is there anyway of working out how many words a 6 minute speech should be?
including pauses
and by the way - talking at an average pace?

You can perform a speech of roughly 600 words and time yourself. It'll be different for all speakers but shouldn't vary greatly.

I talked at a normal speed and used many pauses (especially after rhetorical questions), it was 500 words cause I included some audience interaction as well --- 2 previously set-up questions for 2 friends in my class -
so 1 min for questions, 10 seconds to wait for their raising hands, 40 seconds for their answers, and 20 seconds for my feedback "yeah, spot on~ wow blah blah etc"~....and yada~~ there ya go two mins bludged~~
got A+ cos no one else did their oral the same way and the two teachers found it refreshing, maybe the constume also added some bonus mark, and i didn't use cue cards... took me a whole weekend to prepare for this oral though, quite many hours of preparation

i spoke at a normal pace with lots of pauses and had a 1000 word speech go for 7 and half minutes
