I'm still waiting for my VCE school timetable to arrive in the mail, but if anyone knows theirs please discuss:
1) how many spares/frees you have
2) how long your classes are
3) do you get to leave school early or come in later
4) the flexibility of what you can do in your frees/spares
5) how many classes of a certain subject you have per a week
I'm just curious as to what goes on at other schools :)
-
1) should have 4 or 5
2) 43 minutes (7 periods)
3) Leave early every Wednesday
4) Study only I think
5) 6 periods of each subject/week
-
:3
We have
1/ Five spares a week, two doubles and a single period.
2/ Our classes go for 52 minutes each.. I think.
3/ I get to leave early Thursdays because that's when one of my double spares is :3
4/ Pretty much do whatever you want, some students choose to study but a lot walk into town for something nice to eat.
5/ Five classes for each subject, 6 periods in each day!
-
Last year i had:
1) 15 spares a cycle (15 hours)
2) 1 hour. the day is split 2-recess-2-lunch-1
3) can leave before lunch if period 5 is a free
4) anything, go maccas
5) 7 a cycle, 3-4 a week
-
1) 5 a week, i think
2) 49 minutes
3)Yup, whenever my spares are.
4)We are meant to study, but they aren't that strict with it.
5) 5 one week and 4 every second week
-
1) 5 study (spare) periods. I'll be spending 4 of these mentoring/tutoring juniors though.
2) 4 periods a day, 75 minutes each. Used to be 6 periods a day, 50 minutes each prior to the merger.
3) Yes, Wednesdays I'll have only period 1 and 2, which means I can go home at 12pm every Wednesday if I wanted, but again, I'm spending my time doing tutoring instead.
4) It's recommended that you do private study in the library, but most people (me included!) go to the shopping centre. Some people go to the fish&chips shop too, but they always get caught - teachers are always buying their lunch there and catch the kids whilst waiting for their food. Once, this bunch of guys hid behind the counter when they saw teachers coming. ;D
5) There are 7 periods for each subject over a fortnight. There are even double period sessions for a subject sometimes... 150 minutes of draining maths as the case was last year.
-
1) should have 4 or 5
2) 43 minutes (7 periods)
3) Leave early every Wednesday

how many frees do we get in yr 11 ?
2 - Wednesday p6 & 7
-
1) 9, but 10 eveery second week
2) 45-50minutes
3) yes you can leave when your classes are finished for the day
4) study in the library
5) 5 classes a week
-
1) I have 3 PS's; (Private Study) periods and 3 spare periods a week. It varies depending on the amount of subjects one is doing.
2) 40 minutes per subject.
3) Leave early on Wednesday (if a SAC isn't on) and Friday afternoons.
4) Practically no flexibility; we are meant to study. Can't go outside of school either.
5) 6 periods per subject a week. We have 8 periods of class a day, except on Friday's which is 7.
-
Is my school the only one with a 4 period day? :S
I don't think the change to 4 periods was a curriculum/learning benefited change.. it was more so for the convenience of the daily timetabler and less movement between house buildings. Which is fail because 75 minutes is a bloody long time.
1) I have 3 PS's; (Private Study) periods and 3 spare periods a week. It varies depending on the amount of subjects one is doing.
This is interesting.. how do you differentiate between a PS and spare period?
-
first of all my school has a "10 day timetable" with a week A and week B that goes over a fortnight
1) 6~7 a week
2) 1 hour
3) both, but I try to use my frees whenever possible for work
4) during period 1~3 everyone must use the VCE study room, in period 4~5 we can use the "year 12 treehouse" or go home
5) 7 in a cycle
-

