Out of curiosity ;) - Does Scotch College or other private schools offer Chess Scholarships and for how much?

No offence, but any school that has chess scholarships is probably void of much fun...

I know of American unis (colleges) that offer them though

rather play a sport like soccer or something.. honestly chess is pointless
+1, I prefer working with others and making some noise, not sitting in a room for 30+ minutes concentrating on a 8x8 board

(lol, don't mind 15x15 scrabble boards though, but still prefer real sports)

Chess is fun though, the thrill when you outsmart someone.

On the topic of things, my friend is an IM, and he goes to my school. Sooo...if he was offered a scholarship, I'm sure he wouldve went ages ago ? :)

I don't think Bobby Chen is an IM right? I was referring to James Morrisey.

I thought Bobby Chen was IM (he won a tournament in Egypt?)
Remind me, does James Morrisey go to Balwyn, VCA, or other?

Nah, he goes to university high, and plays exceptionally well ;x,

Btw, don't compare quote me on anything with chess haha. I"m no where near the calibre of james or boby.

Scotch offers indirect scholarships for Chess. They had a full team on scholarships about two years ago. They are for extra-curricular involvement though, not specifically for chess.

James and Bobby aren't on any scholarships as far as I know, but alot of American and Russian tertiary institutions offer BIG scholarships for it :P

Monash University has a Chess Bursary; under the Monash University Sports Scholarship. The downside is that the person that accepts it has to start a chess club, and an interversity competition.

P.S Bazza, who is the new Captain of Chess at MHS? I'm claiming it's going back to gimptown now that I'm gone! :P

it's not quite a "chess" scholarship or even extra curricular scholarship, it just an plain academic scholarship, but you'll find that msot of the time the people that get academic scholarship also engage in extra curricular activities

scotch gets nearly all the top chess players so i think their scholarships have something to do with their chess achievements

haha, trust me, scotch had many more priorities than chess, any connection between chess and scolarships is coiencidental

There was a stage where every single one of their players in the A-team were on scholarship, and quite frankly, they probably weren't at the top of the Academic rankings (except Derek).

But yeah this could perhaps be my conspiracy on the basis of our school getting our ass smacked by Scotch 9/10 times in chess. Nonetheless, I think their ability to play chess would be a fair factor in them receiving their scholarships.
