Title: Academic Advice Day 2011 Thread
Post by: stonecold on January 23, 2011, 03:33:57 am
It is inevitable that this thread be made.

What is everyone doing on AAD?

There are so many different  info sessions to attend, and the BBQ at lunchtime also looks like a must!

List out the sessions you are planning on going to. Maybe you will have some VN acquaintances joining you!

I will try to attend
-Biomed info sesh
-Criminology (Arts)
-Linguistics & Applied Linguistics (Arts)
-Psychology (Breadth)
-Critical Thinking with Data (UniBreadth)
-Logic: Language and Information (UniBreadth)
-Medical Sequence (UniBreadth)
-Seeing the Whole Picture (UniBreadth)

I am too lazy/tired to work out the times atm.

I'm particularly looking forward to meeting mr. andrewloppol haha.  He should be very easy to spot.  :P

That looks really interested Stonecold...

On the other hand I am just going to commerce-related stuff and using AAD as an excuse to hang out with friends  ;D

You probably won't end up going to all those sessions. If you're anything like me you'll get a few down then bail cause they were pretty damn boring

I'll attempt to sit through the science subject ones: bio, chem, maths - hooray for having a different surname to other people I know who are doing science.

Then bbq, aw yeah free food and off to psych, science expo and whatever else I can fit in and be bothered attending.

I am in the opposite situation. I'm an Arts student with friends who do commerce, science, and environments. Good fun.

Anywho, I'll do the Arts info sessions, economics, politics and probably anthropology and social theory.

At the end of the day, if you don't go to a session you haven't missed much. You can always email the subject coordinator, who will be desperate for students to take his/her subject and get them to send you info/the course syllabus etc

For those people wishing to attend course information sessions for the popular science subjects such as Chem and Bio:

Tip:  Get there early to either get a seat or at least stand in a place where you can hear the coordinator well.

Also, I found the Chemistry 1 info session very useful.  :)

Bcomm(a-l) [is that ok despite having the surname tram? I need to go to his session other wise I miss out the dipmus session]

Dipmus session 11:30

Commerce advance standing-[do I need to go to this to claim credit for Umep??]

They don't actually care which lectures you go to. They only split them up alphabetically so the majority of people go "right, that's my time" and they don't get 700 people in the same lecture.

You can claim credit at any time by going to a student centre and filling out a form. Just do it when you have 20 minutes to kill some time in first semester.

Another question, on the vtac website it says my enrolement time is from 11 till 12 at the exact place where the second bcomm lecture is being held, is it just a lecture or is there anything else happening that is personal?

So what goes on during the actual course BSc session, just basically giving an outline of the course parameters and possibility of certain studys?:

Also theres no specific chem sessions just chem..I think

I've only ever had my name checked at a lecture once, which was at a special guest lecture in ESD1. They were so desperate to have people actually attend that they made 2% of your final mark a freebie just for attending the guest lecture.

Which basically just meant we got our names scanned, walked in the door and straight out the opposite door. ;)

Thanks! On a related note, does anybody know if all the BSc sessions are held in the same theatre? The itinerary site doesn't let you choose your non-'allocated' one so i can't confirm which theatre session 2 (10-11) is in.

One thing to clear up. What happens on the enrolment date? Mine's at 10-11 at some building off campus and I seriously have no clue whether to bring tfn number/passport/things like that along. Called up 13 MELB and whole heaps of other numbers last week but I was on hold for over an hour. I gave up waiting, haha!

Okay so you know how the enrollment pack is all 'accept your offer by 24 Jan' but then on the next page it's like 'make sure you have accepted your offer and done all this other stuff by Jan 31'?  Well, WHICH IS IT?  Because on the portal it tells me my offer lapses Jan 31.
Title: Re: Academic Advice Day 2011 Thread
Post by: simonhu81292 on January 23, 2011, 11:37:43 pm
i think accepting the offer is before 24th of JAN, and the 31st of JAN is for the enrolment of the subjects...
but i might be wrong ..
this is quite confusing
Title: Re: Academic Advice Day 2011 Thread
Post by: simpak on January 23, 2011, 11:48:30 pm
Nah it actually says offer lapses Jan 31 on my portal, I can screencap it:

I'm only asking because I actually can't accept it until someone approves my course withdrawal.

yeah ...maybe you are right ...i logged on to mine
it says offer lapse date is 31st of JAN
and the Enrolment Lapse date is 18th of FEB..
but we need someone else to confirm this ...
Title: Re: Academic Advice Day 2011 Thread

Just enrol before either of the dates and you'll be fine.
Title: Re: Academic Advice Day 2011 Thread
Post by: simpak on January 24, 2011, 12:02:24 am
Well I can confirm it because it's now 12:01 and my offer is still there for the taking.  I knew they were just lying to make you go to AAD.  Like, it's not like they mark your name off or anything or even know if you go.

When I called uni and asked if I could be admitted to two courses at once the woman was like 'no you need to withdraw from your course first but all you do is press a button, just be sure because there's no turning back'.
So I waited until I was sure/could be bothered and it was THEN that I found out there is no button there is a form which needs to be approved by the Arts students centre, which never does anything.

Chill out.

Rule of thumb: if you have a question, figure it out yourself from information on the website. If you have a ridiculously specific question, make a time to see the subject coordinator. If you want to see a subject coordinator, don't attempt to do so when 5,000+ new students are all wandering around the uni.

There was a table in the foyer at the Spot that was surrounded by a crap load of people. If you managed to wait long enough, they'd give you an appointment card with date + time.

It took ages to get through that enormous cluster of people in the Spot, but eventually managed it.

My favourite session I went to was the Physics one, the guy talking, Roger, was highly amusing even if his ridiculously lame puns wanted to make you bash your head against the nearest wall.

I got one of the SSS bags and it didnt have it in there, not very happy. Will wait til O-week.

Please tell me you aren't complaining about the contents of the free showbags.  ::)

They weren't handed out in the SSS showbags, anyway.
I may have over exaggerated about my unhappiness. I just wanted one as i have heard good things about it and had looked forward to getting one.

The other contents of the bag was great. I'll just try search around for one of those survival books.