With PS periods, we are allocated a room to go to and a teacher supervises us for 40 minutes and we're meant to do work from other subjects; i.e. catching up on work. On my school timetable, spare periods have '*' - asterisks; which indicates we can go home whenever your classes finish for that day. That's generally on a Monday/Thursday for me.
-
Woahh that's literally like a detention. So strict.
-
1) 3 "spare subjects" which basically means I have 18 spares per 7 day cycle (12-15ish per week)
2) 45mins- P1,3,4 40mins- P5,6 80mins-P2
3) Refer to 4)
4) Anything at all...I could go to Europe as long as I'm back for the next class. So yes we can come late and leave early if our spares allow it.
5) We have 7 day cycles for our timetable...and we have 6 of the same class per cycle. So basically 4/5 a week.
-
Here's mine:
Monday: No free periods (except lunch) 8:10-2:25
Tuesday: Period one free (FUCK YEAH) 9:00-2:25
Wednesday: Double free :D 8:10-12:45 (but only have 3 classes in that time)
Thursday: Period 8 free :D 8:10-2:25
Friday: One free (which makes a double lunch) 8:10-2:25
My timetable is prety good for my school because most people have 8:10-3:15 on thursday (which is painfull) but I get to leave early at 2:25 :D Also, that tuesday period one is awesome.
1) Overall, it adds up to 5 free periods a week
2) 50 Minutes (except period one and two on tuesdays which are 45 minutes- cos assembly is tuesday [but not many people go])
3) We can come later, and we're not supposed to leave early but they're never gonna stop you.
4) well, i have one double, one double lunch and two frees that I can spend at home (p1 or p8) so I suppose I'll spend the seccond part of the double lunche in the library (what fun is lunch by yourself?), spend the double free in the library too... and go home for the other two. But a few mates also have my free blocking, so that could get in the way of library :(
5) 5 a week :)
I'll have to aim not to do anything stupid at school on a monday or a tuesday, otherwise they can keep me back in detention on thursday (thus relieving me of the chance to go home early).
-
Is my school the only one with a 4 period day? :S
we do too!
1) 5.. i think
2) 75mins -such a long time o-o-
3) yeah If we have a spare during that time
4) I think we're meant to study.. but last year I just went out
5) 3 periods per week
-
Woahh that's literally like a detention. So strict.
Yeahhh, it's not that bad. We can still talk in class and stuff. They; being the teachers take the roll too, to see if students turn up or just wag the period. It's intense. :p
-
2) 75mins
that's just silly.
-
2) 75mins
that's just silly.
It would be an administrative and timetabling nightmare to organise 2100 students into 6 period days though.. apparently the new buildings have this air circulation system that measures carbon dioxide and keeps us from losing focus.
-
Slightly off-topic; we had the option of doing Friday activities, which is like extra-curricular activities offered by my school on Friday afternoons. There were some interesting activities offered. I tried "Chinese power breathing" last year; that was weird! You breath in and out for like 40 minutes with our Chinese teacher. I didn't get the point of it; it was suppose to help your "mind, body and spirit". Does any other school offer that sort of thing? I doubt it. LOL. :p

LOL if my school had that kind of thing, NO ONE would attend.

Sounds like a load of shit to me. But it may be true.....

That would be kinda cool. I want extra curricular activities >:|

Did some digging and found this. So I guess it is legit.

Oh, wow is that your school? that design is epic :O
-
Wow thanks for all the replies. I see there are a lot of complex timetabling systems. It's taking me a while to kind of understand each system. I wished I was able to leave school grounds in spares wedged between classes. Lol, theres hardly even a fence to contain us all
1) I have 5 spares because I do 5 subjects. If you do 4 subjects, you get 10 spares
2) 50 minutes on Tuesday, thursday and Friday. 45 minutes on Monday, Wednesday, mainly because there's assemblies on Monday and everyone in the school get to leave at 1:35 on Wednesday
3) if you have a single or double free in the morning, you can come later. If you have a single or double free in the afternoon, you can leave earlier. If you have a single or double free in the middle of the day, you have to study
4) we're meant to study in our frees or if you do an instrument you go to your music classes or if you're doing a LOTE, you need to practice conversational skills with a teacher aid at least once a week
5) 5 periods a subject
@Furbob, is the year 12 treehouse actually in a tree? What do you do in there.?
@Werdna, are you voluntarily tutoring?
@Pixon, the layout of my school library's tables was inspired by MGS lol
@EPL.11.4eva, extracurricular activities sounds fun. I have the option of doing some on my Wednesday afternoons

WHOO 10 frees a week next year. :D :D can't wait!
azngirl and I go to the same school, so my answer's the same as hers.
Also, I'm frustrated I haven't got my timetable yet - and hence don't know my teachers. :(

It looks good, especially in the dark. It reminds me of one of those modern houses that has won design of the year or something.
Would boarding school work at DHS?

