I also have a pretty, European host. His name is Jonathan Mackojc and he plans to study law. My "meeting place" is 10am Tuesday 22 February and t shirt colour is royal blue. Does that mean I have to wear royal blue, or just look out for it?

Just look out for it. All the Arts hosts wear royal blue.

Haha, I didn't have anything like that in mind.

She's probably a good 4 years older than me anyway.

Can anyone who has been through the orientation program before recommend any events/sessions throughout the week we should really try to go to?

i.e. free beer anywhere? :P

The checkboxes on the inside cover of your booklet are a pretty good guide. Ask your host on the day, there's really not much in the sessions that's not self explanatory, just hang out on South Lawn for the week

Tuesday after the host group sessions will be Sherry Party, which should be in university square (unless it gets changed).

Friday from 12:30-2:30 is the MORE BEER bbq, which is in Old Met(alurgy), building 166. There's a courtyard with a barbie in the middle of the building - it's awesome. Definitely come along to that. Most club barbeques will have long lines and a limited supply of alcohol, so you'll generally only get 3 or so beers.More Beer, on the other hand, (unofficially) encourages you to go nuts, so you can drink as many as you want and when it's all done we go get more slabs. ;) Absolutely worth the $10 or whatever it is to join.

By the way, become a union member at the start of O-Week. It will save you $30+ in club membership fees on top of all the savings throughout the year.

Which ones specifically? The tour starts at 10 and finishes whenever your group decides to stop. It'll probably go until at least 12 or so, probably a bit longer.

- Showing you around the uni and pointing out places you'll need to know (student centres, libraries, pubs, lawns, etc).
- Getting a small group of people on a first name basis and hopefully getting them to make a friend or two who's in the same position as them.
- Giving you an older student for a couple of hours to ask any questions about uni life and get real answers back, rather than the stuff you get from student centre staff who don't deal with social type stuff and have to be careful what they say when it comes to official communication.

I combined two of the recommended ones in the handbook, so I'll give my group a bag(s) of lollies and after they take them they have to tell the group a fact for every one they took. Might make them embarrassing facts for the lols

Doesn't really matter. There's a time you can meet at South Lawn if you don't have a host assigned. All of the hosts have to go through there at some point and pick up any extra students. :P

I'm not allowed in to the thing, probably because I'm meant to be a second yr student or something but it just keeps telling me my id is invalid no matter how many times I check my account, change my password or which browser I try.

Shit hosts are the boring academic ones who don't participate in any social stuff. We aren't allowed to give course advice, study tips don't transfer well from person to person (you'll figure out your routine in the first week or so anyway) and anything academic you want to know is accessible on the website. Hosts are there to tell you all the stuff you can't find out from official communication: who runs which social events, where the best pubs/cafes are, which subjects are tricky/easy/complete jokes, where good study/computing areas are, when and where barbeques are on, where to go if you need to find out x, etc.

3:30 is well timed for Friday, since More Beer is from 12:30 to 2:30. Just don't drive. ;)

That's another thing. Nobody drive to O-Week at all. There will be grog all over the place. Only mooks drive to Melbourne uni, anyway.

I live in Greenvale (not that you'd know where that is).
It's not THAT far away, but I'd rather drive. It's about an hour by public transport.

Oh ouch. Catching the train at Roxy or wherever would be a bit of a bitch anyway. Either move out, find somebody who will let you crash at theirs when there's a late night and/or drinking event, or don't enjoy uni. :P

There's so many social events at uni involving drinking, so I'd really look at moving out since you'll get really sick of not being able to really quickly. :P

I read about the pub crawls and parties, but how do we know where to go and when? And are arts/science/etc students separated?
I'm afraid I'll miss all sorts of things during the week o-o

That's the pub crawl. Generally the pub crawl is staggered by faculty, so commerce might be a couple of pubs behind science and arts might be a couple of pubs behind them. Pretty sure it will happen the same way.

Sherry party will probably be at 2pm on Tuesday in University Square. Otherwise call somebody who will know.

The SSS barbeque will be just before the pub crawl as said on the facebook page.

The More Beer barbeque will be on Friday from 12:30-2:30 in Old Metalurgy (you have to go through the building or around the back - it's in a courtyard in the middle).

More parties happen later; there isn't that much in O Week.

Ehhh...Broady isn't too bad. Cleaned up its act a bit recently. Jacana, on the other hand, is broady but 100m down the road, near deserted and completely unmanned.

Im not turning 18 till december :|
Are they strict on IDs? :P

If you're on a pub crawl, they won't ask. If they do ask, get somebody else to buy for you.

Sherry party requires no ID except to buy your sherry originally. Again, get somebody else to do it.

Societies hardly give a shit. If you're under 18 and we're checking IDs (to cover our arses), just don't get your ID checked and ask a mate to grab beers for you.

Sure it is.

In the horrifically boring host training, one of the situations I had to roleplay was "what happens if a member of your group only cares about going to the pub" and my response was "take the group there and leave him there".

They then went on about how alcohol is bad on Tuesday :S

I don't care what they say. I'm dual wielding stubbies from am to pm.

And sherry party is on Tuesday, which definitely involves alcohol.

I hope all of my students want to go to the pub. That would make my job so much better.

I'm kind of wearing a fake flannie atm. I hate my clicheness. Anyway, I'm annoyed because my friends all wanna go eng pub crawl but I wanna go arts! I think I can convince a few of my arts friends that arts is totally cooler.

Thank you! Was there a large line when you went?

Fairly large, but the system crashed so everyone left. We moved near the front and waited about 30 mins until they fixed it and got in 10 mins after.

Okedoke, thanks for that. Students from all undergraduate degrees could get their cards from the Asia Centre, right? Arts, Science etc.
Haha sorry about all the questions!

Introducing themselves:
"My name mumble mumble mumble. I am umm mumble mumble mumble".
Speak people! It won't kill you!

My group was pretty sociable.. it was kinda weird, I was expecting all silent/serious types. when we were passing other biomed groups they were dead silent though. must just be the luck of the draw.

You say this like you're surprised I was right! Without stereotyping (okay so definitely stereotyping), half the kids in biomed are like that. My group was probably a 50:50 split.

See you at the Welcome lunch at 12

BHAHAHA! YOU WERE THERE RUSS?! Were you the one stamping the green stamps at the front? That's who I thought you were :P

Every time I see a senior male student who I know is biomed I think "could that be THE russ?" haha.

Next time say hey, if I'm not with a group or something haha.

Apparently all the info sessions are essentially repeated in your lectures on week-1.

Or, as my college leaders put it, a complete fucking waste of time.
