Hi,
MY englsih tutor mentioned to me, for around the third time that monash does in fact look at the GAT when comparing students to one another, as like the UMAT it rewards natural talent.
Is this true? I hadn't ever heard of this, but seeing that she is an examiner and supposedly has 'connections'/friends (I wouldn't doubt this as she is well reknown and often gets authors of books to come to talk to her students) I didn't doubt her.
Just wanted to see what everyone else has to say.
Thanks.

Im not 100 percent sure but i think its only looked at for middle band... And even then i doubt it has much of an effect as the GAT is crap..... Also if i recall correctly when applying for courses through VTAC there is an option that asks you if you want the unis to view your results so that may mean its use in course selection is seldom
-
it wouldn't weigh as much as umat, interview or atar and probably has little influence
-
no not true. for med they only assess umat, interview and atar. ok cool..
-
I'm not sure for med, but I think there is a middle band of sorts in Medicine. If there are students who have equal ATARs, equally good interviews and UMAT, then maybe they will take into account the GAT.
When in the Middle Band, someone who chooses to share their GAT results will always get the spot over someone that does not, assuming all other factors are constant. So if you think you might struggle to get your first shot, give it your best shot for VCE, try hard on the GAT, and of course ensure your interview and UMAT are good :)

Thanks,
this is indeed quite cool.
Also heard that the GAT plays a role in english, initially i thought the GAT was only there so they could predict a score for a subject (if you were sick or missed an exam for some reason). Is this true?
For example, getting a 45 on GAT for english, and a 35 after SACs and exam, would they pull your score up a bit, seeing the big difference? Furthermore, disregarding the exam, if you were to average low/very high on SACs and your GAT indicated the opposite, would anything be done?

The GAT is a stupid exam.

Indeed.

Indeed.
What happens if you wrote outside the essay boundary. I think i did that for 1/4 of my essays?
@DrLecter Lol, i just realized how stupid my question was >;

your gat result speaks for itself

The GAT is a great exam, the attitude of the state to it is stupid.

yeah i heard that it plays a role in that too with ensuring your english score was fair, etc. etc.
but mostly its for use when one cannot sick their exam due to trauma, accident or whatnot - calculating a derived score.
but not for med!!! i assure you they don't use it..

True, but on average, I guess the GAT results aren't very reliable, hence why I personally believe that it is a stupid exam.

Just out of curiosity, if the GAT did in fact count for something when universities are deciding placements, would they take into consideration both your GATs over year 11 and 12, the one with the best marks or just that of year 12?

just year 12 since its the year you did those relevant subjects, the year 11 is good for practice though.

lol...the GAT told me I would get 35 for mathematics. It's a pretty legit exam. (Y)

It works on the same basis as study scores though, your ranking on the GAT for maths placed you such that you would get a SS of 35, or top 25% or w/e (I can't remember what a 35 is in terms of percentile).

I got 39 in the written part in year 11 and 48 in year 12. In year 11 I tried to write a structured, reasonable essay; in year 12, I wrote about Human Centipede instead.
Other highlights include beating Kyzoo in the maths/science part both years and beating appianway in every category in year 12 (when it was the other way around in year 11?). Enough said.
-
I got like 21 or something on written in year 11, I think they failed me for making jokes about George Clooney mating with thousands of males, much like the Queen Bee.
-
did you actually write about human centipede? lol
