i know im not a long time user, but ive been lurking around this forum for a few months now. the website is very helpful for students like me but sometimes i find the administrators and mods out of touch with everyone els. i just wanted to say tht this website shud be more friendly

Don't think that we're not aware of it as well. There's already multiple threads going for 3 pages long each or so in the moderator forums of us discussing what we can do about it. It's just hard getting the right balance between getting order here and consequently over-moderating, and letting things simply descend into utter anarchy. Either extreme isn't good, so we're currently in the process of trying to get that balance back somehow.
Also, most of the mods are uni students as well, so it does get harder to really be on the same level to some degree. Still, if there's any particular incidents that are actually troubling you or were the impetus behind this thread, PM me or another mod and we'll see what we can do about it.

hi shinny, your one of the good mods here. :) i think the admins and the mods take this website to seriously. i think just relax and try to be on same level as us but whenevr u see something wrong, fix it. their is a lot of arguing bw mods/admins and students too. i looked thru the first few threads of da yr 2007 when this website was opend - it was more friendly then as u can see. now it is to much like a business. people have exaggerateed roles under there username and it is ridiculosu. thats all i wan to say

Define overuling. As a mod, I try my best not to be too controlling with my "power" - aside from one thread in recent history, most of my activity comes from deleting spam and adding in quick "Hey calm down guys" posts. I'd argue that from what I see, this is what most of the mods on this site do most of the time.

i tend to agree... i havent found the mods to be over controlling, sure they put a foot down here and there but with the world like it is today, people can say anything and it can be used against them, so i think they do a good job
but i guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion

I never found any of the mods or admins to be over-controlling... I also think they are doing a pretty good job around here!

I have noticed it happen on the odd occasion being here since the very start of 2009 and its caused a couple forums members to become very upset or leave (kinda leave that is) but i really think, in that regard it has gotten a lot better.
It hasn't happened at all lately, in recent memory anyway, so i think it is definitely on the up.

I know right! You go to post something and all them control-freak moderators just shut you down in a cruel and callous manner with minimal regard for what we're actually trying to say. :'(

I agree with OP. Sometimes its pretty bad. Ive been banned a couple of times for petty things. Some have been justified. But when ninwa over-reacts and threatens to get rowdy with the ban-stick when a thread goes off-topic thats a bit of a worry. Especially when no ones being personally attacked, everyones just being friendly.
Its so bad that ill probably get a warning or something just for posting this here. The problem is the top 2 seem to take everything that isnt directly related to the topic in the thread title as an attempt to bring down the site. Get real. No need to navigate the forum looking stony-faced like VCE examiners. Relax.

I agree with this whole statement. Moderators are fine - admins are going too far. Meh, it has toned down over the past 2 weeks but for a period there it was pretty nasty.

She's just following orders. Almost all the mods have expressed concern over enwiabe's de-railing rule. It's still under discussion so yeh, just hang in there.

eh, the mods here aren't as bad as at they were at BoS. When I used to go there I would get banned for the most pointelss things like linking someone to the ATARcalculator becasue it was considered 'advertising'.
But yeah, sometimes you should all just chill and relax.

It seems public criticism and discussion of questionable mod/admin action is strictly prohibited.

We respect werdna's privacy, and so we chose not to make public the reasons he is no longer a mod.
It was not our original intention to "de-mod" werdna. There were certain things we were unhappy with, and so we offered him a probationary period to give him a fair chance to correct these things. It was werdna who declined our offer of a probationary period, and chose to no longer be a moderator. We were sorry this was the outcome... please let me make it clear that werdna is a valuable member of AN, and we're grateful that he continues to put a lot of time and effort into his fantastic essay marking initiative.
I was the one who locked werdna's thread. I did this because werdna suggested it be deleted, but I didn't think that deleting it would be necessary. However, I felt something did need to be done about it, because I didn't want certain comments made about werdna being immature spiraling out control... werdna's choice was his, and he didn't deserve to be questioned about it. No moderator deleted that thread; I can only assume that werdna deleted it himself for his own reasons. If this was not the case (which honestly wouldn't surprise me, given AN's volatility since the upgrade), I can ask Nina to try and restore it.

I honestly don't think the community would benefit from us discussing why you're no longer a moderator... I really only intended to explain our actions to the community if you specifically wanted us to. Thank you though, werdna. Giving us permission to disclose this issue was very generous and selfless of you... opening yourself up like that for the benefit of the community.

I think it best for it to remain locked. If there was a specific reason you deleted it (other than the "clutter" factor), and you wish for it to remain deleted, please PM me about it. Hopefully it will satisfy everyone's curiosity, without compromising your privacy.
