I always find it funny when i hear arts students doing a song and dance about their "crushing" university HECS debt of about $12,000. There are posters all over monash about demolishing HECS.
I'll walk away with a $43,000 - $51,000 debt. The advantage i suppose for us is that we earn $55,000 as interns, and can start paying that amount back quickly.
Could be far, far worse. A degree at an US university is astronomical, and you have to borrow that money. HECS may be inconsistent, but its better than paying full fee
-
I guess arts students do the "song and dance" because they have much lower employment prospects and therefore it's harder for them to repay the debt?
Whereas for you BA22, for example, you're pretty much guaranteed a job after uni
-
True, but that's their choice.
It's not as though they're not aware of the reality of their job prospects before they undertake their study
Besides, not all med students are guaranteed a job. Internships are no longer guaranteed in QLD
-
That's true. It was our (bad?) choice to become poor arts students :P
With this national shortage of doctors though, I doubt you'll find it hard to find employment when you graduate lol
-
haha, ninwa, with a LLB attached to that arts degree, you're not going to have as much trouble finding a job as someone with straight arts, plus you've taken a language. That takes you to 3 or 4 you know now?
Ninwa = highly employable
-
yay :D employable = money = i like money :D
-
lol well another reason arts students tend to make a song n dance is because they are more likely to have a political streak than say a science student
-
But only those with law degrees tend to find themselves in senior levels of politics?
HECS is a great system, we just need to stop the leak of defaulters among other things. In fact, I would propose that the HECS system be utilised in the post-VSU world, where students can pay for their student union fees using it, by ticking a box. I'm of the belief that the disincentive of 'I seriously can't be fucked going up to the office, let alone get the cash in hand' is a very strong one. Just look at online shopping :P
-
Don't bring SU into this, i seriously CBF
That should seriously be our student union slogan
