around 7, then get ready for school.
then after school, i can hit the gym till 6, come home and work till 7. dinner and more working after that?
ill probs get around 3-4+ hours if i also study during lunch breaks etc?

(lol, i suck pretty bad at subjects, so i gotta lift my game! and on top of that, i dnt like the idea of getting FAT!)

It is also sometimes good to have a friend to go along with you so you can both get out for a while and have some social time whilst excercisng at the same time.

I went to the school gym with 3 other year 12's, we'd listen to music, laugh and have a great time without really thinking about the sac the next morning or the exam in 2 weeks. When your alone you lose a lot of motivation to exercise and it really is crucial to your well being.

Listen to audiobooks of your English texts and Douchy's Biology Podcast while you go for a run/jog/walk/bikeride.

I wouldn't, treat yourself to some breaks from school. You've got to stay human! (Can't stress this enough...)

I'd exercise when I was feeling stressed, worked up, or like I wasn't getting any work done. That would usually calm me down enough to study very efficiently.

I did the same thing! When sac marks weren't going my way or when I was simply having a bad day I'd treat myself to a nice mountain bike ride. For me, this was my escape, I wouldn't think about school or friends or anything other than the trail in front of me.

Ah okay it's awesome that you're worried about this kind of stuff. As some people have said, you can sort of use it as a break, and a constructive one. There are heaps of studies supporting exercise in improving morale, sleep etc. You'll find that you should be able to fit it in and after you're back and have had a rest, you'll probably be alert and ready to study.

Although I struggled to keep up my normal frequency, I was still able to go to the gym 2-3 times a week, as well as playing sport at lunchtime and having a hit of tennis every few weeks. It's just about enjoying the exercise while you're at it then having meaningful studying sessions and not wasting time.

You can also find some novel ways to fit it all in - e.g. riding your bike to school. Good luck and fitness > study (sorry VNers) :)

finding time to exercise is pretty hard especially if you think the time is better spent on studying. I quit australian nationals in vce to focus on studying but did often find the times on weekends to train and often would go jog every day just to keep fit.

But to be productive, you can't study all the time, sure, if you're a focused person, and you like it you can do maths for like 10 hours straight :P :D but you still need to take breaks sometimes in order to rejuvenate yourself. Running is good, and running a few kms only takes like 20mins and it makes you feel good too, as well as being beneficial for study, in my opinion. :)

Too true. I read somewhere that students who exercised regularly throughout the year felt less stressed than the students who don't.

And here's some other articles relating to it's benefits: http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/story?id=99556&page=1

Not sure about you guys, last year (yr 11), before I went to sleep, I always did 10-15 mins stretching and 1hour of exercising, whatever it may be, this usually was a regular routine , which happened 4 to 5 days out of 7. xD.

The Downside, after going home from school, I immedietely took a nap from 4pm to 6pm, dinner straight away and slept at 2am. :x Which left remainder for piano and h/w and what not.hahahaxD

Compared to other students, my stress level was almost none ;)

This is what I do, with the naps and sleeping at 2am...but without the "10-15 mins stretching and 1hour of exercising"...LOL! As others have said...I just keep telling myself that I'm gonna work it off after year 12 (which I'm still determined to do). I noticed a disturbing thing about sleep in this thread. The best thing you can do is get to sleep by 11-11:30pm. Earlier is even better. It gets a lot harder grinding out the days when youre sleeping at 2:30am and waking up at 7. Try to get used to sleeping early even if its not what you WANT to do.

recently i was at the AIS and we had a coac speak to us about the little things, but he said the hours b4 12 oclock were best time to sleeep as you gain the most there.... just something on sleep

in regards to exercise, when i said wake up early, it could simply mean 6:30 and go for a 30 minutes walk or jog, if u do that, you sould stil be able to get your 8-10 hours of sleep if u go to be say 9ish? but i guess it depens on how much h/w you do after school and your other comittments

HAHAHAHA I can confirm that after studying 'Sleep' as part of Psych -.-

NREM sleep is essential for recovering from fatigue (and also many other things such as neurotransmitter replenishment) and NREM sleep occurs MORE in the earlier half of the the night than the latter. The more you delay your sleep, the less NREM sleep you'll get and the less recovery you'll have.

On the contrary studying right before you sleep will aid in memory as REM sleep has a role in the consolidation of long-term memories.

So which would be more beneficial...Hmmmm?

my idea of what to this year ( i'm in year 12 this year) is go to school, catch the bus straight to the gym after school, come home and have dinner, study my ass off and sleep like a baby then wake up early and study. studies show that studying straight after waking up increases memory storage or some shit like that. feedback?
On the contrary studying right before you sleep will aid in memory as REM sleep has a role in the consolidation of long-term memories.

The problem is, right after I get home, Im already in my sleep syndrome. So either, a) Drink Coffee to sustain myself b) Get a nice long nap, then start studying.

So which would be more beneficial...Hmmmm?
Everyone's sleep-cycle is different although yours is slightly weird lol. Sleep when your body is telling you it's tired and you'll wake up recovered!

I had that problem a lot during my VCE actually. The best remedy is going to bed earlier the night before but as ATAR said above^ there's no actual course of action that you can take when you feel tired. Have a nap and when you wake up, eat something and start studying. You can't study effectively when you're sleepy.

My sleep pattern wasn't great - I went to bed late most nights and napped during the day when I came home. Then later that night I couldn't fall asleep because of the nap so I stayed up late, and the cycle continues. Some mornings when I had library periods I slept in so that was a bit of an exception.
