Title: the end.

3 hours, two courses, one direction-less semi-academic - WHICH DEGREE WILL CLAIM HER?

choose science, its far better. (would have chosen it anyway over biomed - yuck calculus+data analysis...)

well with the thread title "the end" I was expecting you were going to announce that you were going to drop out of uni and become a plumber or something, so I'm gonna go with drop out.

Choose biomed, the second year core subjects are the best things the uni has to offer

Seeing as your still undecided I'd go with science. It'll leave you with a much broader career spectrum than Biomedicine will.

But on the other hand, The structured course of Biomedicine will probably help you as it seems you find decision making quite difficult ;D

Good decision :)

And you can always transfer if you don't end up liking it.

That's what I like to hear :D

btw I'm doing some holiday reading of the textbook "Life". Can I just skip the photosynthesis and plant stuff?

Post by: Russ on January 31, 2011, 07:07:39 pm
Yes. If you did VCE biology in 2010 you can skip the entire textbook.

Post by: Massofbubbles on January 31, 2011, 07:09:48 pm
Oh ok. I did vce bio (got 48).
Can you recommend some other reading to do instead? Organic chem text maybe? I just want to start the course already :)

Edit: I'm doing stats in semester 1 and calc 2 in semester 2, otherwise I'd start doing some maths now.

If you got 48 then you won't have any problems. The extra stuff is predominantly rote, like taxonomic categories and a disgraceful amount of porifera/nematode/etc. names to learn

If you want to do some ochem, I hated McMurry and Zumdahl (although other people love them) and used Schaum's Outlines, which was really good. I've also heard good things about organic chemistry as a second language, if you can track it down.

Just learn stereochemistry perfectly and the mechanisms of those stupid nucleophilic attack etc. reactions

Awesome. Thanks heaps for the info. I'll check out Schaum's Outlines.

same place you got the book?
solutions books are generally priced the same as actual textbooks, students will pay that if they need it (you don't)

Zumdahl solutions are downloadable via the Chemistry LMS under the Additional Resources tab. You'll see it when you get access to it. So no point wasting money looking for it when you can get your hands on a free ebook !!

Was just about to say that.  But I can only say for Chem 1.

And best of luck mavisgibbons.  :)  Think of it this way: You've at least given your best shot at your first choice, now you know which direction you want to head.

Hey Russ, were you referring to "Schaum's Outline Of General, Organic and Biological Chemistry"?

Cheers.

wait, so what was your decision mavisgibbons? :)

Science over Biomedicine :)
I'm hoping I don't regret it...

I don't think you have access to the Learning Management System (LMS) yet.  You can try logging in here.  Just use your email login details.

If your subjects appear, then your set but I highly doubt it at this time.

That'd be right for everyone, except those doing summer subjects or continuing students who have last semester's subjects still present.

Just wait a bit.  Uni doesn't start until later this month.  Chillax and enjoy the last bit of holidays.  It's going to be a gruelling 8 weeks...

Yeah, the site says: "all 2011 Semester 1 LMS subjects (2011_SM1) will automatically be made available to students on Friday 18 February 2011".

Post by: simpak on February 03, 2011, 01:43:43 am
You don't have access to the LMS until they update the subjects.  So like, you have to wait until the current text in the box on the left hand side of the portal telling you what subjects you're enrolled in turn into hyperlinks.  Then you can access whatever is on the LMS for that subject :)

It's a long shot, but is there any way we can access last year's lecture recordings?

Ask people who would have downloaded them?
What sub?

I'm after the biomed chem ones. I guess I'll try asking people once uni starts. But then I probably won't have time to work ahead anyway..

Yeah I can't help you there, I have the majority of the Psych ones though, I use them during revision.

Don't work ahead in uni.

And yeah Schaum's Organic Chemistry is what you want.

First year subjects don't usually have screen capture (only audio) and it's hard to follow a lecture when you can't see where the lecturer is pointing and his hand gestures. So it doesn't make any sense to try find the lecture recordings :)

And some lecturers exploit this but deliberately saying, "Now if you look at this... *points*" so if you haven't rocked up to the lecture, then depending on the slide, you'll have a little difficulty following on.
