Title: Heinemann Biology 2 Recommendations?
Post by: lango on February 26, 2011, 12:27:29 pm
Hi, im currently doing 3/4 biology and using NOB as the textbook. The way the textbook is structured I dislike it and so I'm looking for another book to use as an extra resource. I also do 3/4 Chemistry and I find that the structure of the Heinemann chemistry 2 book is good for me and has
nice descriptions and definitions of concepts. So I am wondering if the Biology Heinemann has the same layout as the Chemistry Heinemann? and whether anyone currently using or has previously used the Heinemann book if they found it to be a worthwhile resource? All opinons are welcome,
thanks.

Yep, Heinemann Biology 2 is well structured. I just wouldn't use it as a complete replacement to NOB, rather as a supplement/complement. As with most subjects, some textbooks cover things better than others (some might even leave out important things). Definitely a good resource.

I used Heinemann for Semester 1 and then changed to NOB for Semester 2.

I found NOB to be a much better resource.  It goes into much greater detail, covers the course far more comprehensively, especially when it comes to Gene Technology and Evolution in Unit 4.  At the end of the day, it is more reading, but certainly worth it.

I recommend reading the BioZone Book as a supplementary resource.  I didn't find many of the questions in it that useful, but it was a great read and doing the questions as well is certainly no harm.  :)

NOB is excellent but poorly organised.

That was pretty much my textbook for bio. I found NoB to have way too much information and way too much detail. I also found it to be an extremely boring read and didn't look at it much in Unit 4 at all (I didn't look at anything in Unit 3). Biozone ftw!

Yeah the heinemann biology is the same structure as the chemistry one. Don't know about the NOB but the heinemann biology book has a lot of little errors here and there. The content however is definitely more well organised compared to the NOB.