2) 45 mins each
3) yup
4) do whatever you want, so long as you don't make trouble
5) i have 6 classes of each subject every 6 days - can't say 5 a week because it doesn't work that way; we have a 6 day cycle
-
1) 10 periods spare per week
2) 1 period = 50min (7periods per day)
3) i go to school 10:30 on tuesday and leave early 1:10 on tuesday and come to school 11:35 on fridays
4) can do anything in my spares
5) 5 classes per subject so 20 classes per week
-

I thought it was going to come today...but no, all I got was free dental treatment in the mail.
Yeh, I really would like to know who my teachers are as well...*sigh* it has to come tomorrow
Lol, the school intranet still says my timetable is blank haha
-
Must admit that my timetable is pretty awesome...
-Period lengths are 55mins
-Basic structure is 30 periods a week- I have 10 frees! :)
Monday: 9.00-2.25
Tuesday: 9.00-2.25
Wednesday: 8.10-12.45 but a double free in between the two periods that I have to go for...
Thursday: 8.10-2.25
Friday: 8:10-2.25
:D
-
azngirl456, I'm (hopefully) going to be starting up a year 11 and 12 mentoring/tutoring program this year, and it'll most likely happen in spare periods.
Not sure how boarding school works tbh.. and Mint, yeah it is. :P
-
- 10 Day Timetable
- 6 periods a day, 36 per week
- 2 study periods, 3 RE periods, 1 PACA period
- 5 periods per subject per week
1) should have 4 or 5
2) 43 minutes (7 periods)
3) Leave early every Wednesday
4) Study only I think
5) 6 periods of each subject/week
how many frees do we get in yr 11 ?
2 - Wednesday p6 & 7
what the fuck are you serious?
Only 2?
in year 11 we have no study periods...
2) 75mins
that's just silly.
It would be an administrative and timetabling nightmare to organise 2100 students into 6 period days though..
We have 2000 and it works, but without much ability to swap stuff around.

@EPL.11.4eva, extracurricular activities sounds fun. I have the option of doing some on my Wednesday afternoons
It's not as exciting as it sounds. We had on offer: computer club (which is effectively gaming), chess, mahjong, indoor cricket/soccer, ten-pin bowling and other random activities. The school makes us pay for most of the activities; besides computer club, chess and mahjong. I thoroughly enjoyed computer club in Year 9. Though in Year 12, we don't need to do it. Last year, my activity was "Accounting assistance" - all Year 11 students doing Accounting 3/4 were forced to do it; no option. We spent nearly 2 hours doing Accounting on Friday afternoons; to make it worse, I had an Accounting class right before "Accounting assistance" on a Friday, which sucked. It was really boorring at times. :p
-
@luken93, what does PACV stand for?

