Title: Medicine 2012
Post by: andy456 on April 11, 2011, 07:42:44 pm
I've been considering re-applying this year through VTAC for MBBS at Monash but before I do anything I would like to know if my ATAR is high enough to begin with. I know that if I finish this year my uni results will be considered but so will my ATAR so yeah.
Does anyone know if my score will cut it??
Also what kind of uni grades am I looking at to have a chance?

ATAR's high enough. I've got friends in with 95s and 96s. UMAT and interviews are the actual barrier. Is there anywhere that actually says your uni scores will count? They do in transfers but is the process any different for Med? Everything regarding Med tends to be a little different; the faculty basically isn't a part of the university.

I have a sneaking feeling that MBBS @ Monash doesn't accept non school leavers any more :(

You must be a year-12 leaver to apply for Monash MBBS. No, a 97.45 probably wouldn't be good enough unless you had an epic UMAT

Can you even do that in Monash Medicine? as far as I know you have be a year twelve student entering and and not a student who has undertaken a course and then transferring..unless it is a period of two years?

Oh really? I've got a few in my year level who have done other courses before. One left Dent in 1st year quickly before the census date. There was another who was 4th year or so in Pharm though and ended up in my year level. Perhaps it was a very recent change then.

Yeah I know a few guys in your year/year below who transferred in. Apparently it was for this year.

Yep, I just read the VTAC guide 2010

It says:

Quote
[]This course is only available to CY12 or applicants who have completed VCE or equivalent no more than two years previously and have not undertaken any tertiary studies since

But does that also refer to other current medicine students from other unis wanting to transfer?

I know someone who transferred from JCU to Monash this year. Doing 2nd year, didn't even have to start from first year again, so should be possible.
Their ATAR was in the high 99's though, and not so good of a UMAT apparently..

I know several people who did this too but it was only due to exceptional circumstances in each case (almost every one being due to an ill family member). Don't think it's normally allowed.

Fair enough, it was the same case for this person too. Although, there is another person i know of who did the exact same thing, but they had to repeat first year and had no "circumstance". I believe they'd be in your year level now shinny, so Monash might not do things that way anymore?

oh my bad I was reading something for the wrong course... well thats annoying

'Minimum entrance requirements for non-school-leavers
Places will not be offered to non-school applicants in the MBBS course. Non-school leaver applicants should consider investigating the Monash University graduate medical program at the Gippsland campus.'

97.45 is high enough, I've seen quite a few CSP with lower and Full Fee with much lower.

You can actually apply for a MD after your BA, except you will have to study for the GAMSAT in your own time.

Doesn't he need the prerequisite subjects?

At Melbourne, the prerequisites are required for the MD(in anatomy, physiology and biochemistry). The grad MBBS at both Monash and Deakin don't have prerequisites, though.
