Title: Staff Hiring.
Post by: enwiabe on November 08, 2007, 11:24:19 pm
I'm letting you all know now, by the time February 2008 rolls around, I would like to have a full complement of staff. I believe that one of the main draws of FSN will be having a friendly and helpful face for each and every subject under the VCE sun.

What does this mean?
Moderators for most, if not all subjects. These moderators will be selected on the following criteria*:
1. A willingness to help out in your special subject.
2. Attaining an appropriate score to give advice and help answer questions (for this criterion, 40+ would be the target although maybe a little lower for harder subjects such as languages)
3. Being a generally nice and accessible person.
4. Activity.
5. Literacy. You must be able to make complete sense in your post. Do not use "u" or "ur" in place of the one second it would take to type out "you", "your" and "you're". Spelling isn't so important if it's a big/foreign word - we're only human. But if you show on the forum that you cannot communicate expressively and clearly, you will NOT be hired.

*Please note that not all criteria must necessarily be met for selection, but if you have all 4 down, you're almost a shoe-in.

What will be expected of Moderators?
- About 20 minutes, minimum, per day of activity. It's not asking too much. I know a lot of the people I hire will be in university and this minimum will also be waived during their own exam periods, but if you do wield power on my forum I would like you to be active with it.
- Answer a few questions. Answering every question that every little person puts forth is a little much to ask and we have a great many normal members who are more than helpful. But for the big questions or ones that are of importance, it would be nice for the community to know that there's someone out there watching their backs. That is what I am striving for with FSN - a community environment where we're all helping each other. Yes, call me a radical socialist commie lunatic. I don't care!
- Stickying announcements, highlighting online resources for people. etc. Follow AppleXY's example. There's a reason why he's the Business moderator. He's dedicated! He stickies useful links, he cleans up his forums, and is always willing to help where he can! It's not required that you go out and search for this stuff, but it all helps and would be greatly appreciated.

What you get in return
- The immense satisfaction of knowing that you wield the banhammer
- Community respect
- At SOME point, POSSIBLY (and no promises here) a rewards system that I have yet to devise. But there are plans for it.

Also...
- Please don't ask for moderator. It will only hurt your chances.

I think you forgot to propose the minimalist intervention policy.

Granted, organisation is great, but some interventions are not necessary.

I think brendan would do a decent job of Legal Studies, except that he hasn't taken the VCE subject, but he is great with providing resources for economics and law, haha.

Lol I was actually going to mention you Brendan but then didn't know whether you had done legal studies (even though you're doing law). I don't know if that disadvantages you with moderating the subject because it is so rigorously structured around the study design.

But yeh trust me. I have a lot of respect for you and also think you would do a great job on legal mod :D

Lolz
Ooh, ooh, then can you convince the site owners to convert this forum to SMF? Because SMF is awesome (and I'm on the SMF team) :D

Because phpBB sucks :P
Except for this smiley, it's the only good feature:

LOL, I'm really a vBulletin man - easy to install, administer (I adminster a private vBulletin forum) and lots of users are familiar with it. You'd have to sell SMF to me :P

I don't wanna lose all the forum info, though. I'm considering upgrading to phpBB3. It's so good! It doesn't even LOOK like phpBB anymore. Zomg I had an orgasm when a friend showed me it. So, yeah, November 26th is upgrade day and we'll see how we like it. If it gets the nod, I'll upload many hacks and mods to improve the functionality of the forum.

But it costs like heaps

It is not good.
And SMF has a database converter. If you're willing to give me a database backup, I'll get a beta SMF-powered forum up, and all data will remain intact (even groups and stuff).
And also, if you use SMF, I can write custom mods for you. I'm on the customisation team and know its code inside out :D

SMF has a package manager - You don't need to install mods manually.
Example of its use (my SMFShop mod's installation instructions): http://www.dansoftaustralia.net/smfshop_wiki/Installation :D

To add to my last post (grrr, why no editing in this board? O.o):
Quote
You'd have to sell SMF to me

Take a look through the feature list and you'll see many unique features: http://www.simplemachines.org/about/features.php :)
My site (www.daniel15.com) is powered by SMF's SSI features. SMF's SSI features are quite powerful, and allow you to embed forum information in a website (take a look at http://www.simplemachines.org/community/ssi_examples.php for example).

With SMF, you could have a user login system on the FreeStudyNotes site, and have it use SMF logins. Take a look at http://www.dynamic-sig.com/ - Basically the whole site is powered by SMF. :D

I'm the type of person who always edits their posts to add extra stuff... I can't live without an "Edit" feature enabled in a board :P

SMF does look like a classy option. I'm over phpBB these days, I used to think it was the 'bee's knees' (in the words of Jack Black) but there are so many good packages like SMF that would be very nice.

T-Up from me Daniel (dota nerds would get that).

I'll ask the SMF team if they'd let me use SMF 2.0 Beta for this site. SMF 2.0 is currently a closed beta that only charter members and SMF team members can use, but since I'm a team member, they may let us use it on this site :D

If you like phpBB you'll go crazy when you see SMF 2.0 :D
 - WYSIWYG (rich-text) editor for posts which you can use instead of manually entering BBCodes
 - Moderation center - Monitor users and stuff
 - User warning system
 - Custom profile fields (so, we could have a "Year 12 Subjects" field that would appear on user's profiles)
 - And other cool stuff, plus all of the cool stuff in SMF 1.1 :D
:D

See http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=163438.0 and http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=190812.0 for more :)

Better polish that button... enwiabe.