That sounds like triple accounting. It must have been tiring. I can't stand looking at numbers for too long
-
@azngirl PACA is basically just a class of homeroom (dunno what you call it), we usually have our assemblies and other general stuff then so as to not disturb the timetable etc
-
That's pretty smart!
-
@azngirl PACA is basically just a class of homeroom (dunno what you call it), we usually have our assemblies and other general stuff then so as to not disturb the timetable etc
Oh I understand what you mean. I call it form assembly
-
Ah yes that - we used to have form assembly too. It only ran for 10 minutes so the school scrapped it. We just go straight to period 1, then recess, then period 2 and 3, then lunch and period 4.
-
We have form assembly after recess, so those with morning frees don't have to come in early. :D
-
I have a five period day, and a ten day cycle. So here goes...
1) I should get 8 for doing a uni enhancement (as replacement for the 5th vce subject I didn't do), 2 for not doing sport in year 12, and anything that's left over (my count is 3), which adds up to 13 periods; but I'm not too sure how many I will get (my school is too hard to predict). I'll let you know on my first day friday (we don't have a fancy intranet yet, so I see my timetable when I rock up in the morning) ;)
2) ~60 mins depending on the day.
3) I cannot come in later, but I am able to leave early
4) Basically, I have to stay on campus unless I have no other subjects on that day. If I have to stay on campus, I have to go to the library or the assigned room as per my timetable.
5) As per 1), I should have 8 per subject. 8 periods * 5 subjects = 40 periods; 40 periods + 2 sport (I get to go home so they're frees) + 1 Personal Development + 4 RE + 3 leftover = 50 periods
Also, my assemblies occur outside of the timetable, in a special period after period 4 and before lunch for 20 mins once a week...
-
We have form assembly after recess, so those with morning frees don't have to come in early. :D
Hopefully MHS is changing their policy to match yours as part of their review last year...will know tomorrow!
On topic (since I'm doing a VET) I get 14 (officially) spares a fortnight of 43mins each! :)
I say officialy because 2 are Wednesday afternoon (x2 for a fortnight) where normal y11's do what they want but I go to VET.
So technically 10 frees a fortnight! ;)
-

I think you "technically" get 14 and "practically" get 12 10.
Isn't VET really expensive?
Haha - yeah my English is really bad :P
$225 - fair I'd say.

The 75 min periods started at my school when I was in year 7, so I never knew any different. But I like it. Because of it I now think that 50 minutes isn't enough to do anything substantial in class.

I knew someone at macrob who did 2 VETs last year so they had 20 free periods, which meant the only had 3 days of school each week

Huh? Last year = 2010 = lexitu in Year 12.
I get 10 in Year 11.
I get 20 in Year 12.
In your face :)

:(
And if I ended up taking Uni Psych...even more.
Although MHS would never let me; didn't even let me take GMS 1/2 alongside MM 1/2 :'( :'(

So which VETs are you doing?

So which VETs are you doing?
VET: Allied Health.

Sorry, VET**, misread what you wrote. And what does Allied Health get you? Sounds okay.

No idea? Cert III in Allied Health.
I'm going in blind - but I'm assuming ~30% theory and ~70% practical.
It's great though - no exam. Assessment based on prac + attendance.
-
Ah okay, all the best with it.
-
Ah okay, all the best with it.
I'll give you more concrete detail after Term 1!
LOL atar are you doing spesh? as if you tried to do further
Hah. I think this thread should be remained to ATAR's Subject Choices ;)
Yeah I tried dropping GMA for GMS...didn't work -.-
Going to stick with GMA I guess... :-\

Remember, only 60%-75% of people got less than 50% in our tech-free end-of-year exam...

:O
Yep, GMA Unit 2!
-
1) should have 4 or 5
2) 43 minutes (7 periods)
3) Leave early every Wednesday

5) 6 periods of each subject/week
hopefully they get more flexible with our spares though
WE HAVE A BREADTOP AND SUSHI PLACE ACROSS THE ROAD NOW MANN T-T

that's just silly.
The 75 min periods started at my school when I was in year 7, so I never knew any different. But I like it. Because of it I now think that 50 minutes isn't enough to do anything substantial in class.
i agree, at my schol we have 4 80 mins period a day, split into one in the morning, then half of one, recess, the rest of the half, a full period, lunch then one more.
I think i get more work done and i can actually get stuck into it without having to stop helps especially with maths, but atm i have MME and GMA right after each other so that sucks. We have 3 classes per week per subject so 6 in a fornightly cycle. i have 2 spares in yr 11 a week and yr 12 i should get 6-8 80 minute spares a week :)

So I'm guessing all your classes are basically singles, no need for doubles or anything like that?
-
@ghost
Yeh all singles no double, unless your doing 2 maths and you the timetabelling that you fall into has them back to back you kinda have a double maths but it's different maths:p
I lile that system better, I reckon homework is slightly less due to les subjects in the day which is a positive

Yeah, at first I thought that 80 minutes was far too long for one subject, but when you think about it's more like a super effective single!
-
hopefully they get more flexible with our spares though
WE HAVE A BREADTOP AND SUSHI PLACE ACROSS THE ROAD NOW MANN T-T
I love sushi! THATS AWESOME!!! (and we have so many double frees!)

