Title: Detailed Study: Structures and Materials
Post by: Bozo on April 21, 2011, 02:03:38 pm
Has anyone started their detailed study yet, at school we are doing it before electronics and photonics.

We haven't started it yet, we spent the last few weeks of school on our EPI.

I imagine structures and materials will be what we'll be starting next week.

What were your EPI's like?

I did my EPI on structures and materials, all we did was measure the deflection of beams or cantilevers when you applied a force (We just put on weights).

It's fairly easy, just my teacher hasn't explained it to us properly, and we have to hand it in next thursday :)

What's everyone up to in Physics?

We're starting our detailed study first day back.

Can I just say that if you can choose your detailed study, do special relativity! You won't regret it :D

We did ours on motion, almost the entire class did projectile motion.

We're doing relativity :P

Haven't started S&M yet, probably in a couple of weeks

Is that off what most others do?

nope, most people do structures which to me is so damn boring, and if you're doing special relativity, you get 2/3 weeks off physics coz serps said you can self study at home :D

we finished S&M (chains excite me...), starting electronics nd photonics when we get back

We started our detailed study pretty much the first day back (Further Electronics) which lead on to Electronics and Photonics. On the last/second last week of term we started motion and will be doing that until whenever we finish. From then on, it's revision!

shouldnt further electronics be done after electronics and photonics? or is it a more basic course?

It's about the same, just different content. I thought it'd be more logical, you do need to use ohm's law etc in further.

I found it much simpler than Electronics and photonics - I think the only formula required was V = IR? And you just needed and understand of the different "stages" in a rectifier circuit. I've taken a look at the exam questions relating to the detailed study as well - all multiple choice; therefore you could say it's more basic.

What is the main point of the detailed study?

To satisfy the examiner's indecision.

Has anybody completed all the checkpoints to Structures and Materials?

To satisfy the examiner's indecision.

Would they gear the exam towards what detail study you choose?

Sorry if I don't quite understand what you mean, but there are two core area of studies (Motion & Electronics + Photonics) which everyone has to complete and then you are able to choose one of three detailed studies. I believe you do the one that your school chooses, as quite obviously you are being taught the theory and stuff on that topic. All the detailed study questions are multiple choice, and the difficulty for each would be similar.

That is all.

Yeah, i've done majority of the checkpoints, only a handfull of the torque questions i found confusing, but i figured em out eventually. All in all, structures and materials is minor theory, stress, strain, youngs modulus, torque clockwise=torque anti clockwise and interpretation of the graphs.

Also, whose got a zip file of physics exams, according to our current study design?

We finished up all of motion/forces and S&M before the holidays, had our SAC on S&M after the hols and now we are starting electricity.

I am rooted for electricity, I didn't do unit 1 physics.