No offense, but phpBB is t3h suXX0r.

SMF would be interesting. I support that, if it goes through.

Why was this site called Free Study Notes? People at my school think it's cheap-sounding. Especially the BoS spam that someone's been doing.

Because when you acronym it, FSN is close to MSN and is catchy. :) And also, when I parked this domain 11 months ago, it sounded good. I might change it to something less tacky after VCE. Depending on how much I budget for the site.

What about something like vcechat.com or vceforum.com or something? Generic name = easy to remember :)
Looks like vceforum.com was registered last year but has since expired... I was going to register it but didn't have enough money in my PayPal account :P

And I agree, phpBB sucks. Nearly every other forum system is better than it :P

And yeah, the slowness in their ENTER score estimator was the whole reason I wrote my own, faster one :D

Grrrr... I wanted to register vceforum.com just to have it, but it expired 13th September 2007 and has been in the "redemption period" since 26th October 2007. This "redemption period" lasts for 30 days (usually), so the domain will be available to register again on 26th November. Someone should register this domain when it's available again, it's quite a good domain :)

If one person asks and gets picked everyone else will probably think the same goes for them, and then bam, you get every tom, dick and jane who wants moderator asking you for moderator. If you send out the message early and forcefully like I am now, there won't be any issues like this in the future. :)

I don't think everybody would want to be moderator, but it guess it would be hard to manage with requests. I agree that it's better to have a system where you look out for people who have done a good job, and then PM them an invitation, and if they accept, thumbs up.

I was just wondering, that's all. :)

But I wouldn't disqualify her. Make your point in bold, and put it near the beginning. She obviously was referred to the thread in a way where she didn't read your main post, she just say the topic, and realised that was what Ahmad was talking about, so she posted.

Be encouraging, but just remain firm that you will not accept requests, and you are only looking for people from their merits.

Ha ha, Applexy rules! And I'm really glad you made Ahmad maths/physics/chem mod, he's such a genius yet he doesn't let it go 2 his head 8)

Love your choices so far. *thumbs up* Although I too would like to nominate Goosefraba or Costargh for legal. Perhaps some "dual moderality" alongside the wonderful Brendan? (yes, fear the wrath of my invented words)

I'm curious enwiabe, how many mods are you after? I spose you'll need more as the site grows. I gather you may also be reserving some of your decisions until after results come out. Perhaps you could post a list of the mods so far and their modding area? I think I only know a couple of them >.<

Wait... there's only 5 so far yeah? I can only think of 5 :?

coblin = maths/physics/chem
Ahmad = maths/physics/chem
brendan = economics/legal
AppleXY = business
munto (sp?) = biology

Ahmed and Coblin are both highly commendable moderators in maths/physics/chem. Without them a lot of unanswered maths problems will still be lurking in the air.

Apple XY is also a realy good choice. So are Brendan, munto and Daniel.

The beauty of this website is that it caters specifically for VCE students.

HOWEVER, we do need a pro English moderator for English next year(seeing that English is THE most imprtant subject).  For thsi I would recommend 'kido_1' who consistently gives numerous advice in English/ESL section of the forum.

Yes kido_1 would be a good English mod to have on this forum.

Well this is my first post.

My name is Joseph. I am 17 and I am doing Lit 3/4 and Media 3/4 this year. I am planning to do Further, methods, French and Latin next year.

I heard of this website from kido_1, ApppleXY, costargh and the crew who are posting on their signatures on BOS.

I actually really like this website and I think Dan has done an extraordinary job transferring the dejected VCE community on the slow and unreliable BOS, to a new lively forum that caters for VCE students.

Speaking of mods. I think all the mods are great. Though i would highly recommend kido_1 as the English moderator. This is because on BOS he helped me out with an essay once and I got 19/20 .

Cheers guys(I also like soccer and AFL-go the crows!)

Don't 4get smart; I admire the mathematical talents of the pplz on this site all the more after I totally blew the spec exams  Besides, wot would an FSN mod care wot a 10-post lurker like me has 2 say? :P In fact, I'd only accuse you of letting it get to your head if you pushed that ban button on me

Okay. Thanks. Nah, I wasn't trying to milk for compliments when I asked that (noone has accused me of this, but some people probably are thinking it).

It was because Fyrefly didn't mention my name and she specifically said Ahmad doesn't let it get to his head, so I thought I had crossed the line (which I admit I probably do sometimes... but in more personal conversations usually).

Hey,

I wish I'd noticed this thread a lot sooner. I would like to be considered to be an english moderator if possible.

I'm deferring next year and so would therefore be able to visit very regularly to assist members with text responses, language analysis etc. I've got heaps of sample text responses typed which I'd be happy to share around.

A majority of the texts I did this year remain on the text list for next year and I can offer comprehensive notes for 'Look Both Ways', 'Romulus My Father' and 'Home'. I've ranked very well in english this year, getting close to 100% for all SACs. Obviously my study score should assist to demonstrate my ability. I'm very passionate about english and would be more than happy to help out whenever I can.

History (Revs) and Psych are also my strengths and I'd be happy to moderate in either of those forums as well....especially Revs...absolutely love that subject.

I wish you'd read the first post of the thread sooner.