No joke, this is pretty much exactly the same as my school :o
-
It turns out that my period 7 means class after school
-
1) we 9-10 spares...dnt remember which one though:P
2) our periods go for 75minutes (4 periods)
3) we MUST stay at school...thats right...840-330 EVERYDAY =="
4) aboustely not very flexible. we have set classes that we get assigned to, must remain within that class and no leaving school grounds. but in terms of what we do, obviously it's for study...if we choose to
5) around 6 periods per subject..
NOTE. this is based on a fortnight period!

I've got quite a few. Not looking forward to studying in the library, though. It's always noisy ;A;
my timetable, though, is preeeeetty awesome.

Year 11:
1) I have two spares a week.
2) Each period is 75 minutes long.
3) Year 11s are only allowed to leave school if they have a spare in 4th (last) period.
4) We're not allowed to leave as for as I know, so just chill around the school.
5) I think I have around 3 or 4 per subject, per week with two "late classes" after normal school time. (22 periods a week (inc. late classes) - 2 spares = 20 periods, 3~4 for each of my 6 subjects... haven't counted for each subject, but I think that's how it is.)
-
Year 11:
2) Each period is 75 minutes long.
That's huge!
-
75-minute periods are actually pretty productive. You get a lot of work done and there's no 'rush' to get things done... as was the case when we had 50-minute classes. But when you have a subject twice in a day (separated by either recess or lunchtime) then that's when it becomes too much.. 150 minutes of one whole subject isn't the way to go. :P
-
I think I would have died if I had 150 minutes of yr9 geo...
-
no spares, 7 periods weekly for each subject, 50 min periods
-
1) how many spares/frees you have -> 5, soon to be 0 or 1 because im thinking of picking up IT-Software Dev via DECV
2) how long your classes are -> 45 mins
3) do you get to leave school early or come in later -> Leave early (2:30) on thursday, the others are during period 3/4 -_-
4) the flexibility of what you can do in your frees/spares -> Anything :D
5) how many classes of a certain subject you have per a week -> 5 (2 doubles 1 singles)
-
1) 5 spare per week
2) 72mins, 4 per day
3) yes only if it's your last period with a class for the day
4) stay in 'study centre' if it's not your last period for the day, have to get your name marked off as well
5) 3 periods per subject
-
Year 11:
2) Each period is 75 minutes long.
That's huge!
Yeah, most school seem to have 40~45 minutes periods but I actually quite like 75 minutes! In junior school we had like 10 periods of 30 minutes each, then I moved schools for high school. It was a big change at first but especially in maths classes we seem to get a lot done :) We don't have double periods though, I think that could get a bit much!
Last year during assembly time on some days we had an extra long classes in the afternoon (30 mins assembly time + 75 minute period) but I usually had IT on those days which was pretty bludge anyway :p
-
1] 5 free periods per week
2] 50 mins per class
3] nope :(
4] mostly study! (but can get away with anything if teachers arent around loool)
5] 5 classes for each subject per week (6 periods in an entire school day)
-
1) how many spares/frees you have
at least 2 frees everyday (6 sessions in a day) and we get the whole of wednesday off :P
2) how long your classes are
each session is 48 mins long
3) do you get to leave school early or come in later
normally, I just stay, but it's getting boring since on mondays, I have session 1 off, then class in session 2 and from there 10:23-2:30pm, I do whatever I want and come back for class at 1:30.
4) the flexibility of what you can do in your frees/spares
Go over to Melb , city, state, eat?
5) how many classes of a certain subject you have per a week
For each subject we have 4 sessions per week.
-
1) 5 private study, 5 correspondence
2) Approximately 50 minutes
3) Nope.
4) There are two places we can go to study. We cannot leave the school.
5) We have 5 - two doubles and a single.
