Title: priority when it comes to numbering HC??
Post by: nemolala on April 27, 2011, 09:59:49 pm
when naming hydrocarbons and it comes to halogens and alkyls, do they have priority for the numbering? (if that makes sense  ???)

and also when answering exam questions for what types of reactions occurred in this reaction pathway, if i answered it as halogenation instead of addition, is that considered wrong or should i just say both?

sorry for the heaps of questions, just need to fill in the gaps :)

thanks!

1) Yes side chains and functional groups take precedence.
2) Personally i would stay with addition, atho i do believe both are correct.

ok so what would come first if you were to get a question that had both a halogen and alkyl group?
