Title: Law Post-Grad vs. Bachelor of Art/Laws
Post by: ProtonStar on February 16, 2011, 05:26:02 pm
Hey everyone. I'm intending to study Law at uni, and I'm curious to know what would be the more effective pathway: taking a Bachelor of Art/Laws at Monash (ATAR: 98.2) or Deakin (ATAR: ~93) or doing a Bachelor of Arts in Melbourne (ATAR: 85 I think) then doing a JD post-grad (or a similar post-grad law course). What degree is more versatile? More importantly, what degree will most likely get me a good job? :P

JD is the same as LLB, I don't think having one gives you any substantial advantage job-wise, nor is one more "versatile" than the other. JD is merely somewhat more concentrated than the LLB - you finish it in less years than you would an LLB, I think.

If you have the ENTER for law, and you know that you want to do it, then take the arts/law option.
1) Monash is just as good as UoM for law.
2) You won't have to risk sucking at the LSAT and ending up with just an arts degree and no law degree.

Ahhh yes... the fact I'd have to do the LSAT really worried me :O
Well I shall aim high, and endeavour to do Law/Arts at Monash!
Thanks for your advice :)

The J.D. is recognised as professional in America; the LLB is recognised as professional in the Commonwealth.

Are there any other postgrad Law degrees at Melbourne that an Arts student can go into besides the JD?

I heard JD is exclusively for people who wanna practise law.

What? There's no separate law degrees for people who want to practise law and who don't. You can just choose not to do the quasi-compulsory subjects which you need to do to get admitted to practice.

A lot of 'big' CEOs have an MBA. So... read that as you will.
