Has anyone here ever tried the taekwondo at melb uni, or have heard anything about it?
If so care to share your experiences?
According to the Melb uni website they are ranked number one out of all the universities in Australia, i guess thats gotta count for something.
Anyone planning on trying it out?

ITF or WTF?

ITF or WTF?
WTF all the way (=
but it appears they have WTF and this other style called Rhee.. not exactly sure what that is, i think its some older style
-
I used to do ITF cause im totally a korean communist and all.
Rhee looks more like an Australia/New Zealand kind of thing
Well if you do join tell me how their club is incase i do transfer (which i probably will)
-
Hmmmm I'll try it out?

Hmm ive never done ITF )= do they even have full contact sparring?
I will most likely join up and try it, i really only want to do sparring, not the patterns etc...

Yea you can be a guinea pig for Kingpomba and I
-
We didnt have full contact sparring but our guy was 8th dan bloody scarey for an old guy.
Sparring was actually a bit akward non contact but i quit ages agoooo
Yeah i'm not much for sparring either except competitions haha even though i did it ages ago still got the trophies and stuff they gave out. They were pretty awesome fun.
Maybe you should try one of the other martial arts they offer at melbourne?
Don't know what they have

I think you misread what i said,
I only want to do sparring and not any of the traditional stuff like patterns, one/two/three step sparring, even self defence and kicking on the spot etc.

looks interesting
i might join!

Oh ok, thats why you should do WTF (=. But even then it really depends on the club and instructors you have (which is why i want to know what this club is like, but i guess ill have to give it a shot to find out).
I used to train under instructors who focused alot on competing and sparring, so basically we got to do heaps of sparring and practice sparring style kicks and movements etc.

Does UoM have BJJ or Wrestling?
Never really liked TKD, not effective enough IRL :\
-
Oh snap... better not mess with you then huh  lol
I hate patterns too though you need em to advance to the next belt?
Fine... I'll be the guinea pig :P but depends on the time it's on
-
No martial art is that useful IRL. Might as well do one you enjoy.

Yea you do need to do patterns to advance,
Although i dont really plan on doing any more gradings to be honest.
Ill probably try taekwondo 2nd or third week once i get used to my timetable etc.

Yea not so sure about that ( taekwondo definitely isn't effective, but some others can be i suppose), but i agree with doing it for enjoyment

I'm do Muay Thai right now, it's actually pretty useful....trust me ;)
Just wanted some grappling stuff to go with it.
-
Yeah but a lot of this is just practice in the gym and stuff, if you haven't been in an actual real fight where you were seriously in danger in awhile, in a real fight you just might tense up no matter how awesome the techniques you know are.
That said krav maga (israeli army stuff) and wing chung are probably two of the more effective martial arts. I don't even really think they're "martial arts" they don't have a long history or a lot of culture and rigidity to them. I think they like to call them systems and other words like that.
They're so effective though because they use a lot of cheap shots but you gotta do what you gotta do

Until some cvnt pulls a knife on you, lol. You'll deal more damage to somebody you're trying to get the fark away from than somebody who wants to keep you in one spot to 'fight' you will deal to you, anyway; no such thing as a spar if somebody wants to gut you.
It'd be useful if they're much stronger than you and you needed an edge in a fight, but that would generally require you staying to fight them. If they want to kick your arse, you have no reason to stay and you lose the advantage by doing so. If you want to kick their arse, they have no reason to stay, so they have the advantage.
If you legitimately want to hurt somebody, you either have to take them out straight away or make sure they can't turn the tables with weapons (either ones they already have on them or makeshift ones) or by calling in friends. Going in for a grapple or something is insanely risky when they could reach behind their back and prison yard rush you before you even realise what's going on, leaving you on the ground trying to hold your guts in.

Doesn't matter what the situation is, martial arts > no martial arts. If they didn't make a difference I doubt armies would bother with teaching their soldiers Krav Maga etc. You'd have a hard time stabbing one of those guys, some of the guys where I go are near impossible to stab with a rubber knife (for training purposes) unless you train in the same discipline.
Clinching someone up and kneeing the hell out of their face doesn't take long anyway. Besides, I don't think a single person would get into a bar fight with an unarmed Bas Rutten even if they had a knife.
-
Good luck.
-
Of course weapon will always trump no weapon, even just for the fear factor. (Of course one hit with a weapon and you're pretty screwed)
The very first thing we learnt and i think all martial artists should learn is "Don't cause trouble" "Don't go looking for trouble" "Don't beat someone up with what i've showed you" "Its better to never use martial arts at all, if you can get out of fighting you should".
All good things.
Also gotta remember those guys are trained soldiers who have faced real knives theyre used to it, martial arts can be useless sometimes if you take you're average middle class joe who hasn't been in a serious fight in ages and just throw him in.
I wouldn't do it for self defense, a lot of these systems are very old (like karate/judo) and were designed to defend against people who would only use hand to hand combat, the other stuff was added in later.
I'd do a martial art more for fun than self defense really.

Ignoring the above argument :
I suppose WTF is the normal one, that is the one you see in the olympics. Basically WTF and ITF have different styles and ITF doesnt have full contact sparring (i think).
WTF - world taekwondo federation
ITF - international taekwondo federation
-
It's also political.
ITF has links to north korea while WTF has links to south korea.
I think ITF is more authentic though because the father of modern taekwondo chong hong hi was the head of the ITF school.
Little summary of thathere.
We had sparring and it was non contact but thats maybe because we were juniors, i mean people still wore amour.
Here's a video of competitions, i didn't go to RMIT to do it but the same guy that taught me also teaches the rmit club.
(Getting a little off topic here haha maybe we need like a martial arts thread or something)

Well that video was pretty awesome, except some of the punching looks intresting :p.
Thats pretty hardcore because in WTF you have headgaurds and bodygaurds
-
At my old club we used to have to wear head-guards, maybe these guys just didnt have them or something haha or just wanted to be hardcore.
